Science Understanding: Living things have a variety of external features (ACSSU017).
Living things live in different places where their needs are met (ACSSU211).

Science as a Human Endeavour- Science involves questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events
(ACSHE021).

Science Inquiry Skills: Questioning and Predicting- Respond to and pose questions and make predictions about
familiar objects and events (ACSIS024).
Planning and conducting- Participate in different types of guided investigations to explore and answer questions, such
as manipulating materials, testing ideas and accessing information sources (ACSIS025).
Processing and analysing data and information- Use a range of methods to sort information, including drawings and
provided tables (ACSIS027).
Evaluating- Compare observations with those of others (ACSIS213).

Year 1 Achievement Standard:

By the end of Year 1, students describe objects and events that they encounter in their everyday
lives, and the effects of interacting with materials and objects. They describe changes in their local
environment and how different places meet the needs of living things.

Students respond to questions, make predictions, and participate in guided investigations of

everyday phenomena. They follow instructions to record and sort their observations and share them
with others.

Level Science
Level Four -Explains how the external features of small animals are
used for feeding, movement and protection.
-Provides extended information on the habitat of small
animals and how habitat is important for their survival.
-Poses questions that can be investigated, plans own
investigations and makes predictions.
-Independently uses informal measurements in the
collection and recording of observations.
Level Three -Identifies the external features of small animals for
feeding, movement and protection.
-Describes the habitat of small animals.
-Identifies the ways small animals depend on their habitat
for survival.
-Participates in guided investigations, responds to and
poses simple questions and makes predictions.

Level Two -Suggests the external features of small animals that are
used for feeding, movement and protection.
-Describes how small animals might protect themselves.
- Responds to questions and makes observations
- Requires help to use informal measurements to collect
and record observations.
Level One -Unable to responds to simple questions
-Makes simple observations using senses.
