CHAPTER 1
The Problem and it’s Background

Background of the Study

Allowance it refers to the money given to students that shall be used for their daily needs
and expenses; it is given by their parents or guardian. An allowance is money earned or given to
a child at regular intervals to teach the child how to manage money.

Money plays vital role in every person’s life. It is the medium used for exchange, unit of account
and store of value. It is used to buy goods and materials that are necessary in life. It can also
prevent the suffering that come with poverty and hunger, provide education and even power.
Money is the source of survival. Money is a fundamental and indispensable tool to live in
materialistic world. In fact all people in different fields have their own ways to spend and save
their money. Students on the other hand, learn to save their allowances as they grow and recent
different requirements in school as well as things they want to buy for their own. Budgeting is
one of the practical skills that come in useful for them. It helps them to attain a better
understanding of financial matters that would become handful in their future. The significance in
the discovery of how much a student from Philippine Christian University Senior High School
spends per week would let understand what kind of lifestyle majority has. Upon the information,
the researchers will be able to determine the same qualities of habits that each has and the traits
that will create the contrast between the Senior High course in PCU-UHSM-SHS. Allowance is
necessity for every student. It means of survival. It also can help students be financially
responsible. Being essential, it is just right to state that students shall be able to budget their
allowance appropriately. The problem is how to do it. Doing so isn’t easy since students need to
manage their weekly allowance between their needs and wants. Also some only have a limited
amount of money. Proper budgeting is important, if done responsibly, it can give both the
students, needs and wants.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers sought to determine on how Grade 11 students manages their weekly
allowance. Therefore, the following questions were formulated:

1.) As a student, is it important to manage your weekly allowance?

2.) Where do you mostly spend your weekly allowance?

3.) Do school works and school expenses affect your weekly allowance?

Significance of the study

The study deals with the weekly allowance of PCU grade 11 students. It seeks answers as
to how and where the respondents spend their money every day. Considering that money is an
essential commodity that helps a person to run his or her life, this study is significant for it will
benefit the students, the teachers, the administrators, the parents, the researchers, and the future
researchers.

The Students. This study is beneficial for students to value their practice of spending
money. First, this will inform them on where students like them mostly spend their
money. Upon this information, this study can enlighten them on how to use their
allowance wisely.

The Teachers. This study will help enlighten the teachers on the struggles of the grade 11
students financially and may be able to help them through this study.

The Administrators. This study may help the administrators on how to handle the
students who are struggling to manage their weekly allowance and maybe form some
programs to resolve the problem

The Parents. This study will help them to be aware if ever their kids is having trouble
balancing his or her weekly allowance so they can guide them.

The Researchers. This study will improve the researchers practice on the topic of
managing grade 11 students weekly allowance so they might be able to give out some tips
for them.

The Future Researchers. This study may benefit other researchers in the future by using
this as their guideline relating to managing weekly allowance.

Assumption of the Study

A Phenomenological Study on how students of PCU-SHS manages their weekly

allowance. Thus, there is no specific way on how students manages their weekly allowance.

Scope and Limitations

This research study was limited and conducted only at the Philippine Christian University
during the third to fourth semester of the school year 2018-2019. The respondents of the study
are ABM students from 16-19 years of age. The method of the researcher will use in collecting
information will be through survey. This is used to evaluate and estimate the amount of students
spend every week and what they spend their money on.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

In the article written by Aubrey Cohen Corbin entitled “Ways High Schoolers can start
managing their money” Atack sees some classmates putting little thought into managing money.
"A lot of them like to go out and buy lunch, because it's a new thing you get to do in high
school," the Seattle ninth-grader says. They also spend on goodies like video games and
basketball shoes. But Atack and other teens have started setting money aside for pricier
purchases and even as investments for the future. Financial habits good or bad are established
early. Financial experts and educators recommend five ways teens can start building good ones.

According to Corbin he sees some of his classmates who are irresponsible in managing
their money. Like they buy and do unnecessary things just to be in with the trend because it's a
high school student stuff to do but Corbin manages his money in a different way. He and with
some other teens don't spend money on unnecessary stuffs instead they invests for their future.

In the article written by May De Jesus-Palacpac entitled “School Allowance and Money
Management” I've taken note of the three jars strategy and have started teaching it to our eldest
son since two years ago. But since our kids are home-schooled and we’re usually just around
when they join activities, it has been unnecessary to give them school allowance until this school
year. This year, we enrolled them at a nearby blended Home School center where they get to join
Music, Arts, P.E., Values and elective classes once a week. Unlike in their previous MAPEH
center, they now have to be in school for 8 hours, so I thought it was a good opportunity to start
giving our eldest son school allowance, after all he’s eleven and needs to learn how to manage
his own money.
Philippine Christian University
Union High School of Manila
Senior High School

According to the article of May De Jesus-Palacpac, it says that they've tried different
kinds of strategies for their son to learn how to be responsible in managing his money at the age
of 11 because it is better to start teaching them at a young age. Also, as mentioned in the article
they tried paying their son for chores in the house but they realized it's not a good strategy
because it may affect their son negatively as he grows older. It should be a responsible to do
chores in the house not just because they pay you to do it but because you are a part of the
family. And they also taught their son that investing on something at a young age is a good idea
for your own future. So his school allowances are divided inti envelopes for him to manage it
more easily and if there are some money that's left they allows him to spend it and sometimes he
even shares it to his friends. It's not always about spending but it is also about giving.

In the article written by Sander (2012) pointed out “Financial worries affects students'
academic performance” as well as spending decision of many Americans. Moreover, the
National Survey of Student Engagement (2012) revealed that more than third of seniors and
more than quarter of freshmen did not purchase required academic materials because of its cost.
Both group said that they are worried about having enough money for everyday expenses.

The article of Sander explains some students, their allowance is not just for their
everyday expenses but they also need to save up for school expenses, materials, etc. So some of
them don't purchase school materials because they are worried that they might not have enough
money for their everyday expenses. Managing your allowance is really a struggle much more if
you are struggling financially and your allowance is not enough. That's why you need to set your
priorities and be responsible on what resources you'll spend your money for.

LOCAL LITERATURE

Mark Canlas “The Breakdown of students' allowance” MANILA, Philippines - For

many parents, the question of how much school allowance should they give their children is a
lingering one. By Philippine Star computation, parents could spend anywhere between P25,000
and P30,000 (computed at three times a week of classes for 18 weeks of two semester at P250
allowance per school year) College school students typically get P150 to P250 (excluding
transport allowance) per day. Students from exclusive schools like Ateneo and DLSU receive
where surrounding places to eat tend to be more expensive receive higher allowance.

According to Mark Canlas, there are different ways on how students manages their
weekly allowance, just like this, students from exclusive schools, they are tend to be more
expensive because of the school where they are studying, but some of the students, budgeting
their weekly allowance because of the less resources like a College student Donna who's doing
her best to handle her weekly allowance because she understand their situation, giving too much
allowance to a student risks financial responsibility because of the too much allowance, this extra
money can use this to hang out with friends, go to computer shops, etc. And some of the students
outside of Manila those who lives in municipalities can get only a hundred or a hundred fifty per
day because their parents know that, that money will be enough for them because they are just
living in municipalities and the transport allowance is easy for them to compute. It is right that
kids need to learn how to budget their weekly allowance or daily allowance.

In the article written by Ocampo (2016) “Factors that Affects the Budgeting of
Allowance” said that the students of a lower socio economic status often face additional
challenges including a dearth of learning resources, difficult learning condition and poor
motivation that negatively affect their academic performances.

Ocampo's article said that a student who came from a poor family don't have food to eat
that's why they become weak and can't understand properly so it's difficult and because of that it
causes them to decrease their self esteem and by that it can affect their academic performance.

CHAPTER 3

“Methods and Procedures”

Method of Research

The researcher used Descriptive Study Method because it is the easiest way for us to
study and explain clearly the topic. The descriptive research method is used to determine and
analyze on how students of PCU-SHS manages their weekly allowance and the problems
encountered by the respondents. It involves the description recording, analysis and process of
phenomena. The main quality of this type of research was to describe the data and characteristics
about what is being studied, frequency, averages and other statistical calculations.

Subjects of the Study

The respondents of study are from grade 11 Abimelech, Abednego, Ananias, Abiezer,
and Andrew. The respondents of this study has a total of fifty (50) respondents. There are more
female respondents than the male, the female consists of 35 respondents while the male has 15.
Most of the respondents age is 16 yrs. old that consists of 15 respondents and 17 yrs. old that
consists of 25 respondents while the 18-20 yrs. old is less than ten only.

Description of Research Instruments

The type of questionnaire we conduct is “Survey Questionnaire”. It is a set of questions

used in a survey. This questionnaire is used in gathering data to collect the different views of a
group of people from particular population. The type of questions in this survey is a “Yes or No”
Type. The questionnaire is consisted of questions pertaining to the impact of the students weekly
allowance on their daily life as SHS student.

Data Gathering Procedure

When gathering the data for the procedure, in the start the researcher reads the
instructions then explains about what the study is about and then hand out the survey
questionnaires to ten (10) students in different sections. The researcher made a survey
questionnaire about this study and also made a letter for the approval to conduct this study at
PCU-UHSM-SHS. The study was then conducted at May 2019.

After collecting all data, the researchers with the help of the statistician, tabulated and
tallied the survey.

Statistics Treatment Applied

The researchers will use descriptive study such as frequency count and percent to this
study. This study uses frequency ,corresponding to possible occurrences of an event and
percentage, used to explain how big or small a quantity is, compare to the other.

Conclusion
The conclusion of our topic "how students manage their weekly allowance" in Philippine
Christian University Senior High School is that there's a specific way how the student manage
their own weekly allowance. The students in Philippine Christian University they have weekly
allowance so they can manage it easy than daily allowance. Based on the table number 8 many of
the student can manage their weekly allowance. There's a 3 option how hard they manage their
weekly allowance mostly of the student said that they can manage it average not hard or very
hard.

Recommendations
Based on the study on how Senior High School students manages their weekly allowance
that was conducted in PCU-UHSM Senior High School there are several recommendations that
you can consider.

Students. Applying the study to their lives is recommended for the students. Being aware
and having knowledge about it may come in handy in the future. So for the students, it is
suggested that they apply it on their everyday lives.

Teachers. It would be great if the study is put into action. Taking the results of the study
into consideration may not only help the students but the teachers too. In this study both
sides will have a mutual understanding on the situation and may be able to help each
other out.

Future Researcher. Since the study only focused on the weekly allowance of the SHS
students, the future researchers may experiment on conducting the study on other levels.
Another one is targeting a different respondents for the study. Conducting a study is not
easy and it requires many things so hopefully this will be of any help to the future
researcher.
