ASRTU SPECIFICATION FOR TYRE RETREADING

MATERIAL (COLD PROCESS):VULCANISING CEMENT/
SOLUTION;BONDING GUM/CUSHION GUM.
(Independently Not Curable)

0.0 SPECIFICATION NO. : AS:444:74:AUG:2009

1.0 SCOPE :

1.1 This standard prescribes requirements & methods of testing of Tyre

Retreading Material (Cold Process).viz Vulcanising Cement/ Solution &
Bonding Gum/Cushion Gum.

1.2 This is a purchase specification and does not include manufacturing

details. The parts/material supplied against this specification shall be
compatible with the original equipment.

1.3 The supplier shall provide detail drawings and specifications to the
purchasing/ inspecting authority whenever such information is specifically
called for.

1.4 The material offered against this specification shall conform to this
specification in full. The tests shall be carried out on the part directly or on
the specimen prepared from the components'. If any of the samples fail in
any one or more tests specified, the sample shall be considered as not
having met the requirements of this specification.

1.5 It is the manufacturer's prime responsibility to satisfy the inspection

authority that the commodity conforms to this standard. This may be
accomplished by performing the tests specified in this standard.

1.6 Sample selection shall be the responsibility of the Quality Assurance

Officer. Required quality for complete testing as per this specification
shall be supplied.

1.7 This specification supersedes earlier specifications including

AS:163:72:June:2008.

2.0 APPLICATION AND REFERENCE :

2.1 This specification covers the requirements of tyre retreading material

suitable for cold retreading process.

3.0 TERMINOLOGY :

3.1 Black Vulcanising Cement :

Black Vulcanising Cement is a material which is applied on the buff
carcass prior to application of precured tread rubber for retreading. This
acts as a bonding media between the tread and the carcass and/or
cushion. A base stock with Natural Rubber is made and mixed with rubber
solvent in a cement mixing churn. The resultant solution should have
uniform viscosity and required total solid content (TSC).

3.2 Bonding gum is also supplied in suitable containers for use by retreaders
for repairing minor depressions in casings especially in areas where cords
are visible on the buffed casings.

Bonding Gum : a) Gauge - 1.2 mm + 0.05

b) Width for 9.00 x 20 Tyre - 195 mm, 215 mm,

205mm + 2mm roll to roll.

4.0 REQUIREMENTS :

4.1 The material shall be a homogeneous compound, free from foreign

matter. No portion of the material shall have distortion or blooming. The
backing film shall intimately adhered to the cushion gum without
compound folding. When the backing film is removed the cushion backing
shall have a tacky and glossy surface, free from any colouration.

4.2 Physical Properties :

In case the manufacturer informs that their material i.e. Cushion

Gum/Bonding Gum and Vulcanising Solution do not have required
curatives to get cured independently, such material shall be subjected to
tests as prescribed in Table.

4.3 Test Quantity:

Bonding Gum/Cushion Gum and Vulcanising Cement/Solution 0.5 Kg

each

5.0 SHELF LIFE :

5.1 Bonding Gum/ Cushion Gum and Vulcanising Cement shall render
satisfactory performance and shall meet the physical property
requirement specified as given in Table, when tested within 6 months
from the date of receipt of supplies.

AS:444:74:AUG:2009

The material shall be transported and stored as indicated below:-

a) Material shall be protected from any physical damage during handling

and transit.
b) Material shall not be stored near boilers, heaters and other source of
heat.
c) Maximum ambient temperature of area of storage shall preferably be
350C.
d) Area of storage shall preferably be cool and dry.

6.0 PACKING :

6.1 The material shall be packed in suitable containers with a standard net
weight or as agreed upon.

6.2 Markings:

The packed containers. drums, cartons shall be labelled with the

following.

a) Trade Mark b) Gauge

c) Net weight or volume d) Date of Manufacturing & batch No.
e) Expiry date f) Name of the manufacturer.

APPENDIX `A’

1. Total Solid Content

a) Instrument used : Petridish

: Physical Balance
: Hot air oven

b) Sample Preparation

i) Pour out the sample in clean petridish

ii) Weight the petridish with sample
iii) Keep the petridish with sample in hot air over for atleast 1
hour at 100 degree centigrade for drying
iv) Take out the dried sample in petridish
v) Cool it & weigh the dried sample with petridish
Then T.S.C = W 1 – W 2 x 100
W3 – W2

W1 = Dried sample weight + petridish weight

W2 = Petridish weight
W3 = Liquid Sample + Petridish weight

APPENDIX `B
2. Adhesion Testing

To determine the bonding strength of cushion and vulcanising solution,

between the two pieces of tread rubber samples.

a) Equipment used : 1) Scissors

2) Autoclave
3) Pneumatic Cutter
4) Adhesion Tester Machine

b) Sample preparation
i) Cut the 2 double buffed tread pieces 2” wide in
pneumatic cutter
ii) Vulcanising solution is applied on the 2 double buffed
tread surfaces. Applied area is 3” long, 2” Wide
iii) Cushion sample of 3” long & 2” wide is made ready
iv) Drying time of cement on the tread surface is given
approx. 15 minutes at ambient temp.

v) After drying cushion piece is placed on one of the

AS:444:74:AUG:2009

cemented tread surface by pressing

vi) Other cemented tread piece is then adjoined exactly over
the cushion which has been applied to the tread and
pressed.

3. Curing

i) For curing the sample is placed into the autoclave bag and is
clamped thereafter.
ii) Close the autoclave
iii) Start the on switches of heater and pressure
iv) Autoclave curing is done by keeping the following parameters
which are to be strictly followed:

Temperature : 99 + 10C
Time : 150 minutes
Pressure : 85 psi

v) Remove the sample when cure time is complete

vi) Cool the samples in water until lab room temperature is reached
0
(25 C) or let the samples be on lab table as it is for 6 hours
(atleast) until lab room temperature is reached before pulling
adhesion.

4. Testing Procedure

i) One piece of tread (open end) is placed in the top stationary grip
of the adhesion tester.
ii) Other piece of tread is placed in the lower moving grip clamp
iii) Then sample is pulled until break/separate into two pieces.
