Six Sigma Fundamentals

1
Evolution of Six Sigma

1. Walter Shewhart first

sketched out the
control chart in 1924
2. Deming and Juran
helps Japanese
revolutionize their
quality and
competitiveness post
World War II in 1950s
3. Developed Just-In
Time concepts (TPS)
largely in 1960s and
1970s and particularly
in Toyota
4. TQM originated in
1950s and became
popular in 1980s.
5. Bill Smith coins Six –
Sigma at Motorola
6. ISO 9000 in 1987
7. Second generation of
Six Sigma – becomes
part of corporate plan
and march towards
Lean Six Sigma

Concept of Sigma and Sigma Levels

• The term “sigma” is used to designate the distribution or spread about the
mean (average) of any process or procedure.

• For a business or manufacturing process, the sigma Level is a metric that

indicates how well that process is performing. The higher the sigma Level,
the better. Sigma level measures the capability of the process to perform
defect-free work. A defect is anything that results in customer
dissatisfaction.

As defects the Sigma Level

3
Concept of DPMO

s Sigma is
another word
for standard
deviation.
Something we can calculate
and measure for any process.

s Level DPMO Percentage 3s to 6s improvement

2 308, 500 69.1
3 66,800 93.32
20,000 times reduction in errors
4 6,200 99.4
5 233 99.98
6 3.4 99.99966 A True Quantum Leap
