SPEECOM C37 Dr. Jennifer Tan-De Ramos

Self-Critique

Last Tuesday, June 13, 2018, we were tasked to deliver a persuasive essay to persuade

people to watch a movie. It was a speech that should be delivered by pairs, so me and my partner

chose the Disney movie The Lion King. In order to be able to successfully persuade the people to

watch the movie, we decided to highlight the achievements and awards of the movie to let our

audience know that there are professionals that recognize the movie as a great movie hence giving

them several awards. We also wanted to inform the audience that the movie is not only for children

because it is an animated film, but is also for adults because of its story. We prepare for our speech

by first making an outline then from the outline we created a script and decided that it will be better

if we did an alternating pattern. We practiced a couple of days before our speech and also in every

free time that we had. Before the presentation we ran through our lines and told each other to stay

calm and deliver the speech.

I think that there are several strengths in our speech. First, we delivered the speech the way

we wanted to deliver it, it may not have been perfect but we were still able to deliver the message

we wanted to give to the audience. Second, is that we had loud voices and we spoke clearly and

we think that everyone in the class was able to hear and understand our presentation. Lastly, the

points in our speech was clear and easy to understand and helped the audience to be enticed to

watch the movie.

Although we had strengths in our speech, we also had weaknesses that we can improve on

in the next speeches. One weakness that I realized that we did not use much hand gestures. By

using more hand gestures, it may help the audience focus more on us and make it more interesting

to watch and listen to since we did not just stand in front. In our future speech presentations, we

will surely try to learn how to use hand gestures properly in order to make the speech more

interesting. Another is that I stopped for a while when a couple of people laughed when I

mispronounced the name of Simba. When delivering a speech and I mispronounce a word in the

future I will just keep on delivering the speech in order to have a smoother speech. Lastly is that

we lacked practice. Even if we practiced together, I think we still crammed our speech resulting in

a not so smooth delivery of the speech. In our future speeches, we should practice and finalize our

speeches at least a week or two before the delivery of our presentation.

All in all, I think that our speech went well but it was not perfect. We have to improve in

some aspects of our speech like the use of hand gestures and having sufficient practice time. We

must on these in order to deliver a smoother and better speech in the future. In our future speeches,

we should be able to use hand gestures more and not just stand in front and look at the audience

while delivering the speech. We should also be able to deliver the speech without stopping when

distracted by the audience. I think in the end our speech still went well but there are a lot of areas

to improve on in delivering our future speeches.
