“SriVenkataarya thanayan
thath paadha kamalaashrayam
Vaadhoolaarnava poornendhu
Raamanuja Gurum Baje.”
‘Amalanadhipiran’

the nectarine outpour
of Thiruppan Azhwar ..
Meaning of Thaniyan:
THANIYAN 1:

Let my wicked mind surrender unto one of the

dearest Azhwars of the Lord Arangan, who,
having seen SrimanNarayanan, feet upwards , in
splendor galore ,swore that his eyes shall never
move away from His lotus feet and behold
anything or anyone else. Let my tongue always
sing the ten paasurams,
THANIYAN 2: sung by the Azhwar out
Perched
of on the shoulders of Loka Saaranga
ecstasy.
Muni, entering the sanctum sanctorum of Lord
SriRanganatha at Bhooloka Vaikuntam,and
seeing the lord as described by the muni from
lotus feet, the garments, naval, the huge waist
belt, broad chest, neck, crimson mouth and
lotus eyes, PanPerumal,revelled in the
Song1:
Amalanadhipiran…..
Okkindrahe.
He , the pure one, the
cause of the universe the
lord of the ever free
angels, who is standing on
the Thirumala hills,
waiting to give shelter to
those who surrender unto
Him, the lord of Nitya
Vibuthi and Leela
Vibhuthi, who is reclining
on the serpent conch in
the high walled city of
Srirangam, let the Lotus
feet of that Arangan,
Song2:
Uvanda vullathanaai…..ena sindhanaye.
The one who incarnated as Thirivikrama , the
one who slew single-handed the Rakshasa
hordes , in an amazingly short period, and the
one who is dressed in the yellow grab, let my
mind always meditate on that Supreme
Personality, Lord SriRanganatha . May He shoot
His fierce arrows into my ten senses, which are
like the ten heads of Ravana.
Song 3:
“Mandhipaai…adiyen vullathin uyire
The one who is worshipped by
Nithyasooris in the sacred hills of
Thirumala, which is full of trees housing
many monkeys, that jump from one tree
to another, and play on the branches, the
one reclining on the Sesha Paryankam(
serpent conch) in Srirangam,let my
wicked mind always abide in the yellow
robe (peethaambaram) worn by Him,
from where the Four faced Brahma ,
sprang from the lotus like navel.
Song 4:
Sadhurama…. ulaaginradhey
Saunters my mind along the belly-band my
sire at Arangam, where the Dragon flies
buzz , and the peacocks dance. The three
folds in His belly are considered to be the
three categories of His subject
‘Nithyaas’; ‘Mukthaas’ and ‘Badhhaas’,
which signifies that He is the sovereign
master of the entire cosmos. These marks
also signify the scar occurred due to the
tying of a rope by Mother Yashoda in
Krishnavatharam( Damodaran). Let my
mind always dwell on the lotus feet of
Him, who killed the ten- headed monarch
of Lanka, which is an impregnable city with
tall square walls around, apart from the
Song 5:
“Paaramaaya…. Adiyenai aatkondadhe”
Rooting out my age long sins, dark and
dense , without doing any penance or
austerities, made me His devotee and
entered into my heart . Let my tongue
always sing the praise of the glory of
that broad heart of SriRanganatha,
which has Mother Ranganayaki in it. He
is Srinivasan. His concert protects all
the devotees by acting as a
purushaakaaram. That bejwelled chest
of my sire has attracted me towards
Him.
Song 6:
“Thunda ven……adiyenai uyyakondadhe”
He, the one who removed the sin of
Shiva, who committed the sin of cutting
the head of Brahma, and the one, who is
resting in the city of Arangam, the
throat of that Azhagiya Manavaalan ,
which consumed the cosmos, it’s rulers
and all other demi-gods, has indeed
mesmerized and attracted me towards
Song 7:
“Kaiyanaar….
Kavarndhadhuve.

My mind has been whisked

by the coral lips of the Lord
of Arangam, who reclines on
the serpent conch with
fragrant Tulasi wreath,
bedecked from the crown
He wears, and holding the
conch and the fire-spitting
discus with His beautiful
hands. The lips are so
charming, that they are
beyond the description of
lotus!!The lord’s bewitching
Song 8:
“Pariyanaaghi…. Pedhamai seidhanavae”

The one who tore the body of

Hiranyakashapu, who was torturing His
devotee Prahalada,the one cannot be
understood even by Brahma and other
celestials, the one who is the cause of the
cosmos, that
ears, has Lord
made meSriRanganatha, with
bewitching
intoxicatedlarge eyes, extending near the
and has
drawn me towards Him.
The voluntary projection
of the lord’s white
eyeballs, with red
streaks stretching along,
the black pupil with a
seductive lusture and the
Song 9:
“Aala maamarathin… en
nenjinaye”
The little boy who lay on the
banyan leaf, after swallowing
the seven worlds holding
them in His stomach during
the great deluge, that
SriRanganatha’s endless
charm of pear less chains
with sparkling pearls and
rubies, and His blue lily like
body has thrown me into
awful disarray , distraught!!!
Song 10:
Kondal vannanai…
kaanave.
By taking birth among
the shepherds, and
going one step ahead
of the rain clouds,
which just rain and
drift away, the Lord
comes down and
mingles freely with
all and sundries, high
and low in hall and
hamlet.None else
shall the eyes look at,
having the cloud
hued, shepherd born,
“Mukhe mandha haasam nakhe
chandhra baasam
Kare chaaru chakram
suresaapivandhyam
Bhujangha sayanam bhaje
ranganatham
Harer anya daivam namanye
namanye…..”
