Executive Summary
After completing the six semesters of BBA program, I got an opportunity of getting a practical
knowledge about the industrial system in Pakistan. So to quench the thirst of practical exposure
and for getting the basic knowledge about the industry I joined MARHABA LABORATORIES
(PVT) LTD. During my internship tenure at Marhaba, I gather all necessary information about
the company with the best practical experience.
Efforts have been made to compile this report in such a way that activates its salient features not
only for students but also for the layman. The report is started with the introduction of the herbal
industry followed by the complete company profile.
Moving forward to the important section of the report, that is, the SWOT Analysis of
MARHABA that describes all the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats MARHABA
is facing or might face in future. Then, I have recommended the suggestions to the problems I
have analyzed during my stay at MARHABA.

INDUSTRY BACKGROUND
Geographically, Pakistan is located in a transitional zone where the summer monsoon influenced
climate of the east gradually merges with the winter precipitation dominated Mediterranean
climate of the west. Out of the total land area of Pakistan, 88% is classified as arid and semi-arid,
with only 12% being humid and sub-humid, primarily located in the Himalayan and Karakoram
ranges. Only 5% of the country’s total area is under forest cover. Of the nearly 6000 species of
flowering plants reported to be occurring in Pakistan and Kashmir, a very large number is found
in the northern and north-western parts of Pakistan. The resource based areas of medicinal plants
includes lesser Himalaya, upper Himalaya, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, Salt range, Baluchistan,
Deserts, Sindh and sulaiman range.
Long standing research on medicinal plants of Pakistan in the last fifty years points to a rich
resource base, spread over a wide range of ecological zones, with estimates of numbers of plant
species having medicinal properties varying from 1000-3,200 species. Of these species,
approximately 500 are known for their active constituents from research conducted in Pakistan
and elsewhere and around 250-300 species known to have entered the herbal markets of
Pakistan. It has been reported that approximately 400 to 600 medicinal plants are more
frequently used in herbal preparations and though several species which are common in specific
areas are known to be used locally in traditional preparations, which have not been scientifically
investigated for wider use. A lot of work therefore needs to be done with regard to collection and
compilation of indigenous knowledge about plants, especially amongst tribes living in the
western mountains.
There are approximately over 400 manufacturers of herbal trade products in Pakistan. Although
there are referred 125 registered firms or industrial units with Pakistan Tibbi Pharmaceutical
Manufacturing Association (PTPMA). The phytopharmaceutical industrial set up can be
classified either as of industrial or Dawakhana category. There are round about 1300 or more raw
material herbal supplier (traders, shops, whole sellers) which serve the market as well as the
industry. The herbal product market in Pakistan is sizeable in characterization but small to tune
of Rs. 5 billion as compared to Rs. 35 billion of pharmaceuticals. However, at this stage it is
rather difficult to predict the exact financial quantum of phytopharmaceutical market.

Finance Department
The goal of any finance function is to achieve three benefits: business support service, lowest
costs and effective control of the environment. Money is the lifeblood of a business and finance
is the nerve center. Finance is required to promote or create a business, gain assets, develop
products, run market surveys, advertise. The conventional view of finances focuses on being
reactive, efficient, quantitative and risk averse. New innovative views focus on being vision-
oriented, opportunity and growth focused, intuitive and risk-taking.
The finance department of a business takes responsibility for organizing the financial and
accounting affairs including the preparation and presentation of appropriate accounts, and the
provision of financial information for managers.
Finance department is under the control of Muhammad Iqram Director of finance of marhaba.
He looks over the finance department under his supervision there is a designation of CFO whose

University of Central Punjab Page | 15

ultimate duty is to maintain the accounts of the company and provide assistance to director so
that he can talk necessary decisions.
There are almost seven to eight employees in the finance department their work is to
communicate with the supplier so that financial relation between two companies or between
marhaba and his suppliers runs smoothly.
One of the main duty of the finance department is Payables and Receivables; the finance
department manages all cash flow into and out of a business. Vendors and creditors need
payment correctly and on time to keep things running smoothly. You need to stay liquid--the
right amount of cash on hand--at all times and finance must maintain payment plans that keep
everything on track.
Book keeping procedures; keeping records of the purchases and sales made by a business as
well as capital spending. These records today are typically kept on computer files. But we still
use the term ledger entries to refer to the days when all financial transactions were carefully
recorded in thick books (ledgers).
Creating a balance sheet and profit and loss account; financial statements need to be
produced at given time intervals, for example at the end of each financial year. Trial balances are
extracted from the ledger entries to create a Balance Sheet showing the assets and liabilities of a
business at the year end. In addition, records of purchases and sales are totaled up to create a
Profit and Loss (P&L) account.
Besides all this finance department in marhaba is responsible for each and every penny which
company spend in daily routine. They have to keep record and provide financial assistance to
other departments such as admin to purchase the daily routine items such as stationary.
To sum it up we can say that finance department in marhaba is responsible to make good
working relationship not only with outside suppliers but also with the other departments inside
the company.

Procurement Department
To fulfill the demand of the company and make the purchase easy for the company marhaba has
a separate department. The expert tries their level best to make the purchase valuable for the
company. They always make sure that whatever they purchase is up to the quality which is
required by the company.
To understand better what the role of the purchasing department is, consider some functions it
performs.

Procuring Materials
One role of the purchasing department is to procure all necessary materials needed for
production or daily operation of the company. For a production company, this might include raw
materials such as herbal material or plastics, but it also might include tools, machinery, delivery
trucks or even the office supplies needed for the secretaries and sales team. In a retail
environment, the purchasing department makes sure there is always sufficient product on the
shelves or in the warehouses to keep the customers happy and keep the store well-stocked.
Purchasing also oversees all of the vendors that supply a company with the items it needs to
operate properly.

Evaluating Price
A purchasing department also is charged with continuously evaluating whether it is receiving
these materials at the best possible price in order to maximize profitability. This can be
challenging for a small business that may purchase in lesser quantities than a larger vendor and
which thus may not receive the same type of bulk discounts. A purchasing department in a small
business needs to shop around to find the best vendors at the most reasonable prices for the
company's particular size orders. Purchasing department staff may communicate with alternate
vendors, negotiate better pricing for bulk orders or investigate the possibility of procuring
cheaper materials from alternative sources as part of their daily activities.

University of Central Punjab Page | 17

Policy Compliance
The purchasing department also must ensure that it is complying with all company policies. For
example, in a marhaba, individual staff members may communicate with the purchasing
department about purchasing needs for things such as office supplies or computers. Before
making a purchase, the purchasing department must ensure that it heeds the proper protocols for
purchase and budget approval and must ensure that any items are purchased in accordance with
the overall purchasing policy of the organization.

Production Department
Marhaba produce herbal food and medicine. M. Saleem and M. Islam controls the production in
marhaba laboratories in kotlakpat and sunder factory respectively.
The production department is responsible for converting inputs into outputs through the stages of
production processes. The Production Manager is responsible for making sure that raw materials
are provided and made into finished goods effectively. He or she must make sure that work is
carried out smoothly, and must supervise procedures for making work more efficient and more
enjoyable.
Following are the main duties of production department.

Quality of Goods
The production department's main duty is to ensure the goods being produced meet the
customer's quality expectations. Even though the quality assurance department inspects the
goods through the manufacturing process, the production department has certain quality duties
too. Each step measures the raw material to make sure it is within the tolerances recommended
before it goes to the next step. This measurement is either done digitally or by the machine or
production operator.

Production Scheduling
It is the duty of the production department to maintain a production schedule so other
departments know what is being produced and how long it takes to produce that quantity. The
sales department relies heavily on this production scheduling to provide customers with a
satisfactory time line of shipment for their purchases.

University of Central Punjab Page | 18

Coordinating Duties
This is the last step in a long production process. In all production process it is the duty of the
production manager to coordinate the duties of the employee so that production runs smoothly.

Research on Dengue
Dengue fever also known as break bone fever, is an infectious tropical disease caused by the
dengue virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic
skin rash that is similar to measles. In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the
life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets
and blood plasma leakage, orinto dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood
pressure occurs. Dengue is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the genus Aedes,
principally A. aegypti. The virus has four different types; infection with one type usually gives
lifelong immunity to that type, butonly short-term immunity to the others. Subsequent infection
with a different type increases the risk of severe complications. As there is no vaccine,
prevention is sought by reducing the habitat and the number of mosquitoes and limiting exposure
to bites. Treatment of acute dengue is supportive, using either oral or intravenous rehydration for
mild or moderate disease, and intravenous fluids and blood transfusion for more severe cases.
The incidence of dengue fever has increased dramatically since the 1960s, with around50–100
million people infected yearly. Early descriptions of the condition date from 1779, and its viral
cause and the transmission were elucidated in the early 20th century. Dengue has become a
global problem since the Second World War and is endemic in more than 110 countries. Apart
from eliminating the mosquitoes, work is ongoing on a vaccine, as well as medication targeted
directly at the virus.

Research on Asthma
Asthma is the common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable
and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstruction, and bronchospasm. Symptoms include
wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma is clinically classified
according to the frequency of symptoms, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and peak
expiratory flow rate. Asthma may also be classified as atopic (extrinsic) or non-atopic (intrinsic).
It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Treatment of
acute symptoms is usually with an inhaled short-acting beta-2 agonist (such as salbutamol).
Symptoms can be prevented by avoiding triggers, such as allergens and irritants, and by inhaling
corticosteroids. Leukotriene antagonists are less effective than corticosteroids and thus less
preferred. Its diagnosis is usually made based on the pattern of symptoms and/orresponse to
therapy over time. The prevalence of asthma has increased significantly since the 1970s. As of
2010, 300 million people were affected worldwide. In 2009 asthma caused 250,000 deaths
globally. Despite this, with proper control of asthma with step down therapy, prognosis is
generally good.

CONCLUISON
Marhaba Laboratories is one of the main herbal product producers in Pakistan. They have
centralized system of command and control, for the betterment of the system they have to give
authority to lower or middle managers.

In this dynamic environment where system and firms situations are changing day by day the key
of success is technology. Marhaba needs to adapt new technology so that they can compete with
their competitors. For this purpose they are going to introduce SAP in their factory which is a
good and healthy sign.

They need to make a separate HR department, because HR department is the backbone of any
organization. For the betterment of the work force and better implementation of the policies they
need to work on this department.

It goes without saying that human resources are the most important in the organization; It
integrates all the activities and functions of the bank like job analysis, recruitment, staffing,
training, designing compensation package, employee appraisal system.

The overall analysis indicates that CEO Muhammad Usman work very hard to make Marhaba
one of the renown name in herbal industry. Now it is the time when he should empower his
employees to increase market share.

To sum my report I would say that Marhaba is a good and healthy place to work in.
