BASIC CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING PFD

• Minimum 150N SOLAS approved PFD

• Retro-reflective tape that conforms to SOLAS
• SOLAS approved whistle
• Life jacket light; intensity 0.75 Cp (at least 8 hours); 50<scintillations>70

5
TYPES OF PFD
• Type I: Offshore Life Jacket
• Type II: Near-shore Life Vest
• Type III: Flotation Aid
• Type IV: Throwable Device
• Type V: Inflatable Life Jacket

6
Type I: OFFSHORE LIFE JACKET
• For rough and remote waters
• Provide prolonged buoyancy
• Extra flotation (minimum buoyancy force 22-25 lbs)
• Be able to turn unconscious person face up in the water
• For use when rescue may be a long time coming

7
Type II: NEAR-SHORE LIFE VEST
• Good for calm waters when quick assistance or rescue is likely
• Be able to turn unconscious person face up in the water
• Buoyancy is no so prolonged
• Provide buoyancy force around 15.5lbs
• Uncomfortable, so rarely worn

8
Type III: FLOTATION AID
• Mostly used for water sports such as water skiing
• Will not turn most unconscious persons face up
• Not recommended for rough water
• For calm waters only when quick assistance or rescue is likely

Applicable for Tangguh:

• WORK VEST ONLY (according to PPE Procedure 920-PRC-HS-2428)

10
Type IV: THROWABLE DEVICE
• Not designed to be worn
• Throw to someone in trouble
• Not for rough waters or for persons unable to hold on to it
Type V: INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS
• Used in maritime operations for embarking and disembarking on vessel
decks
• To be used for as type 2 or type 3
INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS
• Are available for type II and type III
• Type II automatically inflate when the wearer enters the water. Can
also be manually or orally inflated. Have some Type I characteristics
• Type III and V come in automatic or manually inflating models. Can
also be orally inflated
• REQUIRE CHECK and annual maintenance

ANNUAL INSPECTION
• Inflatable life jackets require inspection regardless of whether they have
been inflated or not.
• Failure to carry out annual inspection may cause inflatable life jacket to
malfunction!
• The annual inspections best carried out by accredited services stations,
or as an alternative YOU can perform a simplified inspection yourself

LIFE JACKETS
INFLATABLE – PRE WEAR CHECK
1. Check the CO2 Cylinder

Unscrew the CO2 cylinder anti clockwise

and make sure it is not pierced. Screw the
un-pierced CO2 cylinder back tightly by
hand clockwise.
A pierced CO2 cylinder is empty and must
be replaced
INFLATABLE – PRE WEAR CHECK
2. Check the Safety Indicators and cartridge

Automatic Version:
Check both safety indicators. If either of
the green indicators is missing and/or the
CO2 cylinder is pierced the life jacket must
be rearmed.

Manual Version:
Check the safety indicator. If it is missing,
the CO2 cylinder is empty and must be
replaced/
INFLATABLE – PRE WEAR CHECK
3. Check pull knob

Check that the manual inflation pull knob

is accessible when donned
INFLATABLE – ANNUAL SELF INSPECTION

STEP 1 – GENERAL INSPECTION

1.1. Check:
a) Life jacket cover has no wear or damage
b) Cover closures are serviceable
c) Straps have no visible damage
d) Correct operation of buckle

1.2. Open cover and check:

a) Retro-reflective tape is firmly attached and
not damaged
b) Lifting Becket has no visible damage
c) Whistle (blow to check operation)
d) Oral inflation tube has no visible damage
INFLATABLE – ANNUAL SELF INSPECTION

STEP 2 – INSPECTION OF LUNG

1. Open cover and inspect lung has no sign of

excessive abrasion or wear. Pay extra
attention to fold and area around inflation
systems
2. Inflate lung by using red oral tube. Leave
the inflated PFD 12hrs in a room with stable
temperature around 20oC. Check there is no
loss of pressure and no visible damage to
the lung

If the lung is damaged or the pressure falls, the

PFD must be replaced. Under no circumstances
must you attempt to repair the PFD.
INFLATABLE – ANNUAL SELF INSPECTION

STEP 3 – INSPECT OF MOUTH INFLATION TUBE AND ITS VALVE

1. Check mouth inflation tube and valve

operate correctly. Deflate the life jacket by
inverting the cap and placing the tab onto
the top of mouth inflation tube.
2. Press the cap gently to expel the air

3.3. When the PFD is fully deflated replace the

cap to normal position. Do not put anything
other than the inverted cap down the oral
inflation tube to deflate as foreign object
may damage the valve.

STEP 4 – INSPECTION OF CO2 CYLINDER

4.1. Remove the CO2 cylinder by

unscrewing it anti clockwise and
inspect thoroughly. It should be intact
with no rush and corrosion. Replace the
cylinder if the end cap has been
pierced.

4.2. Check weigh the cylinder on a scales to

ensure that the weight of the cylinder
corresponds to the min. gross weight
engraved on the cylinder
INFLATABLE – ANNUAL SELF INSPECTION

STEP 5 – EXAMINE OPERATION OF MANUAL VALVE

5.1. WITH THE CO2 CYLINDER REMOVED–

Pull the manual lanyard sharply to
ensure that the lever moves freely and
that the piercing cutter becomes proud
of CO2 sealing washer inside the
inflator body. If lever moves freely and
piercing cutter becomes proud, rearm
the valve by folding back the lever into
normal position

5.2. Secure the green firing indicator clip

back into position.
IFTHE VALVE DOESN’T OPERATE
PROPERLY, THE PFD MUST BE
REPLACED
INFLATABLE – ANNUAL SELF INSPECTION

STEP 6 – INSPECTION & REARMING OF AUTOMATIC VALVE

1. Unscrew the cartridge anti clockwise

2. Check that the cartridge is clean and completely dry
3. Check the expiry date and check that the green
indicator is in place
INFLATABLE – ANNUAL SELF INSPECTION

STEP 7 – REFITTING THE CO2 CYLINDER

7.1. Hold the unit firmly and screw the CO2 cylinder
clockwise into top of the inflator head. Hand tighten
until firm.
DO NOT USE ANYTOOLS OR UNDUE FORCE

STEP 8 – REPACK PFD

8.1. Repack the PFD, make sure the manual pull lanyard
is not tangled and that the lanyard knob is hanging
outside the PFD cover.
