1. The Tiger King -(KALKI)


“The Tiger king” is an interesting story written by “Kalki”. The hero of the story is the Maharaja of
Partibandhapuram. His name was Sir Jilani Jung Jung Bahadur. But he was famous as the tiger king.
When he was born, the chief astrologer predicted that his death would come from a 100th tiger. When
he grew up to 20, he started to kill the tigers. He became very happy when he killed the first tiger.
Within 10 years, he killed 70 tigers. But the tiger population became very low in his state. So, he became
anxious (worried) sad. He got an idea in his mind. He married a girl of a royal family of a state. There
were large numbers of tigers. He killed 99 tigers now he had to kill only 1 tiger. But the 100th tiger was
not found anywhere. The king got worried. He ordered to his Divan to arrange for one tiger. The Divan
brought a tiger from the people’s park in Madras. The tiger was very old and sickly. The king shoots the
tiger. But the bullet was missed. The king did not about it. Later, the king’s hunter killed the tiger.

After a few days, king’s son birthday came. The king gifted a wooden tiger playing with his son. A needle
injured in his right hand. The king died because of deadly infection. In this way, the 100th (wooden) tiger
to his revenge.

2. Indigo -(Louis Fischer)


“Louis Fischer” is the writer of this lesson. He describes how Mahatma Gandhi fought the welfare of the
poor peasants (farmers) of Champaran in Bihar. The peasants were very poor and illiterate (not
educated). They were exploited by the landlord system of British government.

Rajkumar Shukla was a poor peasant from Champaran. He was also a sharecropper. He was very upset
because of landlords system. So, he reached to Gandhi ji for solve this problem. He invited him to come
to Champaran. At that time, Gandhi ji was very busy. But he begged Gandhi ji to fix a date. Gandhi ji was
very impressed with Shukla determination. So, he agreed. Both boarded a train for Patna. From Patna,
Gandhi ji first went to Muzzafarpur. He stayed there for collect details about the condition of the
peasants in Champaran. He also contacted Prof. Kriplani and Prof. Malkali. He came to know that the
condition of farmers was very bad. Most of the land in Champaran was under in the British landlords.
Indian tenants (farmers) worked on the land. By an agreement, the farmers had to plants Indigo in 15%
of there land and they scarified there all crops as rent to the landlords. But later, Germany had
developed synthetic Indigo. So, the landlords demanded compensation for it. At the farmer became
angry. At that point, Gandhi ji arrived Champaran. He was welcomed in Champaran by a large crowed.
The British ordered Gandhi ji to leave Champaran. They gave also an summon to Gandhi ji. But Gandhi ji
not backward. In the end, the British govt. defeated. They agreed to return 25% of the compensation.
All the farmers thanked to Gandhi ji.

3. The rattrap -(Selma Lagerlof)


“The Rattrap” is an interesting story written by “Selma Lagerlof”. It is a message giving story. It tells up
that love and understanding can change the heart of a thief or criminal. There were four characters in
this story that is Paddler, Crofter, Ironmaster and his daughter named Edla Williamson.

The Peddler was a poor man. He went around selling rattraps. His life was very sad because his business
was not profitable. His earning was also very low. That was why he started begging and thieving. One
day, a thought came into his mind, the whole world just a big rattrap. One night, he was invited by a old
man Crofter. The old man Crofter served him shelter and food. But the Peddler Cheated with Crofter. He
stole 30 konor notes of Crofter and ran away. He chooses the forest path but he lost himself into it.
After sometimes, he reached near an iron mill. The ironmaster saw him. He mistook him his old friend.
He invited him to his house. But the peddler refused to go with him. Then, the ironmaster daughter
came to the mill and also requested the peddler to stay with them for Christmas Eve function. Peddler
agreed it. But when the ironmaster knew his real identity. He ordered to him to leave his house. But Edla
showed the real sympathy for him. She served food to him in Christmas Eve

In the end of story, Peddler changed completely man. He left a letter and Christmas gift for Edla.

4. Deep water -(William dauglus)


“The Deep Water” chapter that is taken from “Of Men and Mountains” written by William Dauglus. In
this lesson, “Deep Water” the narrator talks about his fear of water and after how he finally overcomes
it. From the beginning, the narrator had an aversion (dislike) to water. This started when he was just
four years. Once he was standing together in the surf (lahre). There a wave swept over them and
knocked down. He was buried in water. After few years, he was nine years old. He sits on the edge of
pool at Y.M.C.A place. Then, a big bully boy came there and fall the narrator into the pool. He was fully
afraid from water. Luckily, he was saved from drowing.

After sometimes, the narrator got an instructor. He went to pool. He practiced five days in a week. The
instructor put a belt round him and a rope attached to it. Then, he learnt how to rise his nose and
inhale. So, he had a unique experience and became a well swimmer. Then, the narrator said-All we have
to fear is fear itself.

5. MY MOTHER AT SIXTY SIX - (KAMLA DAS)


“My Mother at Sixty Six” is a peaceful poem written by “Kamla Das”. In this poem, the poet describes
her personal feelings. She is a sensitive poetess. Her mother is sixty-six years old. Once, she is driving
from her parent’s home to the Cochin airport. Her mother sitting beside her. She saw at her old mother.
Her face looks as pale and faded. It looks lifeless like a dead body. She thought her mother not live long.
After sometimes, she looks out of the car. She saw young trees, the children look very happy. She
reached at the airport. She again looked her mother. Her mother face seems Pale and faded. Then, she
Could only said-“see you soon, Amma”. Actually, she loved her mother so much.

6. THE ENEMY - (PEARL S. BUCK)


“The Enemy” is a helpful story written by “Pearl S. Buck”. In this story, there are four characters- Dr.
Sadao and his wife Hana, Tom (injured person).

Dr. Sadao was a famous surgeon. He went to America to study surgery and medicine. After sometimes,
his father died. He had sat upon himself as a surgeon. Dr. Sadao’s house was built on the Japanese coast.
Sadao had met Hana in America. They were married as the old Japanese way. Once, Dr. Sadao and his
wife Hana found something coming out of the mist (Dhundh). There was an American solider named
Tom. Sadao saw that a gun wound on the right side of Tom. He was bleeding. Hana saw him and cried.
They read the faint letters on his cap: “U.S.Navy”. The American was a prisoner of war. If he sheltered a
Whiteman in his house, he could be arrested. Dr. Sadao’s house was on the Japanese coast. Two
Japanese servants also lived the house. Dr. Sadao operated the Tom and Saved his life. He stayed there
for 8 days. In this way, a doctor did his duty very well.

7. should wizard hit the mommy

-(john updike)
In “Should Wizard Hit Mommy?” John Updike shows the worldview of a little child. Children’s loves
stories. In this story, a father (Jack) tells a story to his daughter (Jo). It is the story of a skunk named
Roger. He smells very badly. One day, he go to a big wise owl and tells the problem. The wise owl
advised him to go to the wizard. At last, he goes to a wizard whose changing his bad smell. Now he
smells like roses. He feels very happy. When he comes to his mother, she becomes angry. She goes to
the wizard. She hit him with an umbrella. She ordered him to change Roger’s smell.

But JO becomes very sad to hear this. She feels unjust. She thinks that the wizard should hit the mother
back.
