CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The goal of senior high school reform is to ensure that all students are

college and career ready. It serves as a pathway to college and career readiness.

Students have big goals in their journey of education such as to graduate high

school with high grades, go to their dream career, travel around the world or even

save enough money to buy new gadget. These goal-setting fuels the student’s

ambitions and keep them motivated and focused on achieving the things they want

to achieve but it can still take some time before the students can actually start

taking into actions that’s why our government implemented the K-12 program. It

aims to instill to students the skills to become entrepreneurs, provide students with

a world class educational experience and opportunities for intellectual, physical,

creative and social development. Moreover, the addition of two more years or two

more grade levels (Grade 11 and 12) will better equip learners with the necessary

skills, knowledge, and values needed for a successful future in the fields of

employment. Also, another purpose of this is to make the senior high school

students to be ready on their career direction. Furthermore, it

Conceptual/Theoretical Framework
According to the former president of the Philippines, Ninoy Aquino, “The K-

12 program will pave the way for an ever-brighter future for young Filipinos by

equipping the with basic education up to international standards.”

Respondents Sampling Procedure

The respondents of this research are the grade 12 students from the

different strands at King’s college of the Philippines Laboratory High School –

Bambang Campus. In getting the sample of respondents needed for this research,

Hamilton’s formula was being applied wherein to get the standard deviation(d), the

total population of the grade 12 students which is a total of 276 is divided by the

total population per group/strand. Moreover, to get the quota(q) per strand, the

total population per group/strand was being divided into the standard deviation(d)

Research Instrument

The instrument used was a researcher – made questionnaire to gather the

needed data from the respondents or participants. Survey using the questionnaires

were conducted by the researchers and has been utilized to determine the

problems encountered by the students in choosing their own career as well as their

level of career readiness. It contained three main parts such as the profile of the

respondent, their expected career and their level of career readiness. Part I was

used to elicit the respondent’s profile such as the name, address and gender. Part

II is the expected career which contains three choices that will reveal their chosen

career such as whether they will enter college to pursue their career,
entrepreneurship, or they will seek employment after graduating senior high

school. Part III is intended for the level of readiness of the grade 12 students. In

addition, the instrument was validated by our subject teacher and as well as by the

school principal.

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step before conducting a survey was to make a request letter to

the principal asking for a permission to conduct a survey as well as to the

respondents. Upon approval, the researcher retrieves the request letter.

Thereafter, the researchers coordinated with the students’ respective advisers for

the administration of the questionnaires to the grade 12 students during the

designated day and time. We used a researcher-made questionnaire. Before the

administration of the questionnaire, the researcher briefed the respondents on how

to accomplish the questionnaire. The respondents were given enough time to

answer the questions from the questionnaire. The researcher retrieved the

questionnaires immediately after they were accomplished. In administering the

questionnaire, the researcher used the time allotted for vacant times to avoid

distraction of class discussion.

Statistical treatment of Data

The data were statistically analyzed as follows:

Frequency counts and percentage – these statistics were used to draw the

profile of the students relative to the

applicable variables such as age, sex

and strand.

Weighted mean and standard deviation – these were used to describe the

respondents’ level of career

readiness. The mean scores were

described based on the following

scale:

Level of Career Readiness

Level of career readiness Mean Ranges Descriptive

interpretation
Yes Ready
Not ready Not ready
Table 2.

Pearson r – This was used to determine the significant correlation between the

respondents’ profile variable and career readiness of the grade 12

students.

T – Annova or T – Test – used to describe the significant differences in the career

readiness of the grade 12 students when they are group

according to profile.
