Ethernet Connection
Virtual Network Switch (VNS)

The latest generation of VIMS hardware requires Ethernet-based connection. VIMSpc utilizes Virtual Network
Switch (VNS) mechanism to communicate with the machine. VNS is a software application that acts as a
switch in transferring the packets of information from one network to another using a single Network Interface
Card (NIC). VIMSpc will modify the network settings of VNS rather than the actual physical network card.

However, the laptop can be used in the field as well as in the office without changing the Settings of physical
network card.

VNS is shown as 'Caterpillar Machine Network Connection' on the PC. When VIMSpc is un-installed, VNS is
removed along with the driver files needed by the virtual adapter.

NOTE: The connected ECM and IP Address of the PC should be in the same network.

When VIMSpc connects to a machine for the first time, it prompts the user to select a physical adapter.

Do not choose the wireless adapter card.

To select physical adapter

1. Plug VIMS cable (Ethernet cable) into the PC's Ethernet port.

NOTE: Only by doing the above step, the status of LAN adapter will be shown as "connected"
in the Select Ethernet Adapter pop-up window.

2. Click Settings. The Settings screen displays.

Introduction
This troubleshooting instruction is intended to diagnose and troubleshoot VIMSpc common connectivity
issues. It can be in Electronic Control Modules ECMs of VIMS 3G - 2851142 , PRODUCT LINK 523 -
3518492, PL Elite - 459-0786 on Ethernet port, and VIMS ABL2M - 327-3520, VIMS 68K - 130-5131, TPM
ABL1M - 169-0489, TPM Legacy - 3E-7841, PCS A4M3 - 252-2422, PCS Legacy - 148-6376 on Ethernet port.

VIMSpc incorporates the previous VIMSpc connect software that connects to machines with VIMS 3G,
through a network cable attached to the user laptop and VIMS 3G service port. VIMSpc handles the IP
addresses involved when connecting.

If the connection gets hung up, kill VIMSpc.exe, open Windows Task Manager (using ctrl+alt+del) and look in
processes for VIMSpcNet.exe. If running, terminate the process. Then start VIMSpc again and try to recon-
nect.

If VIMSpc is not connected, try connecting to another Ethernet by opening "Network Connections", from Con-
trol Panel. If the Local Area Connection shows "Unplugged" but is not unplugged, disable and then enable the
device. It should be connected.

Important Safety Information

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to
observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous
situations before an accident occurs.

The user must be alert to potential hazards. He should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to
perform these functions properly.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings
are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate
every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication
and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive.

Step 1

Refer to VIMSpcSelfCheck.log in the "Step 6: Gather Log Files and Status Report" of "VIMSpc Failed to Con-
nect to VIMS 3G Machine using version 2015A or later" section to ensure that the Caterpillar Machine Net-
work Connection has been installed and correctly referenced to the appropriate Local Area Connection port.

Step 2

Identify the Correct Network Adapter and set obtaining the IP address automatically

Plugging into a live Ethernet network will toggle the status of the local area connection network adapter. Once
this is plugged in, monitor the status of the Network Connections of PC and verify which one will change. This
can be performed on a powered ON machine with VIMS ethernet cable or USB to ethernet adapter.

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > View network status and tasks > Change
adapter settings.

Step 1: Verify the Air Card (Cellular Card) is removed and Virtual Private Network (VPN) is not con-
nected.

Air Card

If the air card is installed, the Caterpillar Network Adapter will try to access the Air Card's Network con-
nection. When the Caterpillar Network Adapter is connected to the Air Card's Network, the physical Local
Area Network Port will not be utilized, which is required. So the Cat® Network Adapter will try to utilize the air
card's physical port.

NOTE: Ensure that the air card is removed and the network adapter status is shown as disabled.

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > View network status and tasks > Change
adapter settings.

Step 5: Has VIMS Module IP address been changed from Default?

The above screenshot shows that the VIMS Main ECM runs with the earlier versions of VIMS software.

The “Software Group Description” for earlier versions of VIMS software doesn’t have “Underscore” in the
string (e.g., VIMS3G 7.2 Production 1 ). If yes it would need a custom IP address (i.e., Manual PC Network
configuration change in order to configure the PC and VIMS Main ECM to be in a same subnet mask range).

The above screenshot shows that the VIMS Main ECM runs with the newer versions of VIMS software.

The “Software Group Description” for newer versions of VIMS software would have “Underscore” in the string
(e.g., PLGSM_Q3_PROD_2.0). For newer versions of VIMS software, Custom IP address (i.e., Manual PC
Network configuration is not needed).

If Manual PC Network Configuration is necessary, perform the following steps:

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > View network status and tasks > Change
adapter settings.

Troubleshooting in Installation
Installation hangs
Cause #1

Several factors can cause this condition. Other processes or programs may be using lots of system
resources, leaving insufficient resources for the installation to complete as normal.

Solution #1

Open the Windows Task Manager and examine the figures shown on the Performance tab. If the CPU is run-
ning at 100%, the system is probably just very busy and you should leave the installation to complete in its
own time. It is unusual for the system to be at 100% CPU for very long unless something very resource–
intensive is running. If something else is using a lot of resources, consider running the installation at a later
time. If no processes are known to be running and nothing obvious shows up when checking, it may be
prudent to run a virus scan to determine if a virus has made its way into the system.

Cause #2

Insufficient disk space.

Solution #2

Check that you have sufficient disk space to complete the installation. If there is not enough disk space avail-
able to install the VIMSpc, a message will display telling you how much disk space you need to free up. Once
enough disk space has been made available, begin the installation again.

Cause #3

System has hung.

Solution #3

The system may be hung or become unstable. Check for other programs that are still running and responding,
and check the Applications tab of the Task Manager to see whether any programs have a status of Not
Responding. If any applications are not responding, close them and see if the installation process continues.
If not, you may have to exit the installer and try again after the system resumes.
