Preface

This Instructor’s Manual is designed to summarize and add additional material to Curt White’s
Fundamentals of Networking and Data Communications, Sixth Edition. The summarization of
the text material will provide the user with a convenient overview of each chapter to organize a
lecture or other classroom presentations. The additional material includes chapter Learning
Objectives, Chapter Outline, Lecture Notes, Teaching Tips, Solutions to Review Questions, and
Suggested Solutions to Exercises. The Teaching Tips and Quick Quiz questions are suggestions
based on classroom experiences, which an instructor may use to encourage student participation
in the subject matter. Further Readings and Resources exist for each chapter, but due to their
constantly changing nature, appear on the author’s web page at
http://facweb.cs.depaul.edu/cwhite.

The organization of Fundamentals of Networking and Data Communications, Sixth Edition

roughly follows the TCP/IP protocol suite from the physical layer to the upper layers. It has been
carefully designed to consist of 13 chapters in order to fit well into a typical 15- or 16-week
semester along with any required exams. With a little modification, the book could also work
with a quarter system. The intent was to create a set of chapters each of which provides a
balanced introduction to the study of computer networks. Each instructor may choose to
emphasize or de-emphasize certain topics, allowing for flexibility in the week-to-week
curriculum.

This Manual contains supplemental features for each chapter in the text. These include:

 Learning Objectives
 Chapter Outlines
 Quick Quiz
 Discussion Topics
 Teaching Tips
 Further Reading and Resources
 Solutions to Review Questions
 Suggested Solutions to Exercises

This Instructor’s Manual will help you guide your students through different approaches to
learning the basic concepts of data communications and computer networks.

Contents of this Manual

Learning Objectives: These brief statements from the textbook describe the key goals for the
material in a particular chapter. This list will help the instructor prioritize topics and organize
lecture formats.

Chapter Outline: The chapter is presented in outline form to provide a way to quickly determine
the contents of each section.

Lecture Notes: Text material for every chapter is summarized to provide the user with a
convenient overview of each chapter to organize a lecture or other classroom presentations
around.

Quick Quiz: These are 3-5 questions an instructor can pose to the class to determine if they are
understanding and mastering the material. If the class cannot answer the quick quiz, they need
more explanation. These quizzes are meant to be an informal oral quiz to ensure the students are
grasping the material

Discussion Topics: A series of topics related to material in each chapter are provided. These
items can be used in the course lectures, developed in classroom discussion, or used as research
ideas.

Teaching Tips: This section offers ideas to add spice to lecture-based presentations of the course
material. Tips range from in-class exercises to Internet-based resource utilization.

Further Readings and Resources: (On the author’s web page at

http://facweb.cs.depaul.edu/cwhite) Additional readings, Internet sites, or current interest areas
related to the chapter are provided in this section.

Solutions to Review Questions and Suggested Solutions to Exercises: At the end of each chapter
are numerous review questions and exercises. While the review questions are simpler and cover
the basic concepts presented in the chapter, the exercises require a more in-depth examination of
the chapter materials. All solutions have been provided except where student answers may vary.
