Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes what kind of method was used upon conducting the study. Under
this method is the research design, research locale, sample of respondents, research instrument,
research ethics, and data analysis utilized to achieve the specified goals of the study.

Research Design

As defined by Bhat (2019), Research design is defined as a framework of methods and

techniques chosen by a researcher to combine various components of research in a reasonably
logical manner so that the research problem is efficiently handled.

The kind of qualitative study used a descriptive study to know the environmental issues
and environmental awareness with the aid of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics) and Non-STEM students in ZNNHS (Zamboanga del Norte National High
School). The researchers decided to use descriptive study as a way to get deeper information
about the awareness on environment. Along with being a descriptive study, the
phenomenological approach is then deeming suitable. Since the focus of the study is to inquire
about student’s awareness and views in regard to Environmental Problems and Issues.

Research Locale

For the safety of the respondents, the study was conducted inside the school premises of
Zamboanga del Norte National High School. Given that, all respondent are Senior High School
students.

Sample of Respondents

In this study, the population was comprised of 30 STEM students and 30 Non-STEM
students from Zamboanga del Norte National High School which were picked by random. The
researchers give survey-questionnaires to the respondents which are related to the said study. The
subjects of this certain study are the (1) STEM students (2) Non-STEM students.

Research Instrument
The researchers designed an outline of questions for the data gathering process to have
qualitative data. With the aid of standardized questionnaire in finding out the profile, analysis,
and awareness of the respondents about environmental issues of ZNNHS senior high students
during their free time. The survey instrument was developed initially in English, the “official”
language of instruction at the premises of school. The delivery of the surveys was accompanied
by an explanatory briefing for the senior high students and took approximately 5-10 minutes to
complete.

Research Ethics

The researchers assured the respondents that their answers were treated with full
confidentiality and used for academic purposes only. The researcher also promise that the data
analysis gathered will be inscribe the truth, will be done without bias and the personal
information given by the respondents will not affect to the comprehension.

Data Analysis

Gathering the data

Data collected during the survey questionnaires were taken by an explanatory briefing,
through this, the data will interpreted with no bias. All were then lift-up to create a concept,
knowledge and understanding regarding environmental awareness. Researchers compiled all the
data that were collected during survey via “checking the possible answer” in a tick box questions
as a technique to easily categorize the answers.

Categorizing the collected data by gender, age and academic-track

The researcher carefully categorized the data collected based on the given three factors.
After categorization, the researcher can now create a comprehension on the data collected.
(IBUTANG DRE ANG MGA QUESTION SA QUESTIONNAIRE DAYUN GIUNSA
PAGKUHA ANG RESULT).

Finally, the researchers organized the interpreted data and formulated findings to arrive
into conclusions. Doing this, they were able to make recommendations as the study progresses.
The researchers were able to know the awareness of STEM and Non-STEM students about the
environmental issues. Further discussions and explanations would be presented in the proceeding
chapter.
