WHAT IS
CERVICAL
MUCUS?

3
CERVICAL MUCUS
◇ The fluid that the cervix releases into the vagina.
◇ Alternatingly used with cervical fluids, vaginal
discharge, fertile discharge, white blood
◇ The amount, texture, and appearance is
influenced by hormonal changes through out
woman’s reproductive cycle

4
CERVICAL MUCUS
The job of cervical mucus is to either:
◇ Prevent things from entering the uterus through
the cervix
◇ To nourish and help transport sperm through the
cervix into the uterus

5
WHAT IS FERTILE
DISCHARGE?

6
FERTILE DISCHARGE
◇ Fertile discharge is thin, clear or white, and
slippery, much the same as a raw egg white. This
type of discharge signals that ovulation is
approaching.
◇ Follicles in the uterus house a ripening egg and
produces estrogen. When ruptured, the body
ovulates releasing an egg.
◇ Estrogen changes the texture of cervical fluid,
making it more able to support fertility.
7
WHAT IS
LEUKORRHEA?

8
LEUKORRHEA (WHITE BLOOD)
◇ Leukorrhea is a mild, odorless discharge from the
vagina that is clear, cloudy or milky in color.
◇ During pregnancy due to the increased blood
flow to the vaginal area and the increase in
pregnancy hormones, like progesterone, you
may notice more of this discharge.
◇ It’s filled with fluid and cells that are being shed
from the vagina, and it may even look slightly
yellow at times.
9
Thin, stretchy mucus is considered
fertile, as it happens around the time
when your egg may be released. White,
thick discharge is considered infertile
cervical mucus.
