ASSIGNMENT 3

Assignment 3: Publishing Company Pitch

Sara Gomez is a Latin Pop Artist. Breaking with

tropical percussion mixed with electronic sounds

and soft guitars, she creates music that brings a

South American taste through romantic ballads and

her vocal versatility. She makes Urban Pop music

in Spanish with a lot of fusions, especially with

vocal registers ranging from falsetto highs to lower

tier notes. Sara Gomez is classed in the same genre

tier with acts like Camila Cabello, Lauren

Jauregui, and Maluma. Her music channels

different elements across multiple genres like

traditional Latin, Electronic, and Pop to create a refreshing mix for Latin music overall.

Sara Gomez is a 21 years old singer-musician-songwriter born and raised in Puerto La

Cruz, Venezuela and currently resides in Miami, Fl. At 8 years old, Sara began taking vocal

lessons and instrumental training. At around 16 years old, she expanded her vocal training with

notable professors in the capital of Venezuela and started her music composition program. What

moved her into music was her grandfather who always sang with her at the church. That’s where

everything started. Her family always tried to prevent her from being a singer, especially her

parents since her mom is a lawyer and dad is an engineer. They went on back and forth, until she

decided to turn her hobby into a professional career, and they’d do anything to support her as

long as she believed that it was the right decision.

ASSIGNMENT 3

I was introduced to Sara by a mutual friend at Full Sail University. The person whom I met Sara

through has very close connections with her. You can find more information about her and her

music at https://www.instagram.com/saragomezmusic/.

The song chosen for requesting publishing accommodations is Sara Gomez’s “Esta

Historia” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOBCx59WCbA). This is one of Sara’s first

singles to release. It peaked at number seven on the Venezuelan music charts at the time of

release. It proves to be her most successful release to this day and is regarded as one of her first

debuts as an international artist. For the placement of this song, the decision was to implement

this song in a commercial for an artist that is already affiliated with the publishing company. The

company already has a big catalog of artists currently working with them, so adding a little

advertisement no more than 30 seconds in the beginning of a music video can prove beneficial

for both parties. Sara Gomez and the chosen publisher can develop a collaborative and proactive

relationship when it comes to growing her career internationally. Sara came to the United States

from Venezuela in 2018, and this would mark the first step for exposure in the Latin genre here

in the United States.

The publishing company chosen for Sara Gomez is TuneCore. To be more specific, the

targeted headquarters is located in Atlanta, GA. This is due to Sara Gomez residing in Miami,

FL, so this was the best option in terms of convenience for travelling to meetings. TuneCore is a

music publishing and distribution company that was founded in 2006 by Jeff Price, Peter Wells,

and Gary Burke (Byrd, 2014). Originally, the company was just a distribution center for

independent artists to get their records sold in record stores. After the fall of record stores in the

years leading to 2010, the company shifted its focus toward music publishing (Byrd, 2014).

ASSIGNMENT 3

Tying this back to the artist pitched, TuneCore can provide many services for Sara

Gomez. Sara does not have a large social media following, and the accumulating numbers

fluctuate every day. To elaborate, some days Sara would be receiving 50 new followers, and

other days she would be receiving only 10 new followers. TuneCore offers the “TuneCore

Social” management tool. This is a management tool that is utilized by the artist to keep their

interaction with their followers all in one place. This tool can also be used to track the insights

and infographics of how you are growing as an artist. Another service TuneCore provides is the

ability to license your music to Spotify, Pandora, and Tidal. Sara Gomez does not have music on

many streaming services at the moment. With the help of TuneCore, she can make her music

more accessible to everyone through all streaming outlets. Artists in the Latin genre that are

under TuneCore include Marco Di Meco, Scott Victor Gutierrez, and Carlo Zannetti. Based on

these artists, this further supports TuneCore as a great fit for Sara Gomez since they are familiar

with independent Latin musicians.

ASSIGNMENT 3

TuneCore is the perfect fit for Sara Gomez for a particular reason. That is, 100% of the

revenue made from the music goes directly to the artists. According to Ayana Byrd of Fast

Company, TuneCore is ahead of the music industry by multiple steps for allowing their artists to

control their revenue streams. “A label would retain a significant percentage of ownership over

the music, whereas with TuneCore, the artists have 100% ownership and are responsible for

paying a flat fee, which can be under $10 depending on the service” (Byrd, 2014). This is a

huge benefit for Sara, as she is still getting familiar with the United States and is on a lower

budget currently. Artists who are currently with TuneCore have voiced their opinions about

how the service is. JSWISS stated "The control and ease of TuneCore is invaluable to an

independent artist. Some parts of navigating a career in music can be complicated; this isn't one

of them" (TuneCore, 2018). The flat fee is very affordable, and the services can be used

effectively to help Sara grow here. Lastly, the Atlanta headquarters is a location nearest to

Miami, FL. This makes the travelling for meetings and pitches more convenient for the artist.

With that being said, the contact needs to be established with a representative of artist

relations at the Atlanta headquarters. It was decided that the person that will be contacted for this

matter is Joncier Rienecker, the Manager of Entertainment Relations in the Atlanta and

neighboring regions. This information was found on the official TuneCore website in the

staff/team section. The letter has to be sent to the founding headquarters in Brooklyn, New York,

as the network of headquarters across the globe relay their artist relations information through

this facility.
