AR 2 Homework Instructions

Please read them carefully, use your valuable time as efficiently as possible!

Ch. 1 and 2, exercises pg. 17-20, syllabus, FAQ/Reserves

1. Buy all your required books asap and bring them to class next week:
- Arranging 2 book (Freedman/Pease)
- Music Notation, McGrain (you should already have this)
- Music Notation, Score and Part Preparation, Nicholl/Grudzinski)

2. Go over chapter 1 and read chapter 2 carefully, highlighting the key

quirks the horns have
- Look at your abridged range chart on page 16 of the Arranging 2 book and
CIRCLE the abridged range chart in each horn range, (pg. 4, 7, 10, 12 and 14). These
are the ranges we will work with this semester (most of the time) Think of the abridged
ranges as a SAFE ranges.

- Listen to horn examples through the Berklee Library class reserves link, I've attached
the FAQ/reserves page and the syllabus to this email.
Make sure to go over the syllabus, pay special attention to the highlighted policies
regarding attendance and homework.

3. Proceed to the chapter 2 hwk

A: pg. 17/18, compare with the range chart for each instrument and see whether or not
there are issues regarding:
- range
- dynamics
- tempo
- slide position issues, trombone (I position to VII position)
- leaps to be avoided (remember that certain articulations shorten a note which will
allow a leap to be played more conveniently)

B: pg. 19: Change octaves ONLY IF NECESSARY, in other words:

Keep the melody as high as the abridged range chart allows it. Keep it
in concert, make sure the concert clefs are correct (treble clef for upper three, bass clef
for lower two horns), do all this according to the range charts in chapter 2!
This should be an easy exercise (DO NOT write 8vb, 8va etc.)

1
C: Write the appropriate range area numbers into B

D: pg. 20: TRANSPOSE!

KEEP the melody in the given octave for all horns. PRIME UNISON
(All horns are sounding at the exact same pitch!
The melody will be in the middle register for some horns and in the high register for
others. (Full range)
Treat this as the key of C major!
Go to each horn range chart before starting, compare the first pitch of the exercise
with the same concert pitch

Transpose the key signature too, make sure to have the proper clefs.

Tip: Double-check your work, if the note you're transposing has a flat or sharp in
concert then the transposed note will reflect that with a natural or accidental, every
single time. (Except open key signature situations)

1. Use a pencil for the exercise in the book

2. Put D it into finale/sibelius, portrait orientation, print it out and self-grade your
handwritten work with a red pen.
***Careful: Finale has started to “decide” in which octave a given melody appears,
Double-check and change if necessary. You might want to turn off this option for future
