THE PROBLEM FACED BY UNIKL MIAT STUDENTS DURING ON JOB TRAINING (OJT) - STUDENTS

AND INDUSTRIAL’S PERSPECTIVES by INTAN FATIMAH SASILA and AINA SURIANI MAHMOOD
2.1 Definition of On the Job Training (OJT)

On the Job Training, Industrial training, internship, practicum. These are some of the words used
interchangeably, which referred to a placement for student at the industry to gain knowledge and
experience in the real professional working environment. According to Furco (1996), OJT can be defined
as program which engaging students with the industry for the purpose of providing them with the
technical and hands-on experience.

Burnett (2003) states that OJT can be defined as the best outside classroom learning activities. OJTs are
seen as valuable learning experience for students to do more hands on at the aircraft. During the 6 months
period, NorazahYusof (2012) states that students are required to get involve with the work or project that
related to their major field, solve the given problems professionally, work in a team, interact and
communicate effectively, and demonstrate excellent ethics and integrity in their work conducts.

2.2 Advantages On the Job Training (OJT)

While,Shariff et al., (2008) states that the OJT involves three main parties; firstly, the trainee undergoing
the OJT, secondly, the University supervisor that will evaluate the students during the OJT duration, and
thirdly, the Industry Supervisor that offers the OJT placement for students. There are many well-known
advantages that have been discussed earlier in the previous related research.

Based on the Simone J Van Zolinger (2000) study, he has mentioned that with a strong link between the
training and the practices during the OJT, it will give the positive impact on trainees’ motivation. Besides
that study which is done by M.Z.Omar (2008), hehighlights that, OJT improved communication and
students’ work attitude. The students are exposed to the real working environment and feel more
confident to work with aircraft. This is agreed by Nora Muda (2012), she states that OJT provides an
opportunity for the students to feel the environment to work in the real situation. This will give them
some overviews what they want to do after graduate. According Norina Ahmad Jamil( 2012), OJT is the
best opportunity for students to gain valuable applied experience, and these might give them considering
their career paths while make connections in professional field. JamaludinJalani (2016) also states that
the students can use the theoretical knowledge that they have learned at university and apply them in
the form of technical skills at aircraft. In the purpose to make this advantage achieved, NorazahYusof
(2012) states that the industrial supervisor should guide and assess the trainees in term of performance
and soft skill. Some of the soft skills that can be evaluated are such as team working, communication skills
and also commercial awareness.

The Effects of On-the-Job Training
by Lisa McQuerrey

Real-Life Applications
It’s one thing to read a job description and hear a verbal overview of job responsibilities; it’s another to
actually watch others or do the tasks yourself as you’re learning. On-the-job training provides new employees
with real-life experience in the field, which can make you, as an employee, more confident. You’ll have a
mentor close by to help you trouble-shoot, figure out problems and explain to you why some actions and
approaches are better than others.

Learn From Experience

Some skills can’t be taught – they must be demonstrated. Still other job functions are conditional in nature; in
other words, while one action may apply in one circumstance, it could be different in another. For example, if
you’re job training for a customer service position, you may be instructed on how to issue customer refunds. It
could be that Customer A comes in without a receipt, but your mentor issues the refund regardless. Customer
B comes in with numerous returns and no receipt, and is a known shoplifter. Your mentor turns down the
refund request. You can learn from her experience that some types of work involve judgment calls you can
only learn through experience.

Job “Fit”
Sometimes a job that looks great on paper isn’t what you expected it would be in reality. You may decide you
don’t care for the line of work or that you don’t have the ability to effectively perform the job functions. In this
case, on-the-job training can help you determine quickly that a position is not for you. It’s good for you and for
your employer to find this out sooner rather than later.

Colleague Bonding
On-the-job training is often conducted by managers or experienced employees. Getting to know these
individuals while being trained can give you an insider’s look at how the company runs, and how you’ll fit in.
You’ll learn different personality types and figure out who to talk to about work problems and how to best
interact with superiors. You can also learn tips and techniques only experienced workers know, like how to un-
jam the copy machine, who to call to get your computer fixed or what’s the best thing to eat from the sandwich
cart.

Disadvantages of on-the-job training (OJT)

Low Productivity

The trainees are taken at the actual workstation for training; hence, they are in the
process of learning skills. As a result, the organizational productivity will be lower.

Errors in Production

Since the trainees are not involved with production activities, the will be the
possibility of errors in production activities. The goods produced by trainees will be
qualitative.

Costly

OJT method is costly in the sense that the workers are disturbed by training
activities; the goods produced by the trainees will have less quality and there will
be chances of damage to goods. These all result in higher cost of production.

Disturbance

Disturbance may arise during the work process as trainees are in the learning
phase. The existing workers may feel disturbed due to the trainees and the
supervisors.

Possibility of Accidents

Under OJT, the learners are directly involved in production process who do not
have adequate knowledge and skill of working with the given equipment and
materials. Hence, the possibility of accidents exists at the workstation.
