tidy. This will help save time and prevent accidents.
2.
When you have finished using tools, they must be
put away and kept in the proper place

Ensure easy access to all emergency equipment

e.g. fire extinguishers, first aid kits, chemical spill kits,
emergency shower and eye washes, should free from
obstruction.

7. Always ask for your teacher’s advice before using a

machine for the first time. You must listen to the teacher
when he tells you how to use them safely.

Types of Industries and their functions

What is an Industry?
An industry is the sector (part) of an economy made
up of manufacturing and construction enterprises and
economic activities concerned with the processing of raw
materials into manufactured goods.

What is the Construction Industry?

The construction industry is a sub-industry engaged in
alteration, repairing of structures and construction of
buildings.

What is the Manufacturing Industry?

The branch of the construction industry that deals with the
processing of raw materials into processed goods.

What is the Electrical and Electronic

Industry?
This sector is a sub-sector of the manufacturing industry,
which deals with the use of electricity to produce materials and
electronic devices.
7.

The Branches of the Construction Sector

Residential
The business of constructing houses or buildings
designed for people to dwell in for the benefit of one.
Residential construction practices, technologies and
resources must confirm to local building authority
regulations and codes of practice.

Industrial
The Industrial Sector includes the construction of
building, including facilities and equipment used mainly
for the production of materials and products

Commercial
The business of constructing buildings concerned with
or engaged in the buying and selling of goods and
services for a profit.

Civic
The construction of works of general interest for
public or private use, including facilities, equipment and
buildings notably construction of roads, sewers, bridges,
dams etc...
8.
Roles in the construction sector

Engineering Design

The process of creating, altering and Developing

conceptual and detailed designs of an object such as a
structure, device, furnishing or fitting through the use of
technology.

Industrial Production
Developing and processing of product or material
progressively in large quantities on a continuous run.

Industrial Maintenance
This job involves regular inspections to identify
faulty equipment, building, structure, system or technical
installation, Test new equipment before use, caring of
devices, keeping of records of maintenance and activities
for durability and longevity in use of equipment.
Organisational Structure of the Construction and
Manufacturing Industries
Owner
These are the people (or groups) that are the legal and
direct beneficiaries of a project or service. They are the
people for whom the project is being undertaken. In
general the owner is initially responsible for all of the
project risks, as it is usually the owner(s) decision to
execute the project or not.
Consultants
The consultant is an individual whose job is to
represent the client in his/her absence or presence, and
ensures that the project goes according to plan.
What they do
They represent the project owner(s) by lending
practical expertise to the job by assisting in planning,
estimating total project costs and setting up a sound
construction budget. The construction consultant reads
and understands blueprint, has strong speaking skill, to
explain technical information to the client (owners),In a
understandable manner and team work skills to
effectively work jointly with contractors and other
personnel involved in the project.

Architect
Architects are licensed professionals trained in the art
and science of building designs, developing the concepts
for structures and turning those concepts into images and
plans.
What they do
Architects create the overall look (beauty) of
buildings and other structures, but the building is
designed with considerations of being functional, safe,
and economical and must suit the needs of the people who
use them. Architects have to design building so that
people can escape from the building in an emergency. The
plans also specify the building materials and the interior
furnishings.
General Contractor
The general contractor (tradesman)is a manager,
employed by the client on the advice of the architect,
engineer or the client him/herself.
What they do
He oversees the project on-site and tracks the
workers attendance and completion of tasks on schedule;
His number one priority is safety on the job site He is also
in charge of personnel including timecards, payroll, and
often hiring or promotion. The general contractor hires
specialized subcontractors to perform all or portions of
the construction work.

Subcontractor
An individual that sign a contract perform part of the
work for a company or individual as part of a larger
project.
First-tier Subcontractor
A person hired by the Subcontractor to perform
specific tasks on the client’s project. The First-tier
subcontractor receives his payment from the
Subcontractor.
Second-tier Subcontractor
An individual hired by the First-tier subcontractor to
assist him to perform specific tasks. The Second-tier
subcontractor is paid by the first-tier subcontractor
Third-tier Subcontractor
This is an individual hired by the second-tier
subcontractor, to perform tasks that were unable to be
completed because of a lack of ability or a tight deadline.
The Third-tier subcontractor is paid by the second-tier
subcontractor.
Material Supplier
An individual responsible for the planning and
buying of building materials, products and services. The
construction expeditor manages the flow of materials
from supplier to project. They must be able to determine
what materials and equipment will be needed in any given
project, order those materials, and manage timely
delivery. They work closely with both the suppliers and
the companies, which entails constant communication
between parties.
Roles of people in an organization with relatively
few levels in its hierarchy

Owner-The individual, who legally own the project, also

he/she pays all contracts, subcontractors etc.
