PREFACE

Thank you we anchor the presence of Allah SWT, who for His mercy, we can
complete the preparation of traditional games. Writing Traditional games dictionary is
one of the tasks and requirements for completing assignments in lexicology.

In Writing this Dictionary of traditional games we feel there are still many
shortcomings in both technical writing and material, given our capabilities. For that
criticism and suggestions from all parties we really hope for the improvement of
making this traditional games Dictionary.

In writing this traditional games Dictionary we express our utmost gratitude to


the parties who helped in completing the task of compiling this traditional games
Dictionary. and thanks to mom meisuri as the supervisor of this course

TRADITIONAL GAMES
The type of game viewed from the location of the game is divided into: Indoor
games and Outdoor games
I. Indoor games
here are some games that are usually done indoor along with the tools /
materials used and how to play them.
1. Bekel

Bekel is one type of traditional game from Central Java, if in Yogyakarta it is


known as Gatheng. When free or when going home from school, children
usually play bekel together.

Bekel is usually played by girls aged 7-10 years. Usually the number of players 2
to 4 people. Bekel is played with agreed upon rules.

How to play
1. Determine who gets the first turn.
2. After determining whose turn starts first, the game starts by throwing the ball up and
spreading the seeds.
3. After the ball drops and bounces, the bekel seeds are released in a random position, then
taken one by one, two-two, three-three, and so on until they run out.
4. Bekel seeds that have been removed from the grip are turned into a position facing
upwards. Then, turn it again into a prone position or 'curl'.
5. The game will be declared ending / stopping or the term will die, if when taking the bekel
seeds of the player's hand regarding or touching other bekel seeds

The tools or material used rubber ball and bekel seeds]
 Rubber ball. This ball is made of rubber, about the size of a ping pong ball
or golf ball. Bekel balls are usually colorful with interesting motifs.
 Bekel seeds. Bekel seeds that are smaller than this bekel ball are made of
brass. Every time playing, 10 pieces of bekel seeds are needed. Bekel
seeds have 4 different sides.

2. Congklak
This game is one of the traditional Indonesian toys which is very much appreciated,
especially by many girls. For Adam, this game might not be very interesting.
Congklak is believed to have originated from an African or Arab country, but this
game is also quite identical to traditional Javanese games. In addition to Java, this
game is also known in other regions, Congklak spread to Asia through Arab traders.
In Indonesia the game is known by the name of congklak, in the Philippines, sungka.
In ancient times, the royal court played congklak by using luxurious carved congklak
boards, while among ordinary people, it was played by digging holes in the ground
and using seeds.

How to play :
1. This game is played by two players.
2. This game uses congklak board and congklak seeds.
3. There are 49 congklak seeds divided into 14 small holes, each hole containing 7 congklak
seeds.
4. Suit to take a turn to play.
5. The first player, distribute the congklak seeds in his area, choose one of the holes to
distribute the cangklak seeds to each small hole, and one large hole that belongs to you,
or save your seeds.
6. Distributing each round through the filling hole with 1 congklak seed
7. As soon as it is finished until the congklak seeds run out, if it is finished then turn to take
turns playing.

The tools or materials used congklak board

 The holes on the congklak board are 16 pieces. Each side of the dakon board
has 7 holes and 2 holes in each corner / board edge
 The Congklak game requires 98 sapodilla seeds. 7 holes were filled with 7
seeds for each hole. So, each player has 49 small seeds ready to run.
3. Yo-yo
The traditional yoyo game was first made by the Greeks in 500 BC. And yoyo
games increasingly became popular in 1920. In its development, Duncan
Palmer, a businessman producing toys in 1930. Since then yo-yo has become
increasingly popular. Duncan's first production was named Duncan O-BOY.
So since then this game has been global and proven to never bore

How to Play :

1. Hook the rope hook to the finger


2. Drop the yoyo discs downward following the rope
3. If you feel the rope has reached the bottom it can be pulled by lifting the finger that was
wrapped around the rope until it returns to the palm of the hand.
4. Impressed easy, but it is quite difficult if you are not familiar.

Yo-yo is an object made of wood shaped like a wheel splitting and pivoting on
the inside, to play the tool with the help of a rope that is held together on both ends of
the leather material that is attached to the shaft. Traditional forms of play are
entertainment and are played singly, and are usually performed by boys between the
ages of 7-15
4. Angklung
Angklung comes from the Sundanese angkleung-angkleungan, which is the
movement of the angklung player and forms the klung sound it produces.
Etymologically angklung comes from the word "number" which means tone
and "lung" which means broken. So, angklung refers to a broken or
incomplete tone.

How to play :
Angklung games are quite easy for everyone. Playing it in a way, one hand
holds the angklung frame, and the other hand shakes it to produce a sound or
sound. There are three basic techniques to shake angklung, namely:
1. Kurulung (vibrating), is the most commonly used technique, where one
hand holds the angklung frame, and the other hand wiggles the angklung
as long as the desired tone, until the bamboo tubes that are in collision
and produce a sound.
2. Cetok (sentak), is a technique in which the base tube is pulled quickly by
the finger to the palm of the right hand, so that the angklung will sound
once (stacato).

3. Tengkep, is a technique similar to a curler, but one of the tubes held does
not vibrate. In melodic angklung, this technique causes angklung to emit
pure tones (just one melody, not two as usual). Meanwhile in the major
angklung akompanimen, this technique is used to play a major chord (3
notes), because if it is not gripped it plays the dominant septim chord (4
notes).

Additional Information :

The form of angklung consists of two or more bamboo stems in various sizes
according to the needs of the high and low tones that are formed to resemble
a calung musical instrument.

5. ABC Lima Dasar
ABC Lima Dasar is one of the traditional games in Indonesia in the province
of Central Java. ABC Five Basic Game is a form of word play, which is
guessing the name of an object, animal or name of characters such as artists,
heroes and others. As agreed with the players at the beginning before the
game. This game is usually done to fill free time and also can also train
general knowledge of the players

How to play :
1. The ABC Five Basic game can begin with the gathering of players and
determine the game which is the name of what players will guess can be
objects, animals, fruit and characters.
2. After being determined by the player, for example mentioning the name of
the fruit, the players gather and collect hands, then together mention "ABC
Five Basis" and all players must show their finger according to the wishes of
each player.
3. One player counts the fingers indicated by the players by calling the alphabet;
A, B, C, D, E, etc. Until the last player's last finger, for example, falls on the
letter "J", the player competes as quickly as possible to name the fruit whose
first letter uses the letter J. And the player who cannot name the correct fruit
is punished by the player who can mention the name of the fruit correctly is
by putting his hand down and being touched by the player who wins.
4. Then the game continues by repeating the game which is putting the players'
hands again and recalculating, but starting from the last letter it is called "J";
K, L, M, N, etc. Until the last finger, and so on

Additional Information:

This game can be played by all people from children to adults. The number of
players in this game is free, more than one person. But usually not too much. The
appropriate age to play this game is between the ages of 7-15 years.

II. Outdoor Games


here are some games that are usually done outdoor along with the tools /
materials used and how to play them.

1. Kelereng/ Gundu
Gundu or Kelereng or Guli are shaped like balls in small sizes. Usually about 1
cm in diameter. Gundu is usually made of glass. There are clear ones, some are
white, some are colored, some are shiny, and there are large shades that are
about 3 cm in diameter or as big as baso. Lots of variety of games that can be
played with mounds.

How to play:
1. First, determine the number of marbles that will be at stake in his game, for example 3
marbles for each person.
2. Put all the marbles at stake into a circle that has been made.
3. Make a transverse line as a barrier with a distance of about 7 meters from the circle of
marbles.
4. After making a line, then by limiting the lines, each participant throws one marble
towards the circle containing the marbles at stake.
5. When the marbles go into a circle, and stop in it, the participants are considered to be
dead.
6. If the beating marbles hit the marbles inside the circle until the marble is thrown out of
the circle, the marbles thrown out belong to the thrower. But with the condition that the
bat marbles do not stop inside the circle.
7. Participants with marbles that are closest to the circle get the opportunity to aim first, and
vice versa, participants with the farthest marbles will take the turn aiming at the end.

Additional Information

This marbles game does not need to require a special tool. Games only require
empty fields as arenas of marbles and chalk or sticks to make game lines.
2. Lompat Tali
Lompat Tali or "playing rubber" was once popular among children in their 70s
and 80s. This rope jumping game is a favorite when "playing out" at school and
after taking an afternoon bath at home. Rope jumping games are played together
by 3 to 10 children.

How to play :

1. Players perform hompipah or faint to determine two players who become rope

In general,Lompat Tali or Jump rope games are played by girls and to play this
game requires a minimum of 4 kids. The tools or material used rubber bans

3. Layang-Layang

that it had been from the 17th century originating from Malay historical records,

How to play :
1. Requires open space to play this one game, such as the field and also there are
many winds to support kites.
2. Kites are usually made of paper or plastic, long thin bamboo and yarn.
3. After flying kites high, the game will be even more exciting if you clash with
other players.
4. Usually to complain you need thread / string strings (strings that have
sharpness).
5. There are those who play, some are chasing, usually if there is a kite that breaks
or loses a complaint, it will be pursued together and scramble to get the kite, and
this is where the real excitement

Additional information :
The materials used for this game (to make kites) are yarn, bamboo, paper, and
thread (glass), Kite games require an open and wide field so participants can
move freely.
The cultural values in the kite game are as follows:
1. Can improve socialization between communities.
2. Prioritizing togetherness rather than individuals, because kite play is more fun
and enjoyable when played together.
3. Giving extraordinary sensation when carried out at the time of the abundance or
swift of the wind and this forces us to love and use nature.
4. Engklek
The term "Engklek" comes from the Javanese language, in the Riau region called
Setatak, in the Jambi area it is called Tejek-tejekan, while in the Toba Batak area it
is known to Marsitekka. It is a traditional children's game that is very popular
and takes place in the yard, field, or other places that are free and have a fairly
flat surface so that the boxes that have been drawn can be passed more easily.
Engklek is a traditional game of jumping on a flat plane drawn on the ground by
drawing squares, then jumping with one leg from one box to the next.

How to play:
1. Draw a patterned grid with sequential number of rows 1 or 3. Usually, players
use stone or chalk for make up the pictures of these boxes.
2. Players throw flat stones or broken tiles on the game box. The box where this flat
stone falls is a reference
3. The first player is determined by means of hom pim pa or with rock scissors
4. The first game, throwing a flat stone (run) into the initial box, if the runway falls
in another box or outside the box then the player fails and is replaced with
another player. But if successful, the player jumps on one leg, then gradually to
the end. The jump continues until the end without stepping on the box that is in
the player's pace.
5. When the player jumps on the line or drives the opponent, then the player fails

Additional Information:
The crank game is very good for growing children. Children become healthy
because playing must always be active. Can also hone foresight when throwing
stones and learn to maintain balance when jumping. Socializing with friends
while playing can also foster a sense of togetherness and joy. Engklek usually
uses stone or chalk to draw pictures of these boxes

6. Peta Umpet
Petak Umpet is a very famous traditional game. Every child in Indonesia must
know and have played this game. This hide and seek game is played by more
than 3 people, starting with hompimpa to determine who will be 'cat' (search for
friends who are hiding). The cat will then close his eyes while leaning in front of
a wall, tree, or anywhere so he can't see his friend hiding

How to play :
1. This game is played by 3 or more players.
2. Hide and seek is a type of game that has various types in each type that has
different rules.
3. Simply in this game there is one person in charge of looking after, the other
players who swear.
4. When looking for a place to swear given time with a count, usually 1-10.
5. After the count reaches a predetermined number, ready or not he will look for
friends - friends who are hiding
6. Players who are guessed will be drawn to be chosen who will be in charge of
maintaining the next.
7. The first person he finds, that is what will later guard his position as a search and
guard post. Besides being able to do it in the garden, children usually play this
game in the house. Not infrequently the cupboard, under the bed, and under the
table becomes a hiding place

7. Egrang
This stilts game is actually quite unique and quite draining. Because players
must be skilled in maintaining body balance and walking steadily on long
wooden sticks. The game developed and was quite popular in the 1900s. There
are some who make the Egrang a traditional game, but also some consider it a
traditional sport. At present, the stilts themselves can only be found when
celebrating the Indonesian Proclamation of Independence on 17 August

How to play :
1. This game uses 1 pair of bamboo sticks.
2. This game is played by 2 or more players.
3. Upholstering the Stilts and slightly leaning forward

Egrang made from long stick , The stilts are made of bamboo sticks with a length
of approximately 2.5 meters. About 50 cm from the bottom, made a footrest that
is flat with a width of approximately 20 cm.
8. Bakiak
Clogs are actually traditional children's games in West Sumatra. Children from
West Sumatra who were born until the mid-1970s, often and usually play these
long clogs. In fact, these long clogs are one of the game events contested on
August 17 at the village and sub-district levels.

Bakiak made from Long wood like ice skates that have been smoothed (sanded,
red: banjar) and given a few slippers on it.
This game tests dexterity, leadership, cooperation, creativity, insight and
honesty. Clogs are one of the traditional games. The material is made of long
wood such as ice skates that have been mashed (sanded) and given a few
slippers above it, usually for 2-3 people. Playing clogs is usually in groups or
teams, each team competing to get to the finish line
9. Boian-Boian
Boian-boian is a traditional game originating from Java. This game is usually
played by boys and girls. Rural children often play it in the afternoon. We have
never seen this traditional game again. Boi-boian is almost the same as bowling.
We have to throw the ball at the target to be aimed at. To make a ball, we can use
rolled paper and tie it with a rubber band or we can use round balls. After that,
we collect broken stones or tiles which will later be arranged into a pyramid.

How to play :
1. The game is played by two teams of 4-5 players each.
2. This game uses a broken fraction tool which will be arranged upwards with a
number of 7-10 fractions
3. In addition to the broken pieces of ball, it is also a tool in this game, if there is
nothing unusual tricked by making a ball made of paper made like a ball and
tied with rubber bands.
4. The first tip serves as a constituent of precarious fractions and the second

 The tools or materials :

 Game place : In this boy-boyan game, it is usually done in a wide area,
such as a home page, school yard or field.
 Age and Number of Players :This boy-boy game is usually played by
children between the ages of 8 to 15 years. But there is no prohibition
for adults to play it.

10. Gasing
Gasing is a type of game that can rotate on his side, while balancing at one
point. Gasing is a traditional game of Malays since long ago. Usually played
after the harvest season. Top games are contested between villages. The
winner is supposed to be based on the period of the gasing period.

How to play :
1. The arm is held in the left hand, the right hand holds the rope. Wrap the
rope on top, starting from the top of the top or foot, to the top body.

Gasing is made of wood bebaru, kemuning, merbau, rambai, durian or
kundang. The wood will be notched and scraped so that it becomes a top

11. Gobak Sodor
The game Gobag Sodor is well-known in the area of Java. Many say that this
game comes from the Yogyakarta area. The name Gobak Sodor comes from
the words gobag and sodor. The word gobag means to move freely. While
Sodor means spear. In the past the soldiers had a game called sodoran as a
training skill in warfare. Sodor is a spear about 2 meters long, with no sharp
spear at the tip

How to play:

1. Make lines of guarding with chalk like a badminton court, the difference is there
are no double lines.
2. Divide players into two teams, one team consists of 3 - 5 or can be adjusted to the
number of participants. One team will be a "guard" team and the other team will
be an "opponent" team.
3. Team members who have the turn "guard" will guard the field, the way they are
guarded is horizontal lines and there are also those who maintain vertical
boundaries.
4. For horizontal line guards his job is to try to block their opponents who are also
trying to cross the boundary line that has been determined as a free boundary
line.
5. For someone who is tasked with maintaining a vertical boundary line, his job is to
maintain the entire vertical boundary line in the center of the field.
6. Whereas the team that becomes the "opponent", must try to cross the row to the
row to the back row, then return again through the opponent's guard until it gets
to the starting line.

Additional Information :

The number of players in the Gobag Sodor game must be even between 6-10
children. Then divided into two teams, the guard team and the attack team. So
each team has 3-5 children. Players in Gobag Sodor are usually boys, because this
game drains a lot of energy. But sometimes girls can also play it as long as both
teams must have a balanced composition of players both gender and age. This is
to avoid striking a very striking force on one team.

 Game Accompaniment

In playing Gobag Sodor, no accompaniment is needed, whether in the form of a


song or any sound of music.

 Preparation

What needs to be prepared in this game is the rectangular Gobag Sodor field.
Then between the long lines drawn the transverse lines so that they form several
rectangles. After that pull the center line perpendicular to the transverse line so
that there will be many equal plots. This line is called the Sodor line.
12. Pletokan
Called the name Pletokan because the sound produced from this game reads
"pletok". This traditional game comes from Jakarta which is a typical game of
the Betawi people. However, not only known by the people of Jakarta,
planking games are also known and played in several other regions in
Indonesia

How to Play:

1. Make two groups and find a place that can be used to hide and shoot.
2. Bullets are made of paper that is wet and made round and then inserted into
a bamboo hole.
3. Players have three chances, if they have been hit three times, they will fall.
4. The round lasts 2 times, if the series will be held in the second round.
5. At the beginning of the game there will be rules that will be implemented to
create security and sportsmanship.

Additional Information:
The small bamboo used is 30 cm long and 1/2 to 1 cm in diameter. There are two
amounts of bamboo needed for this game, the first as a barrel barrel, and the
other as a repellent or poke to fire bullets from inside the bamboo. For the second
bamboo, the bamboo must be made (by means of wrinkling) according to the
barrel circle in the first bamboo, and at the base of the bamboo it is formed for a
handle measuring around 10 cm.
While the bullets can be made from paper, guava seeds, flowers or leaves.
Especially for paper bullets and leaves, so that they can be shaped round the
paper must be moistened and then shaped like small balls. In order for this toy
tool to last and last a long time, choose bamboo that is old and strong so that
bamboo does not break easily when used.

13. Ular Naga


The dragon snake is known to have existed since ancient times, the game that
requires a lot of players is a game that is passed down from generation to
generation which is not so clear in origin and like what happened behind this
game, surely this game has its own historical value.
The name of the snake is because in this game players make long lines that
are likened to snakes, dragons are animals whose existence is uncertain, the
name of the dragon snake is clearly taken as a way of playing

How to play :
1. It takes at least 10 people in this game, two people are serving as guards and the
other eight are marching behind to form snakes, both hands are placed on the
shoulders of friends in front of them.
2. The two people face each other and hold hands and lift up.
3. After that the player spins while passing the two men in charge of guarding
earlier.
4. While the game is running, accompanied by singing, all the participants and
guards sing together, at the time of the last lyrics he will be clamped by the
guards and out of the snake.
5. The second player affected will be the chairman of the second group and the first
will be the first group leader.
6. The third participant and so on will be given the choice to follow which group,
usually given the code for what month the earth is.
7. After being captured by all, then the game of fighting for members between
groups begins.
Those whose members run out first are the losing group

Additional Information:
Snake Dragon is a group game that is usually played by Jakarta children outside
the house in the afternoon and evening. The playground is in the field or a rather
large yard. More interesting when played under moonlight. The players are
usually around 5-10 people, can also be more, children aged 5-12 years (TK - SD).
14. Kwaci
Kwaci which is meant here is not a type of food from sunflower seeds. Kwaci
in question is a type of game made of flat-shaped plastic material with

How to play:
1. First two parallel lines are made on the ground with a distance of 1 meter to 2 meters.
2. Each player throws his cheats (cracks) which can be in the form of small pieces of
ceramics or can also use the drawer itself to pass through the two lines.
3. For the child who is closest to the intended line, then he is the most entitled to start
this game first.
4. The collected kwaci is thrown in the middle between the two lines. If there is a
drawer coming out of the boundary of the two lines, then the quart is declared dead
and may not be played.
5. By using ucak, the scattered squares are knocked down and thrown out of the two
lines and may be taken for those who have succeeded in knocking them out. Whereas
if the drawer does not make it out the line or the player does not even hit the target,
then he is considered dead and must change his turn with the other play
6. This game can only be declared finished when the entire quart has been successfully
removed from the two lines
