COLOMBIAN TECHNICAL STANDARD NTC (by its acronyms in Spanish) 3538 FIRST

UPDATING
NORMA TECNICA COLOMBIANA

MECHANICAL DEVICES.

MANUALLY OPERATED GAS METALLIC VALVES FOR USE IN PIPING GAS HAVING
WORKING GAGE PRESSURE FROM 6.8kPa (1psi) to 861 kPa (125 psi). SIZES FROM 6,35
mm (1/4 inch) TO 80,8 MM (2 inches).

1. APPLICATION AREA

1.1. This standard should only be apply to manually operate metal valves, with an
inside nominal diameter between 6.35 mm (1/4 inches) and 50.8 mm (2 inches) that are
suitable for controlling gas flow and are designated to operate at a pressure nominal of
service (manometric) between 6,8 kPa (1psi) and 861,8 kPa. These valves can be installed
in piping systems designed and operated at manometric pressures that do not exceed the
nominal pressure of service designated for the valve in environments with temperatures
between -10 ℃ ± 5 ℃ (14 °F ± 9 °F) and 65 ℃ ± 5 ℃ (150 °F ± 9 °F), as set out by NTC
3728 (Colombian technical standard).

1.2. This standard establishes the minimum capacities, properties and characteristics
that the valves must have at the time of manufacturing, so that they are considered
suitable for use in gas distribution and supply pipelines, the design and manufacturing
details, which are not considered in this standard, including factory tests and trials, even
factory tests and trials, that are necessary to achieve the reliable production of valves that
meet the characteristics required by this standard are the sole responsibility of the
manufacturer.

They are excluded from the scope of this standard. The passage valves are installed at the
inlet of the appliances to shut off the gas flow, which are covered by NTC 3740.

1.3 STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS

The standards and specifications referenced in this standard, and the names of the
institutions promulgating it, are listed in Annex A. At the time of promulgation of this
standard the versions set forth therein were valid. The functional characteristics required
by this standard, in accordance with the standard and the specifications referred here.
These are considered fit for the purposes planned. The editions and revisions of the
referenced standards and specifications are replaced or updated in subsequent revisions.

2.5 LABELED

2.5.1 GENERAL

Valves have to be marked with the following information:

2.5.1.1 The name of the manufacturer or its commercial identification (logo).

2.5.1.2 Nominal operating pressure, the nominal gauge pressure for which the valve is
designed and manufactured, it must correspond to the maximum permissible working
pressure at which the valve meets all the requirements of the standard.

2.5.1.3 Valves designed and constructed to not be operate it by unauthorized personnel,

the designation 'I' should be included where the valves are designed to not be operate it
by unauthorized personnel. These special features cannot be easily identifiable without
being disassembled. The label must be made on the same material as the valves.

2.6 LUBRICATION (SEALANT)

The valves requiring pressure lubrication (by injecting lubricant through fittings on the
sealing surface of the valves), have to be able to be lubricated while they are under
nominal operating pressure of service, which was designated. This requirement is satisfied
if the valves can be lubricated with the valves in the fully opened or fully closed position.
The design of the valves must be such that lubrication operations are carried out
according to the manufacturer's specific instructions. It minimizes the possibility of the
lubricant passing into the gas stream.

3. DESIGN QUALIFICATION

3.1 GENERAL

3.1.1 Each basic design of the valves manufactured to meet this standard must be
qualified and demonstrated to be suitable for the intended service by carrying out tests on
samples selected randomly by batches representative of the manufacturer's production.
These samples must be made for each size produced (nominal internal diameter), type of
mechanisms used and class of materials used for the manufacture of the valve elements
COLOMBIAN TECHNICAL STANDARD NTC (by its acronyms in Spanish) 3538 FIRST
UPDATING
NORMA TECNICA COLOMBIANA
that contribute to resist pressure, in according to the established design qualification
tests. The basis for acceptance of each sample, in proportion to the size of the production
lot under consideration, is specified in the standards of the series NTC -ISO 2859.

Once this has been done, the valve must be left to stand until it reaches a metal
temperature of 23 ℃ ± 8 ℃ (74 °F ± 15 °F), and must successfully pass the test described
in the numeral 3.2.

3.4 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

3.4.1 RESISTANCE

Valves are selected in accordance with the sampling plan set forth in Chart 7, in the open
position and with the outlet end properly plugged. It must resist an internal hydrostatic
pressure (manometric) of at least 2 ,930 kPa (425 psig). The valve shall be maintained for
no less than one minute without any permanent breakage or deformation. Once the
pressure has been relieved, it will make the valve unsuitable for its intended purpose.

3.4.2 TORCION

The bodies of the valves are selected according to the sampling plan set out in Chart 7,
tested in both the open and closed positions. It must be able to withstand the torques
specified in Chart 1 directly at their coupling ends, without being followed by
deformations or ruptures. Once the torque has been relieved, it appears if the valve is not
suitable for the purposes provided in this standard. It demonstrates that it cannot provide
an effective shut-off of the gas flow or that it leaks when subjected to the test provided
for in numeral 3.2.

(1) The valves with different nominal inlet and outlet diameters are catalogued according
to the torque corresponding to the smallest of these diameters.

(2) 8, 85 lb-Inch = 1 N-m

Where:

A= yoke for the application of the load

B= Ensure solid steel bars of equivalent diameter to the pipe corresponding to the
valve under testing are firmly connected to the valve to shape the sample under
testing. If the valve ends are threaded, the rods must be threaded in accordance
with the NPT specifications of ANSI B2.1, properly lubricated and tightened with a
torque equivalent to 50% of the torques specified in Chart 1.

C= resistance yoke or load receptor.

G= valve to be tested

L= load on the valve (N or lbf).

S= 610 mm (24 inches) of light between the load receiving points.

Y= 12 inches (305 mm) of light between the load application points.

Equation for Md, bending moment in pounds-force per inch, lbf-inch

Md = L(S - Y)

3.4.4 Tensile Strength

The valve selected in accordance with the sampling plan set out in chart 7 must withstand
both in the open and closed positions. The tensile or tensile loads specified in chart 3
applied gradually to the coupling ends without any deformation or breakage once
removed that would render them unfit for the purposes specified in this standard
incapable of effectively cutting off gas flows or that could cause leakage when subjected
to the test described in item 3.2

3.4.5 DRIVE TORQUE

The torque required to maintaining the valve in constant operating condition after
overcoming the resistance to the tightening shown in the factory calibration or stationary
position must not exceed the values set forth in Chart 4. (See Chart 7).

At the completion of this test, all valves must be capable of meeting the requirements of
paragraph 3.2.

When valuing production by the sampling system, samples should be selected according
to the procedure laid out by NTC-ISO 2859 series. Sample sizes and basis for acceptance
should be as set out in Chart 5.

For sample sizes larger than 5 valves, the sample size is taken from the NTC-ISO 2859
series tables. This value is divided by five and the entire part is taken to obtain the valve
assemblies to be tested according to Chart 7.

The remaining valves shall only be tested for leaks.
