Crea ng Brackets in Plan View

Crea ng Brackets in Plan View

The process for crea ng brackets in plan view is started by clicking the
"Brackets in Plan View" icon in the "Insert" toolbar which opens the
following panel:

or selec ng one of the "Insert" > "Brackets" -> "In Plan View" menu op ons.
Each icon represents a par cular type (i.e. a par cular shape) of bracket.
The number of icons depends on the number of bracket types included in
the bracke ypes.dat file in the %ncgnorms%\bracket directory. A er a
bracket has been created, the user is returned to the bracket menu, which
will allow him to create addi onal brackets. A bracket can be modified by
clicking the "Modify Brackets" bu on in the "Insert Brackets in Plan View"
panel or by clicking the "Brackets" icon in the "Modify 3D" toolbar, see also
the Modifying brackets paragraph.
Once the bracket menu panel has been opened, the user can select a
par cular bracket type by clicking its icon. This starts the crea on process.
First, the parts to which the bracket is related should be selected. The hint
indicates the type of part (hull line, plate, flange or profile in sec on, plate
or profile in plan view) that should be selected. Only the part types that
have been included in the type macro may be selected. A part that has been
selected cannot be selected again. When all relevant parts have been
selected, the main panel for a bracket type is opened. This panel may look
like this:

The panel contains the following op ons:

Standards

This op on is only shown if brackets have been defined with standard

dimensions. The standards are defined in the bracket<typenr>.inp file in the
%ncgnorms%\bracket directory. If the free bu on has been checked, the list
with standards will be frozen.
Part number
If a standard has been selected, the box will contain the part number that
has been specified in the type macro for a par cular standard. The name of
the standard may be the same as the part number. If no value is entered,
the value 0 will be stored in the database. If the free bu on is ac vated this
box will be emp ed. Normally for a free bracket the posnumber is 0.
However also for a free bracket a value for the posnumber can be entered.
The entered value will be checked. If in the case of a free bracket a
posnumber is entered which is the same as the posnumber for a standard
defined for that type of bracket a warning will be presented.
Free
This bu on may be used to choose between a free bracket and a standard
bracket. If a free bracket is chosen, values must be entered in the entry
boxes and the list with standards will be frozen. If a par cular standard has
been chosen, all entry boxes will be frozen and contain the values for that
par cular standard.
Ques on[i]

The ques ons that may be asked here relate to the dimensions of the
bracket and any corner holes, rounding curvatures, and overlaps that may
be present.

Answer[i]
The answers to the ques ons asked.
Thickness direc on
This op on can only be selected if plates or profiles in sec on or hull lines
or a combina on of both have been selected. See the Bracket thickness
direc on sec on for further explana on.

Dimensions

If this bu on is clicked, a list of the dimension texts set in label 8 of the type
macro is displayed. This bu on may be used if a text type and symbol type
other than the default should be placed with the bracket.
Material
This op on may be used to select the type of material for the bracket.

Automa c
This op on enables the user to create a flange, face plate or profile on the
bracket. The default value Automa c lets the so ware create them,
depending on the rules defined in the type files.

The "Flange/profiles" value ensures that a flange will be created if one has
been defined in the file types, independent of the check for the length of
the flange or profile. If the user selects "No flange/profiles", no flange, face
plate or profile will be created, even though their crea on is possible and
perhaps even desirable in accordance with the standard that may have
been chosen.
Icon
This contains the icon of the selected bracket. By clicking the icon, the user
returns to the bracket menu panel.
OK
The data are accepted and the program calculates the contour of the
bracket if this is possible in the current situa on.

Bracket Thickness Direc on

Bracket Thickness Direc on

When crea ng brackets, the following points should be taken into
considera on:
If only one of the construc on parts is a plate, profile, or shell frame
in plan view, the thickness direc on of the bracket will be the
opposite of the thickness direc on of the plate, profile, or shell frame
in plan view. In that case, however, the bracket should overlap the
plate, profile, or shell frame.
If reference is made to two plates, profiles, and/or shell frames in
plan view that have the same thickness direc on and the bracket
overlaps both parts, the thickness direc on of the bracket will be the
opposite of the thickness direc on of the construc on parts.
If reference is made to two plates, profiles, and/or shell frames in
plan view that have the same thickness direc on but there is no
overlap between the bracket and the parts, the thickness direc on of
the bracket will be the same as the thickness direc on of the
construc on parts.
If reference is made to two plates, profiles, and/or shell frames in
plan view that have the same thickness direc on while there is only
one overlap, the message "It is not logical to create a bracket here"
will be displayed. The panel containing this message allows the user
to select one of three op ons:
OK - The bracket will be created
Cancel - The bracket will not be created
Help - The bracket will be created
If reference is made to two plates, profiles, and/or shell frames in
plan view that have different thickness direc ons, the bracket can
only be created if it overlaps with one of the parts.
If reference is made to two plates, profiles, or shell frames in sec on,
the default thickness direc on will depend on the posi on of the
bracket plane in the sec on (towards the reversed frame or away
from the reversed frame).

Modifying Brackets

Modifying Brackets
To modify a bracket click the "Brackets" icon in the "Modify 3D" toolbar or
select one of the "Modify -> "Brackets" menu op ons:

Bracket in Plan View

A er clicking the icon the user can indicate a bracket that has already been
created in the drawing. Then, the same main panel appears that was
displayed when the bracket was created, but now the entry boxes contain
the values defined when the bracket was created.

If reference was made to a profile in plan view, the values will be those that
best fit this profile according to the type macro. The tle of the panel differs
from the one shown when a bracket was created, because it not only
contains the bracket type but also the number of the bracket in the
construc on database. If values of parts to which the bracket is related have
been modified, it may be that the standard of the bracket to be recalculated
has also changed.

The panel displayed has the following op ons:

Standard - Use this op on if the standard should be modified. This
bu on will only be displayed if standards have been defined for this
bracket type.
Part number - The part number may be changed if it is not frozen. If
the user opts for a free bracket, the entry box will be cleared (i.e.
made empty).
Free - If, depending on the parts to which the bracket is related, the
type macro chooses a standard, this bu on allows the user to opt for
a free bracket (i.e. with dimensions freely defined by the user) of the
same type instead.
Thickness - If this op on is displayed in the panel, the direc on
bracket's standard thickness direc on may be modified (see Bracket
Thickness Direc on).

Dimensions - Use this op on if another dimension text type than the

default is required. The dimension text types that may be selected are
defined in label 8 of the type macro.
Material - The material code of the bracket may be changed.
Automa c - If the type macro allows the crea on of a flange or face
plate, this bu on will func on (i.e. not be frozen).
Icon - This allows modifica on of the type of the exis ng bracket. It
opens the bracket menu panel for the selec on of a bracket type to
be created. The procedure from then is the same as crea ng a new
bracket. However this bracket will have the same name in the
database and will use the same database loca on as the original
bracket.
OK - The bracket is created anew with the modifica ons. This may
also occur if the user has not entered any new values but the related
parts have been modified. The bracket is stored in the database in the
same loca on as the original bracket. It may be, therefore, that a
totally different bracket is created with the same name.

Modifying Brackets in Sec on

Modifying Brackets in Sec on

Select the bracket(s) in sec on to be modified with the normal selec on
method. This can be mul ple brackets of one or more bracket type(s).
If brackets are selected of mul ple bracket types the modify panel
containing the bracket dimensions appears once for each bracket type. So if
for example ten brackets of type 750, eight brackets of type 755 and five
brackets of type 762 are selected the modify panel appears three mes,
ones for type 750, once for type 755 and once for type 762.
For bracket types for which standard dimensions are defined, the correct
dimensions are automa cally selected and applied for each individual
bracket of that type in the selec on set. The modify panel presents in that
case only for the first bracket of that type in the selec on set the
automa cally selected dimension values. So depending on the size of the
rela ons of the bracket, brackets of one par cular type can get different
dimensions.
By using the free toggle in the modify panel all selected brackets of that
par cular bracket type will get the same dimensions. The ones that are
inserted in the modify panel.
In case of a bracket type for which no standard dimensions are defined all
brackets will get the same dimensions as specified in the modify panel.
The bracket type icon in the modify panel can be used to highlight in the
drawing the selected brackets of the relevant type.
Limita ons:

Brackets with four rela ons cannot be changed with this op on.

Crea ng A ributes on Brackets

Crea ng A ributes on Brackets

It is possible to have the following a ributes on brackets:
Flanges and face plates
Profiles
Bevels

Adding flanges/face plates to brackets

Flanges and face plates on brackets are defined in the bracket type file and
the bracket type macro. This allows them to be added automa cally upon
crea ng the bracket. The placement of flanges defined in the type files can
be controlled in the bracket create and modify dialogs, using the
"Automa c" op on. See Crea ng brackets in plan view for details.

Placing profiles on brackets

This can be realized by either defining them in the bracket type file and the
bracket type macro, or by placing them onto brackets manually.

Defining profiles in the bracket type files

This allows the profiles to be added automa cally upon crea ng the
bracket. The placement of profiles defined in the type files can be
controlled in the bracket create and modify dialogs in the same way as with
flanges and face plates.

Placing profiles onto brackets manually

Profiles can be placed onto brackets in the same way as profiles can be
placed onto plates.

Placing bevels on brackets

Bevels on brackets are defined in the bracket type file and the bracket type
macro. This allows them to be added automa cally upon crea ng the
bracket. When a bevel is defined in the type file, it will always be placed. For
more informa on, see Adding Bevels Automa cally.

Modifying A ributes on Brackets

Modifying A ributes on Brackets

It is possible to modify the following a ributes on brackets:
Flanges and face plates
Profiles
Bevels

Modifying flanges, face plates and profiles on brackets

Flanges, face plates and profiles on brackets defined in the bracket type files
can be modified individually or collec vely. When modifying them for
specific brackets, it is recommended to do it individually.
Modifying a flange, face plate or profile(s) for a specific bracket
Any one of them created via the bracket type files can be modified with the
general func ons for modifying each respec vely, with the excep on of the
flange, face plate, or profile rela ons. These modifica ons will not be
affected when recalcula ng the bracket, but will be overwri en by the
bracket type macro when modifying the bracket.

Profiles that have been placed onto a bracket without the use of bracket
type files will never be affected.

Modifying flanges, face plates and profiles for all brackets

This can be realized by modifying them in the bracket type file and the
bracket type macro.

Modifying bevels
Bevels defined in the bracket type files can be modified individually or
collec vely. When modifying them for specific brackets, it is recommended
to do it individually. For more informa on, see Modifying Bevel A ributes.

Modifying bevels for a specific bracket

This is done with the "Modify Bevels" func on and will override its
defini on in the type macro. The type macro will no longer have any
influence on that par cular bevel. Once a bevel is manually overridden, its
link with the type macro is gone and can not be restored.
Modifying bevels for all brackets

This is realized by modifying them in the bracket type file and the bracket
type macro.

Removing A ributes from Brackets

Removing A ributes from Brackets

It is possible to remove the following a ributes from brackets:
Flanges and face plates
Profiles
Bevels

Removing flanges, face plates and profiles from

brackets
Flanges, face plates and profiles can be removed from brackets by
modifying the bracket or by removing them from the bracket physically.
Modifying the bracket
When modifying the bracket, selec ng "No flange/profiles" will remove
them from the bracket. They can be restored in the same way.
Removing flanges, face plates and profiles physically

Any one of them created via the bracket type files can also be removed with
the general func on for removing construc on, and will not return when
recalcula ng the bracket. Only via modifying the bracket can they be
restored.

Removing bevels
Bevels are removed automa cally when the bracket they belong to is
removed. They can not be removed manually.
