NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard ( Part 1 ) which is identical with IS0 4014 : 1988 ‘Hexagon head bolts -
Product grades A and B’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization ( IS0 ) was
adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Bolts, Nuts and
Fastener Accessories Sectional Committee ( LM 14 ) and approval of the Light Mechanical
Engineering Division Council.
The standard was originally published in 1960 and revised in 1967. Subsequent to the
publication of 1967 edition, many changes had been agreed upon at international level which
have been reflected in IS 1367 series of standards covering ‘Technical supply conditions for
threaded steel fasteners’. Accordingly, the standard was published in 5 parts covering hexagon
head bolts, hexagon head screws, hexagon nuts, hexagon thin nuts ( chamfered ) and hexagon
thin nuts ( unchamfered ).
The second revision of the standard was based on IS0 4014 : 1979 ‘Hexagon head bolts of
Produc: grades A and 6’ issued by ISO. This third revision has been made by the adoption of
latest version of IS0 4014 published in 1988 as Part 1. The renGning parts of the standard
from Part 2 to Part 5 have also been revised by adoption of corresponding latest version of
International Standards. The following major changes Ihave been made in this revision:
a) The range of sizes has been enlarged to cover sizes from M 1‘6 to M64;
b) The range of nominal lengths has been extended up to 500 mm;
c) Non-preferred sizes have been included in separate table in line with IS0 4014;
d) Stainless steel bolts with property classas A2-70 and A2-50 have been included; and
e) The use of property classes like 4.6, 4.8, 5.8, 6.8 and 9.8 are also permitted subject to
the agreement between the manufacturer and user.
ln the 1967 version of this standard, the width across fiats for M 10 and Ml 2 size fasteners was
soecified as 17 mm and 19 mm respectively. However, in the 1983 version this width across
fiats was brought in line with IS0 4014 : 1979 and specified as 16 n?n! and 18 mm respectively
for MiO and Ml2 size fasteners. Recognizing the fact that the new width across flat dimensions
could not be implemented immediately, the Explanatory Note to 1983 version of the standard
made a reference to this aspect. However, in the absence of specific coverage in the standard,
the new width across flat dimensions could not be implemented. Recognizing the difficulty of
immediate changeover to new width acr& flats, the Committee felt that definite time frame
may ba given to the manufacturers for changeover and accordingly, it has been decided that
width across flats as per 1967 version, that is, 17 mm and 19 mm for Ml 0 and 12 size fasteners
shall be permitted till 31 December 1994.
It is also understood that some manufacturers are already equipped and manufacturing as per
new width across flat dimensions and supplies as per ney specifications are encouraged. During
this period, the manufacture of fasteners as per old versions shzll be phased out and by
1 January 1995, it is expcctad that the entire fastener industry would have switched over to
new width dimensions across flats and no old width across flats shall be permitted.

In the adopted standard, certain terminology and conventions are not identical with those used
in Indian Standards; attention is specially drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear, referring to this standard, they
should be read as ‘Indian Standard’; and
b) Ccmma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards the current
practice is to use point ( ) as the decimal marker.

0 introduction

This international Standard is part of the complete IS0 product standard series on hexagon drive fasteners. The series comprises:

a) hexagon head bolts US0 4014, IS0 4015, IS0 4016 and IS0 8765);

bl hexagon head screws (IS0 4017, IS0 4018 and IS0 8676);

cl hexagon nuts IISO 4032, IS0 4033, IS0 4034, IS0 4035. IS0 4036, IS0 8673, IS0 8574 and IS0 86753;

dl hexagon flanged bolts (IS0 4162 and IS0 8102);

el hexagon flanged screws ; ”

f) hexagon flanged nuts (IS0 4161, IS0 7043 and IS0 7044);

g) s:rwxural bolting (IS0 4775, IS0 7411 to IS0 7414 and IS0 7417).

1 Scope and field of epplication

This International Standard gives specifications for hexagon head bolts with threads from Ml,6 up to and including M64, of product
grade A for threads Ml,6 to M24 and nominal lengths up to and including 10 d or 150 mm, whichever is shorter and product grade B
for threads over M24 or nominal lengths over 10 d or 150 mm, whichever is shorter.

if, in special cases, specifications other than those listed in this International Standard are required, t&q should b+ &&ed from
existing International Standards, for example IS0 261, IS0 868, IS0 89&l, IS0 966-Z. IS0 3506 and IS0 4759.1.

11 These will form the subjects of future InternatioMl Standards.
