1 Move Tool – moving, cutting and pasting selected

Marquee Tools - selection tool using shapes. Usually

selecting objects with straight edges.

Lasso Tools – selection tool using freehand

selections. Usually used for irregular shapes.

Quick Selection Tool and Magic Wand Tool –

selection tools using colors to select. These tools are
the easiest way to make a selection when colors are
clearly defined. 5

Before you can make changes to an image in 6

Photoshop, you need to select it first. Before you
can get a particular from an image and transfer it to
another image, you need to select it first. This is why
we have SELECTION TOOLS.

When you select an object it will surrounded by a

dotted line called marquee. After selecting, that’s
the time you can already copy, modify, transform or
move it to another location within the document or
to another file.

SHORTCUT KEYS

After making a new selection, you can easily access

some of the useful commands in the marquee
options bar using the following shortcut keys;

Long press SHIFT = Add to selection

Long press ALT = Subtract from selection

Long press CTRL = Move, copy, paste selection

Long press CTLR + ALT = Duplicate Selection 8

INVERSING A SELECTION

Inverse - It is the reversal of selection after

application. It can be found in the “select” options
in the menu bar or you can simply use the shortcut
keys SHIFT+CTRL+I.

Invert - It is the reversal of the color of a certain

selection after application. It can be found in the
“select” options in the menu bar or you can simply

TRANSFORMING A SELECTION
You can access transform after pasting a selection
by either locating it to the menu bar “edit” options
or you can simply use the shortcut keys CTRL+T.
Transform changes the shape, size and direction of
the selected object after transferring to a new
selection.
FEATHERING A SELECTION
The feather settings makes the border of a portrait
fades into the surrounding edge.
1. On the Tools Panel click any selection tool.
2. On the Options Bar, change the feather setting to
desired px. Then make a selection.
3. On the Menu Bar, click Layer, click Layer Mask,
and select Reveal Selection

The Refine Edge tool is a tool use to refine or make
the edges of a selection smooth.
1. On the Tools Panel click any selection tool and
make a selection.
2. On the Options Bar, click Refine Edges.
3. On the Refine Edge dialogue box, click and drag
radius slider to desired area.
4. click OK.
REFINE EDGE DIALOGUE BOX
View Mode – views the selection in different
18 backgrounds.
Radius – increases the size of the region around the
selection boundary.
Smooth – removes the rough areas around the
selection.
Feather – blurs or softens the edges of the selection.
Contrast – sharpens the soft selection edges.

MODIFYING A MARQUEE – changing size or shape of a
marquee.
1. After making a marquee, on the menu bar click Select
and select Modify
2. Choose the changes you want to make (expand,
contract or smoothen the marquee)

MOVING A MARQUEE/SELECTION BORDER
1. After making a marquee, on the options bar click New
Selection button.
2. Position your mouse on the center of the marquee
and drag to new location.
DESELECT A SELECTION
On the menu bar, click Select then Deselect or shortcut
key CTRL + D.
GROWING A SELECTION – increase the size of selection.
1. On the Tools Panel, choose selection tool and make a
selection.
2. On the menu bar, click Select and click Grow.
DELETING A SELECTION – remove a part of the image.
After making a selection, press Delete key. 23
