Medium Voltage Drives Top 10

Top Ten Reasons to Buy a MV 1000 MV Drive

Listed below are only a few of the reasons Yaskawa beats the competition on drive
performance:

1. NO SIGNIFICANT POWER LINE HARMONICS - The Electric utility grid operates most
efficiently if the connected loads do not distort or shift the current waveform. Unfortunately
when AC power is converted to DC from rectification, the current is distorted, contains high
frequencies, and has the appearance of low power factor due to the harmonic content. Most
AC drives convert power to DC as the first part of the conversion process to variable voltage
and frequency. High distortion can cause many problems and create issues with other loads
connected to the same grid. Many methods of mitigation for these harmonic issues are
application sensitive. Yaskawa’s MV1000 has one of the lowest harmonic footprints in the
industry and is application insensitive.

2. HIGHEST QUALITY OUTPUT WAVEFORM - Yaskawa’s General Purpose 4kV MV 1000 drive
has capability to be applied to standard industrial medium voltage motors designed for
power line operation. Yaskawa’s six power conversion cells for a three phase output give as
good a waveform as twelve cells from the competition’s designs.

3. 200,000 HOUR MTBF – Nobody believes a manufacturer will design a product based on that
high a MTBF number and still be competitively priced. Yaskawa meets that challenge.

4. HIGH STANDARD EFFICIENCY – The MV1000 has one of the highest guaranteed efficiency
numbers in the industry at 97% conversion efficiency including the transformer. Equivalent
designs from the competition are 96% to 96.5%.

5. EASE of USE - Yaskawa’s MV1000 drive has made a game changer in the MV market. At last,
a MV drive is available that is easy to program and commission. It programs and runs like
the popular low voltage A1000 workhorse. It even uses the same option boards for
communication such as Ethernet IP™, ProfiBus™ and others.

6. HIGH RELIABILITY – An installed base of more than 2000 units since 1996 and an award
winning QC program for quality has the drive with availability and uptime numbers greater
than 99.97%. Yaskawa is the only drive company to win the coveted Deming Award in Japan
for an outstanding QC program.

Yaskawa was awarded the prestigious Deming prize in 1984

7. SYNCHRONOUS TRANSFER – When a motor’s inrush current needs to be reduced to prevent

power line flicker, the MV1000 is the most capable in the industry. Every MV1000 drive has
software capability to transfer a motor with closed transition to the power grid and back. No
third party line synchronization equipment is required. Multiple motors of different sizes can be
started and transferred with a single drive and properly installed with switching contactors.

8. ADVANCED POWER DEVICES AND COOLING – The MV 1000 is air cooled to ratings up to 11,000
HP at 4kV and can operate at full capacity with the input filters blocked by 50%. Every IGBT
junction temperature is monitored internally as well as the transformer temperature and all can
be displayed on the drive keypad. Warnings can be programmed that notify the client the drive
is in a potential over temperature condition in advance of the drive shutting down.

9. ADVANCED FAN CONTROL - The MV1000 uses high quality brushless DC fans with additional
capacity. They cannot run backwards due to phase rotation and will send a signal back to the
drive control they are running. Loss of a single fan means the drive can still run at full capacity.
An alarm is generated that fan maintenance is required which can be a scheduled shutdown.

10. REMOTE MONITORING CAPABILITY – Have an Ethernet connection or secure company network
near your drive? Yaskawa offers free software that can access your drive remotely for status,
trending and troubleshooting using the Ethernet IP option communication card.
