Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I. Introduction

Educational technology refers to the gadgets and technological advancements used to enhance

the learning environment of the students. These include modern day technology such as television,

tablets, and computers. As technology advancements immersed, students must be able to use this

technology for problem solving, learning in higher education, succeeding in their future careers,

and living their daily lives.

This generation of students has engaged with computers. Since the innovation of technology,

students has access to lessons, examinations through the internet, and discover new sources of

information. Educational technology has paved the way for the students for easier access in ideas

and information. Therefore, the students’ academic performance may accelerate just by being

exposed to the modern day technology.

Chung (2007) states that technology is a significant part of students’ lives academically.

Students learn better if they use technology in their studies. Educational technology has paved the

way for the students to prepare themselves for the future when integrated successfully into the

school’s curriculum.

Children who had their childhoods during 2005 onward were exposed to technology and have

better grasp on it rather than the usual of books and catalogs. Based on this observation, these

children today are more technological oriented. Due to that, they are more experienced and have

better learning capabilities using technology and the added bonus of using the internet.

According to Cavanaugh 2009, students who were exposed to online-learning environments are

typically independent. In addition, they have better literacy, strong time management, and

technology skills as opposed to those who weren’t exposed to it.

Background of the Study

In recent years, technology is increasingly developed. It made an impact to students

as it provides widespread excitement and full potential in education. Software and

programs are used to promote educational technology that further encourages students to

expand their knowledge, and support students’ learning in innovative ways.

Computer and internet itself generally do not boost students’ academic performance

of students from kindergarten to senior high school, but it do increase computer usage and

cultivates computer proficiency of the students. Those students without access at home or

at school may struggle to comply online activities and may have a hard time to enhance

digital literacy skills.

Evidently, websites and programs expand access to technology and had been

concrete in accelerating usage of improving computer skills of students. Educational

technology has the capability to prevail over the the traditional classroom by making

customize activity to students. Educational software enhances students’ practice specific

skills in tutoring approachers. Computer-based education have shown massive effect in

improving academic achievement.

Educational technology is meant to help the students learn. At the same time, it has

downside for some students who are not technology-inclined. Now, it is very contradicting.

I. Theoretical Framework

Oliver & Carr, 2009

- Students are able to learn from the web-based environment around them and gather others and become

a community of learners. Lave and Wenger took these ideas and formed the term the Communities of

Practice.

Cavanaugh, 2009

- Only students who were immersed in online learning environments and ended up successful in those

programs are independent towards learning. In addition, they built strong time management, good

literacy, and better technological skills.

Johnson et al., 2005

- Through the years, educational technology has adapted to the ever-changing technologies and the

modern as well as the societal changes. It has expanded towards all sorts of gadgets and started

adopting instructional design paradigms that are suited for the integration of technology. In 2005,

Educate in partnership with the New Media Consortium, identified both educational gaming and social

networking apps as technologies have a significant effect on students’ academic performance.

Keengwe et al, 2008

- According to research, the integration of technology has increased the interaction within the students

and the learning environment.

Fouts 2000, p. 11

- Because the new, emerging technologies become interactive, it is easier to create learning environments

where students can learn by doing, receive feedback, and continually better their understanding and

create new knowledge.

This study includes Educational Technologies such as E-Learning System, Multimedia, and

Audio- visual that affects the academic performance that limits to: visual presentation, class participation,

and Extracurricular Activities of the Intermediate pupils in Cittadini School S.Y 2019-2020. Intermediate

pupils’ academic performance becomes the dependent variable dependent in the knowledge, exposure, and

usage of educational technology showing either good or bad results. This study aims to find out the effects

of Educational Technology to the Academic performance of Intermediate pupils with all these variables.

III. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the Effects of Educational Technology to the Academic Performance

of Intermediate Pupils in Cittadini School, San Pedro, Laguna, S.Y. 2019-2020, for further

clarifications, the study will answer these questions:

1. How can Educational Technology be described in terms of:

a. E-Learning System

b. Multimedia

c. Audio-visual

2. How can Academic Performance be measured using Standardized Tests in major subjects:

a. Mathematics

b. English

c. Araling Panlipunan

3. Does the Effects of Educational Technology affect the Academic Performance of Intermediate

Pupils?

4. Is there a significant relationship between Educational Technology and Academic Performance of

Intermediate Pupils in Cittadini School?

IV. Scope and Limitation

This study is primarily focus on the effects of educational technology to their academic

performance using standardized exam in Math, Science, English, Filipino, and Araling

Panlipunan. The researchers aim to have knowledge to know if educational technology improve

and accelerate the performance of Intermediate Pupils in accordance with the standard of the

curriculum.

This study is limited only to the Intermediate Students with a total of 181 students in

Cittadini School, school year 2019-2020. The researchers will only be measuring the effects in

major subjects. This would be done through questionnaire to the intermediate students with the

use of electronic devices.
