Why I Chose Electronics Engineering

I chose Electronics Engineering as my course for college. Like other students, I have several
answers for this. This is because of three major reasons - my interests, curiosity, and some
suggestions. Let's begin with my interests, a major influence for me in finding the ideal course.

As a Generation X student, my interests are playing the piano, surfing the web, and making videos
(I'm a 'low-key' YouTuber) - all of these involving electronics. Aside from these, I also have a keen
eye for the latest electronic gadgets out there such as smartphones, laptops, and gaming
consoles. Back then I wanted to invent something like these gadgets by becoming an engineer,
just like my parents. The problem I had was which type or field of engineering I should choose
from, but I started to look beyond and explore the possibilities.

As part of my hobby, I am curious about how television channels operate through their
transmissions, especially during times when they show the SMPTE Color Bars during the late-
night hours. While watching the 'sign-on and sign-off' notices of ABS-CBN, I saw the names of
personnel licensed to work with the broadcasting, some of them having the 'ECE Permit number'
displayed on-screen. This was interesting, as being an ECE sounds cool, right? It feels great to
work there and have your name shown on TV, as part of the hard work being made. At that time
I didn't realize that it would be the course that I would choose for my college life.

During the last month of our school year (as part of our clearance in Grade 11), we were asked
to pick our ideal course for college. I couldn't make up my mind yet, as I was still choosing
between courses like Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Civil Engineering. I
messaged my cousin, also studying in UP, to suggest a course I could fit in well. She then told
me that Electronics Engineering would be ideal for me. After a few days of thinking and finalizing
the course, I chose ECE, my first choice for all the college entrance tests that I took.

Through my interests, curiosity, and suggestions, I was able to choose a course. I hope that the
subjects that I'll take within the BS ECE course will be able to guide me in my four-year journey
within UP.
