PRESS RELEASE
According to Electricity Development Goal up to 2030, the Royal Government of Cambodia
has planned to develop electricity sources includes generation of electricity from Hydropower, and other
sources includes Solar Power together with imported electricity from neighboring countries which has
launched for operation continuously based on planned. The increasing of investment both from inside
and outside the country due to political stability after National Election 2018, decreasing power rate
from January, very hot temperature and uncommon shortage of water have made the demand of using
electricity significantly increase over than expected. The shortage of water has made capacity of
generating electricity from the Hydropower has decreased, making it difficult to meet the electricity
demand nation-wide up to end of May as usual.
In order to settle this issue, EDC has communicated with neighboring countries to help increase
electricity supply more to Cambodia. As results, Thailand helps to increase the supply of 80MV more,
Laos increase 10MW more and Viet Nam help to keep existing supply amount stable even though
Southern part of Viet Nam is facing electricity shortage too. However, we still face with electricity
shortage of 13% and this is forcing EDC to implement schedules power cuts in electricity supply until
rainy season. The cut down of electricity will be at day time by alternating locations to keep the
supplying at night time as it is the necessity of people for using and at the same time also considered as
much as possible about using electricity from generators for day time to supply for industrial sector,
rice milling for exportation, hospitals, water supply, embassy and government institutions. In the hard
situation of 72 days up to end of May, public holidays and Sunday in total of 23 holidays, EDC will try
to maintain electricity supply as normal. If there is rain fall before end of May, the power supply will

group standby for serving 24/24 hours.
Moreover, EDC has studying other sources that could be available in urgent case by keeping
power rate not to increase and still could decrease power rate more in next year.
EDC would like to announce to the public to understand, apologize and help to save power
usage in order to optimize the difficulties we are facing in this transition period.
