Earth and Life Science

1st Semester
Content: Exogenic Processes
Topic: METAMORPHISM
Date: July 16, 2019

Learning Competencies:
The learners should be able to:
1. Describe the changes in mineral components and texture of rocks due to changes in pressure and
temperature (metamorphism). S11/12ES -Ic-17
Grade Level: Grade 11
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
1. Define metamorphism.
2. Identify the factors that control the mineral composition of a metamorphic rock and the metamorphic
processes involve under the agents of metamorphism (temperature and pressure).
3.

1. Arranging of chairs
2. Checking of attendance

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

ELICIT:

Describe the rock cycle. Metamorphic rocks are similar to sedimentary

Where does the metamorphic rocks occur in the rock cycle rocks in the sense that they are both “recycled”
and how it is related to other types of rocks? rocks (derived from pre-existing rocks). Whereas
sedimentary processes (weathering, erosion, and
deposition) occur at surface or near surface
conditions, metamorphism (the process through
which pre-existing rocks are transformed into
metamorphic rocks) normally occur at subsurface
conditions (resulting from but not limited to deep
burial). Unlike igneous rocks, there is no melting
involved in metamorphism.

ENGAGE:

What do we mean when we say metamorphic rocks? How Answers may vary.
are metamorphic rocks formed?
EXPLORE:

EXPLAIN:

1. Define metamorphism.
• As a response to heat, pressure, and chemically active
fluids, minerals become unstable and change into another
mineral without necessarily changing the composition. For
example, coal, which is composed entirely of carbon, will
turn into a diamond (also composed of carbon) when
subjected to intense pressure.
• The mineral composition of the resulting metamorphic
rock is influenced by the following:
- Mineral composition of the original or parent rock
- Composition of the fluid that was present
- Amount of pressure and temperature during
metamorphism

2. Use Table 1 to summarize the metamorphic

processes involve under the agents of metamorphism
(temperature and pressure).

3. Foliated and Non-Foliated Metamorphic Rocks

 Non-foliated metamorphic rocks are formed when

heat is the main agent of metamorphism. Generally,
non-foliated rocks are composed of a mosaic of
roughly equidimensional and equigranular minerals.

 Foliated metamorphic rocks are formed when

pressure is the main agent of metamorphism.

ELABORATE:
Video Showing: I will show you a video about
metamorphism and after watching the video each group
will present/share to the class their insights, learnings, and
reflections from the video.

EVALUATE:
SHORT QUIZ : Answer the following in a ½ sheet of paper.
1. Define metamorphism.
2-5. Enumerate the 4 factors that control the mineral composition of a metamorphic rock.
Identify if the following is foliated or non-foliated.
6. Marble
7.Gneiss
8. Schist
9. Slate
10. Marble
True or False
11. In high pressure, the minerals in a metamorphic rock may recrystallize into more compact/stable forms.
12. The parent rock of marble is sandstone.
13. The parent rock of quartzite is limestone.
14. The common minerals found in schist are mica, chlorite, talc and quartz
15. Foliated metamorphic rocks are formed when heat is the main agent of metamorphism.
