ABSTRACT

Technology moves faster than our imaginations can keep up with. “Self-luminous devices”
such as phone, tablets, laptops and e-readers are known to emit a short-wavelength light we call
the Blue Light. When a person is exposed to Blue Lights at night, their body can react as if it was
exposed to sunlight and exposure to light from self-luminous devices can suppress melatonin,
the sleep hormone, by about 23%, and we feel more awake which in turn results to less sleeping
time and drowsy students struggling to stay awake in school. In our generation today we cannot
fully avoid using these devices for it is already part of our routine. Tech companies implemented
Light Filtering Software on their manufactured gadgets to address the growing issue regarding
the harmful effects of Blue Light and on the other hand Blue Light Screen Protectors are also
used. The study aims to compare the effectiveness of Light Filtering Software and Blue Light
Screen Protectors to prove which intervention can effectively help people to improve the quality
of their sleep and provide results that may help the user on choosing preferences when avoiding
the harmful effects of the Blue Light. The researchers will look for participants who are willing to
use light filtering software and blue light screen protector on their mobile phones for a week and
ask the participants to accomplish the Pittsburgh Sleep diary and other necessary questionnaires
to evaluate sleep quality.
