Because pine is easy to all the parts except the dowel rod are birch, Poplar is another easy wood to shape and it accepts paint well. If you plan to paint th h multi-colored, istic markings, its best to do so before assembling the parts. More information ‘on painting is provided later in this article. BODY/FRAME To make the body A use close grained wood that’ fre from knots and othe Enlarge the squares in the drawing on p. 38 to make two paper templates — top profile and a side profile. Cut the body to sze, then trace the pattems onto the block, Cut out the notch for the front spoiler with afine tooth circularsaw blade or a band sa ‘Tum the block over and cut out the notch under the engine compartment. Nex rout out the cockpit cavity. I use a lespeed rotary tool Tool, with a router attachment to smooth the bottom. Locate the axle hole centers on both des of the body and draw a 3/4-in~ dia, circle (guidelines for tapering the axle housings) with a com pass. Next, with a 1/4-in, brad-point drill bit, bore the front axle hole from Den ere a SPOILER UPRIGHT, J ey SIDE, FRONT ENGINE AIR SCOOP ASSEMBLY, H both sides of the block for greater accu- racy. Bore the rear axle hole the same way, but with a 5/I6-n, bit. Cut a 1/4-in, dowel B and a 5/16.in. dowel C for the ales slightly longer than needed. Next, follow the template lines and band saw the side profile first, Tape the offeuts back onto the block so you can follow the top pattern. Turn the block topside up and band saw along the tem- plate lines, then you'll be ready for hand trimming. With a sharp knife, taper each axle housing down to the 3/4:n. circle previously marked around the axles. Sand emooth, and you should have a very pleasing contoured body. BODY PARTS Cut the front spoiler D and trim to fit in the notch, but slightly above the top of the body. Glue the spoiler in place and sand it flush with the top. Make the side air scoop blocks E and band saw the U-shaped air passages. Cut the angle on the leading edge of the scoop, then carefully saw to fit the con- tour of the body, Glue one scoop to each side of the body and sand. ‘38, WORKBENCH, November Decomber 1988, SIDE AIR SCOOF You'll need to make templates for the cockpit cover F with the cutout for the cockpit marked. The cutoutin the cover is longer than the cutout in the body to create the drivers seat. Make the cutout in the cockpit cover with a scroll saw, then band saw the sides and top to shape. Sand and fit to the body, but dont glue the cover on yet. ‘Make the steering wheel Gi from 1/16- in, stock and bore a'/16-in-dia, hole for the shaft G2. Glue the shaft in the wheel. Bore a 25-degree hole (approximate) at the base of the cockpit and glue the steer ing assembly in place, Now you can glue the cockpit cover in place. The engine air scoop assembly H, com- prised of the scoop H1, scoop base H2. and scoop passages H3, requires a bit more handwork than the other pieces. Cat the blocks for both the scoop and scoop base and make a top and side paper template. Tiace the patterns onto the workpiece Hi, then bore the 1/4-in.- dia. holes in both the scoop and the base for the scoop passages H3.
