Purpose

 To see the effect of air process on the candle burning

Did you know ?

Combustion is a reaction that releases heat energy. Hot fire causes fluid

to evaporate wax and then be mixed with oxygen resulting in the combustion

process.

Factors affecting Combustion

Heat + Air + Fuel => Burning

Air and fuel are heated combustion. Air containing oxygen material

required to burn the fuel. While fuel produces stylish. When the fuel is
atomized in the combustion chamber then fuel will be very easy to be lit and will

burn efficiently.

Tools and materials

Tools :

 Glass

 Plate

 Matches

 Candle

Materials :

 Water

Procedure

Experiment 1

1. Equipment and materials

2. Light a candle on a plate. Then cover with a glass candle
3. Observe and record what happens

Experiment 2

1. Equipment and materials

2. Light a candle on a plate
3. Give enough water on a plate
4. Cover the wax with glass
5. Observe and record what happens

Question

1. What did the candle need from the air in order to burn ?

2. Why did the water rise up inside the glass ?

3. If all of the oxygen in the glass joined up with the candle when it burn.
What proportion of oxygen is there in the air ?

4. Is air just oxygen, or is it made up of other gases as well ?

5. What is the effect of the glass that closes the candle on the flame ?
Conclusion

After conducting the experiment, it can be concluded that:

Observation Table

EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1 When the candle is closed with a

glass, it turns out the candle light
is getting dimmer and finally goes
out.

EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 2 As in experiment 1, the candle

slowly dims and then goes out. Then
the water outside the glass is
sucked into the glass and the
surface rises.

Question

1. What did the candle need from the air in order to burn ?
Answer : Oxygen. But when the candle burns oxygen decreases and result in
the longer the candle gets dimmer and goes out.

2. Why did the water rise up inside the glass ?

Answer : Because when the volume of oxygen runs out in the glass the
pressure will also be smaller. Make the water around the glass to be sucked
into the glass.

3. If all of the oxygen in the glass joined up with the candle when it burn.
What proportion of oxygen is there in the air ?
Answer : The oxygen when the combustion process occurs a little because
the combustion process produces carbon dioxide.

4. Is air just oxygen, or is it made up of other gases as well ?

Answer : No. Because during combustion, produces is carbon dioxide and
water vapor
5. What is the effect of the glass that closes the candle on the flame ?
Answer : When the candle is covered with a glass it turns out the candle
light is getting dimmer and goes out

Conclusion

After conducting the experiment, it can be concluded that:

The air affects the burning of the candle, seen from the extinguishing

of the fire in the glass. This is because when there is a combustion in a

glass, air development initially occurs, at the same time an increase in

water vapor in the air. The candle is covered with a glass which goes

out because it runs out of oxygen. The room is covered with limited

oxygen, the result of combustion Carbon dioxide collects in the glass,

so the candle goes out of oxygen. From both experiments and

observations can be seen the combustion process requires air and when

the air cools, the pressure shrinks.
