I. Introduction

“Can primary students use tech productively and effectively?”

Nowadays, most of the parents are concern if it is a good idea for kids to use computer for
learning in the initial years. But despite their worries, It has been proven that by the use of
technologies, kids as early as 2 years old can memorize the alphabet and even learn to count
and sing just by watching kid’s video on Youtube app. According to a recent study, it has been
found that computer can help in the mental development of your child and help them have fun
while learning. Though no matter how effective it is, they do need guidance, because
everything that they will learn in their early years will affect their learning process once they are
introduce to preschool up until they reach primary school.

Primary schools are the formative years of learning and development and are an important part
of educational hierarchy which is crucial in shaping the future generation of a nation. At the mid
school level lot of initiative have been taken to digitize education such as the use of tablet
computers, interactive learning, visual displays and improvised curriculum. The same effort can
be seen replicated at the higher and tertiary level of education as well. However, when it comes
to primary schools- the use of technology in education is not as formidable. The reason for this
is that it very difficult to determine the ways and means in which ICT model at primary school
levels can be implemented.

Based from a research conducted by Rabail Tahir and Fahim Arif , 2016, Today technology is
progressively being recognized as a significant learning tool for helping young children in
developing their cognitive, social and learning skills. Although some researchers are against the
use of technology for the learning of children, in spite of this the effects of technology have
been extensively recognized in the area of education and have proved to be very positive for
the development of young children. Children who make use of technology show better
language skills, intelligence, structural knowledge and problem solving skills as compared to
children who do not use technology for their learning. Today’s children are more exposed to
the advance technology even at an early age. The experiences with the latest technology can
surely pave the way for extraordinary learning opportunities. On the other hand without an
educational element, technology cannot reach to its full potential for supporting the learning
and development of children. The educational component in early childhood programs often
means that an adult is nearby, interacts with the children and also provide the opportunities for
peer-to-peer learning in order to encourage and help children gain the skills they require for
success.

According to Sunil Gupta, 2017, There are 9 benefits of e-Learning for students.

1. Online Learning Accommodates Everyone’s Needs

The online method of learning is best suited for everyone. This digital revolution has led to
remarkable changes in how the content is accessed, consumed, discussed, and shared. Online
educational courses can be taken up by office goers and housewives too, at the time that suits
them. Depending on their availability and comfort, many people choose to learn at weekends
or evenings.

2. Lectures Can Be Taken Any Number Of Times

Unlike classroom teaching, with online learning you can access the content an unlimited
number of times. This is especially required at the time of revision when preparing for an exam.
In traditional form of learning, if you cannot attend the lecture, then you have to prepare for
that topic on your own; in eLearning, you can attend the lectures whenever you want with
ease.

3. Offers Access to Updated Content

A prime benefit of learning online is that it makes sure that you are in synchronization with
modern learners. This enables the learner to access updated content whenever they want it.

4. Quick Delivery Of Lessons

eLearning is a way to provide quick delivery of lessons. As compared to traditional classroom

teaching method, this mode has relatively quick delivery cycles. This indicates that the time
required to learn is reduced to 25%-60% of what is required in traditional learning. There are
some of the reasons why the learning time is reduced by eLearning:

Lessons starts quickly and also wrapped up in a single learning session. This enables training
programs to easily roll out within a few weeks, or sometime even days.

Learners can define their own speed of learning instead of following the speed of the whole
group.

Saves time as a student does not need to travel to the training venue. You can learn at the
comfort of your own place.

Students can choose to study specific and relevant areas of the learning material without
focusing on each and every area. For example, they can skip certain areas they do not want to
learn.

3
5. Scalability

eLearning helps in creating and communicating new training, policies, concepts, and ideas.
Whether it is for formal education or entertainment, eLearning is very quick way of learning!

6. Consistency

eLearning enables educators to get a higher degree of coverage to communicate the message
in a consistent way for their target audience. This ensures that all learners receive the same
type of training with this learning mode.

7. Reduced Costs

eLearning is cost effective as compared to traditional forms of learning. The reason for this
price reduction is because learning through this mode happens quickly and easily. A lot of
training time is reduced with respect to trainers, travel, course materials, and accommodation.

This cost effectiveness also helps in enhancing the profitability of an organization. Also, when
you are studying at your own place, you are relieved from paying for travel expenses (e.g.
accommodation) when training happens in another city/state and/or external learning
materials.

8. Effectiveness

e-Learning has a positive influence on an organization’s profitability. It makes it easy to grasp

the content and digest it. It results in improved scores on certifications, tests, or other types of
evaluation.
Enhanced ability to learn and implement the new processes or knowledge at the workplace.
Help in retaining information for a longer time.

9. Less Impact On Environment

As eLearning is a paperless way of learning, it protects the environment to a lot of extent. As

per a study done on eLearning courses, it has been found that distance-based learning
programs consumed around 90% less power and generated 85% less amount of CO2 emissions
as compared to traditional campus-based educational courses. With eLearning, there is no need
to cut trees for obtaining paper. Thus, eLearning is a highly eco-friendly way of learning.

II. Current State of Technology

Living in a modern time, the use of technologies is rapidly taking over the traditional way of
living. Apparently, Primary schools nowadays still make use of hardcopy, visual aids and manual
system when it comes to kids learning. Though we are living in a new generation, some Parents
and Teachers believes that Traditional learning method works and still best for their children.
Teacher’s presents their lessons through pictures, songs and even story telling. It may be old
fashion in some ways but there are some advantages or reasons why it is still being considered.

One is, most students consider the traditional classroom environment beneficial for learning
because they can interact with the teacher and their classmates. Especially for people who
learn better through cooperative activities and group work, the possibility of asking questions
and receiving immediate answers is important, Interaction.

And the learning atmosphere of the traditional classroom helps them to stay focused and keeps
them motivated; unlike virtual classrooms, where procrastination can become a common
attitude, traditional classrooms preserve a feeling of “now and here” all through the learning
process.

Another one is, it is Accessible. Some students don’t have access to technological devices, so
online classes are out of the question. Some don’t know how to use them, and some don’t care
about them. In a traditional classroom environment, learning begins with the teacher sharing
his knowledge with students, proceeds with discussions between the teacher and the students
and ends with the new information written in notebooks.

And lastly, it is Organize. Traditional classroom learning provides students with a fixed schedule
and specific periods dedicated exclusively to learning. Most adults lead busy lives these days,
whether they have a demanding job or children in school.

But despite the advantages, there are also disadvantages and one of it with the generation that
we lived in, kids might get left behind when it comes to technologies.
