METHODOLOGY

Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted at Banisilan High School, Banisilan. North Cotabato.

Banisilan is a municipality located at the Northern quadrant of Cotabato Province

bounded on the north by the municipality of Wao, Lanao del Sur, on the east to northeast

by the municipality of Carmen and Bukidnon, on the west by Alamada, On the South by

the municipality of Pikit. According to LGPMS[2] (as of 2009), it has a population of

42,720 people in 7,678 households.

Banisilan High School is an institution that “commits to improve the academic

performance of the school thru training of teachers with active participation of learners

and strong linkage with the stakeholders.”

Students in this institution speak different dialects like Cebuano, Ilonggo,

Tagalog, Maranao, Tausug, etc.

Research Design

The study will utilize the descriptive-correlation method of research. It will

describe the respondents’ profile and use of correlation analysis to identify the

relationship of the variables in multimedia exposure , Generation Z Language and the

English proficiency in terms of grammar, vocabulary and spelling.

Respondents

The respondents of the study will be the 120 3rd year high school students who

will be enrolled at Banisilan High School in the school year 2014-2015. The 120

respondents will be randomly selected.

Instrumentation

The primary research instrument that will be used to gather data is categorized

into three parts. Part I will determine the profile of the respondents in terms of their age,

sex, and residence. Part II will be a questionnaire about the respondents’ level in

multimedia exposure both in print and electronic media. Part III will be divided into three

sets, namely, Grammar, Vocabulary, and Spelling.

This study will utilize various sources of questionnaires. The questionnaire for

grammar will be taken from the textbook, English of the New Generation, and the

vocabulary test will be taken from the SASE reviewer of MSU-Wao. For the spelling

part, the researcher will come up with a new, modified questionnaire. The respondents’
level in multimedia exposure will be interpreted using the scale, Always Exposed,

Sometimes Exposed, and Never Exposed. The frequency level of the students in the use

of Generation Z language will identified by their conversation using a tape recorder.

Data Gathering

The following procedures will be done by the researcher to gather important data

for the study.

A letter of permission will be sent to the principal of Banisilan National High

School before the conduct of the study.

Survey questionnaires on the profile of the respondents and multimedia exposure

will be administered by the researcher on the first meeting of the 2nd grading period. A

questionnaire for the English proficiency level (grammar usage, vocabulary and spelling)

will be administered by the researcher the following day. And, within the said grading

period, the researcher will record respondents’ conversations, without the respondents’

awareness so the frequency level in the use of Generation Z language will actually be

determined
Statistical Techniques

This study will rely on both qualitative and quantitative method of research.
Percentage,

mean, ranges, ranks and weighted average scores will be used to ascertain the level of

proficiency in English of the 30 third year students of Banisilan High School who will be

enrolled in the school year 2013-2014.

In determining the significant relationship between the respondents’ multimedia

exposure and the frequency level in the use of Generation Z language, the Pearson-
Product

Moment of correlation will be employed.
