CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents about the background of the study, scope and limitation of the
study, statements of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study and definitio
of the key terms used.

A. Background of the tudy

Translation is very important in writers’ life. Moreover if the writers have role as
translators. They need to know more than one languages if they would like to be good
translators for readers. Not only master the source language and the target language, but the
translators also need to master cultures for both SL and TL, topics or focuses what texts are
translated, capable of comprehending written texts receptively, able to express ideas writtenly
and productively as well as able to use any kinds of dictionaries and other references,
Suryawinata and Hariyanto, 2003:27.

Indonesia adopted a genre-based curriculum in 2004 for the teaching of English in

Indonesian schools (Emilia, Hermawan & Tati, 2008). It covers four English basic skill;
listening, reading and writing, translation ability is include in writing skill but many people
still have low knowledge about how to translation, they only focus on learn four language
skills there are listening, speaking, reading and writing that generally learns in the
school.learning translation is not only inportatnt for education, but also inportant for our daily
life, for indonesians people learn english for engagement and improvment relation with other
nations, for students the function of English is can improve their abilities in science,
technology, art and culture so they will not feel neglected in their society.

Translating consist of several processess and considerations in producing the good

translation. However, it seems that the students do not recognize this. They do not really
understand that translation is really complex activity. They may think that translating is
simply only the process of changing the source language word into target language word,
that is why they make their translation simply by bringing their Indonesian thingking into
English, they usually use literal translation when translating text. According to Budianto and
Fardhani (2010:2) defines that translaton as a craft consisting in attempt to replace a written
message and statement in one language by the same message and statement in other
language, in his definition, he underlines that the inportant thing in translation is the message.
Translation should express the same message as the message of the source language offered,
learner s of English as foreign language (EFL) in Indonesia generally feel that translating,
particularry translating indonesian to english is very difficult task. This understandable,
considering that translating is very complex task demanding some integrated competencies
(Yuliasri, 2014:107)

In the translation activity, of course there are some things that need to be considered,
one of them is the word choice which is very important to make the translation result not
ambigous, Translation activities can be performed to determine the structure of understanding
a foreign language, translation is not easy work to be done, especially for beginner, most of
students from senior high school face a lot of problems in translating a foreign language,
where English as foreign language in this country and English must be studied by student in
senior high school. According to (Fajrin:2012) translation course is one of the compulsory
subjects that must be studied by the students.

In the process of translating, the students have many difficulties to translate some
texts in their books, expecially, as they learned in English lesson there are some kind of text,
such as argumentative, dexcriptive,, exposition, and narrative text in the school that become
subject of this research, The teacher acknowledge the studentS found difficulties in learning
English especially in translating activity, some of the difficulties faced by the students are the
students feel difficult to understand the meaning of the text, the students have difficulties to
translate new vocabulary, and so on. To understand the text the students should be able to
translate each sentence or each paragraph of the text, between the kind of the text, the
researcher focuses on one the kind of text above, that is narrative text.

Narrative are stories about person or a group of people overcoming problems(Joyce &
Feez, 2000, p.24). They also explain that naratives show how people react to experiences,
explore social and cultural values and entertain the audience. It aims to entertain, to get and
retain the attention of the reader or listener of the story. students can not understand the
problem of the story &chronology of story or storyline if students wrong in translating the
text. But, when the students read and the students have to understand the content of narrative
text, most of students find the difficulties to translete the meaning of the text. As Rini ,J.E
(2007) did a research at the beginner translator students at english departement of petra
christian university conclue that some students still make mistakes on trivial items, wich are
the problems of language, based on explanation before, the researchr believes tht the students
in senior highschool also find difficulties when they translate narrative text.

To overcome these problems, certainy it needed some of tricks or treatment that the
teacher or the lecturer uses in the class when they teach translation, they have to choose the
good treatment in order that the students can be overcome the problems, and chos the good
treatment that the teachers want to use, the most important thing that the teacher should know
about difficulties that students face in translatingnarrative text and know what is the cause of
the problem.

Because of that, Trough analyzing students difficulties, the people can know what are
the difficulties that the students face, so, the researcher try to find the students difficulties by
conducted a research entitled “ An Analysis of Students Difficulties in translating narrative
