handle, optimise and control data for the application of solutions to contemporary problems. KU Leuven academic calendar
The emphasis is not on abstract mathematical theory, but on the application, the design, analysis, implementation and use Applying
of mathematical models and algorithms in order to solve mathematical problems from industry. Application deadline 2020-2021
The programme’s primary component is the core technical education, covering a variety of advanced topics in How to apply
mathematics, process control, system identification, numerical optimisation, numerical simulation of differential equations, www.kuleuven.be/application
scientific software, cryptography, and project-based learning, where students solve a problem that requires a combination
of the knowledge and skills taught during the core education.

Admission requirements
Objectives
3. Competent in designing
- (9)Can reformulate a design problem in specific design objectives.
- (10)Can design and implement mathematical techniques and algorithms in order to solve problems in application fields
such as industrial process control, data mining, image processing, scientific computing and simulation, and cryptography.
- (11)Can design solutions for multidisciplinary problems, often with an open nature.
- (12)Controls the complexity of the design of mathematical techniques and algorithms by means of abstraction and
structured thinking.
- (13)Can critically evaluate and report on design results.
- (14)Can handle the variability of the design process due to external circumstances or new insights.
4. A scientific approach
- (15)Has a systematic approach, critical attitude and understanding of the specificity of science and technology
- (16)Can critically observe current mathematical theories, models and methodologies in the context of engineering
problems, and make a sound decision.
- (17)Can evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of methods.
- (18)Demonstrates academic integrity.
- (19)Is able to independently keep up with developments in their field.
Many small, dynamic, young companies are active in the field of mathematical engineering, but even big players in
materials, chemistry, automotive, aerospace, biomedical industries, as well as finance, are increasingly interested in
mathematical engineering thanks to the ever-increasing complexity of mathematical models and ever more stringent
environmental standards and comfort expectations.
Many of our young graduates start their careers in the R&D departments of high-tech companies or matriculate into one of
the university’s PhD programmes. Whichever option they choose, our graduates find themselves at the centre of an in-
demand industry with sought after skills and abilities.
During your bachelor's and master's programme you can already shape your own profile by choosing a certain
specialisation, studying abroad (Erasmus), doing a work placement, or starting your own business.
The Student Career Centre is happy to put you on the right track towards your first work experience. The centre also
coaches you in the search for an interesting job and helps you with job interviews. For students wanting to start their own
business KU Leuven also has Lcie, the KU Leuven community that encourages students with innovative and
entrepreneurial ideas.
Don’t know where to start? The Student Career Centre's databases contain offers for jobs, volunteer work, innovation
projects and student jobs. You can also visit one of the events organised by the Career Centre.

Admission requirements
In the context of the wellbeing law certain data must be stored for each student and they must be informed timely on the
subject of:
the risks to which the student is exposed during the study programme (practicals, traineeships, master's theses,…)
the associated preventive measures for each risk, such as medical follow-up, personal protective equipment and
instructions.
The risks and preventive measures are collected in the HSE-file for students. Through this link you can consult the HSE-
file. The HSE-file will be used for traineeships and/or master’s theses. For more information about traineeships, we refer to
the following site: traineeship.. For questions, please contact the HSE Department.
