6. Objectives:
On successful completion of this module, students are expected to
- Enhance such basic reading strategies as scanning, skimming, inferencing and familiarize with
various types of texts from academic, educationally-adapted to more authentic ones.
- Strengthen vocabulary skills such as understanding vocabulary in context through synonyms,
phrasal verbs, and examples.
- Reinforce academic skills including combining infographics and textual information,
paraphrasing, summarizing and synthesizing.
- Improve career skills and knowledge of using authentic language in work & social situations.
- Develop learner autonomy and self-studying.
7. Contents:
The syllabus will typically focus more on developing different strategies of reading about varied topics
from academic texts to more work & social-related ones. The students will learn how to enhance their
general and narrow reading throughout the course. They also will practice relating academic studying to
real-life learning through practical reading projects.

Students’ progress and achievement will be evaluated throughout the course using three instruments
below:

- Time allowed: 60 minutes, Week 10
- Format: 15 reading comprehension questions (with two 500-700-word
passages); 25 vocabulary & grammar questions (related to the contents
in “Vocabulary in Use” & “Advanced English Reading Skills and
Comprehension).
End-of- 20 Group poster presentation
course score - Time allowed: 15-20 mins (5 mins/presenter, including Q&A); Weeks
14-15.
40 End-of-course test
- Time allowed: 60 minutes
- Format: 3 standardized-test-based reading passages:
+ one passage about general topics
+ two passages about academic topics.
- Question types: Multiple choice questions; True / False / Not given;
Diagram / Sentence / Summary completion; Question –Answer;
Matching.
