DYO Investigation #1

Background:
(a.) I know that saturated fats are unhealthy and can
come from animals; I also know that saturated fats are
in fact healthy and come from plants. Unsaturated fats
are good fats because they keep your body healthy and
keep you from getting sick. Saturated fats are bad for
you because they lower your cholesterol. The human
body stores extra fat in your fat cells. Fat plays a big
role in maintaining healthy skin and hair.
(b.) How much fat is in a food.

Purpose:
(a.) I am doing this experiment to find out how much fat
is in one of my favorite Italian snacks, a Chocolate
Biscotti. One reason being is because I eat a lot of
them and I would like to find out how much fat I am
actually consuming.
Materials:
(a.) Chocolate Biscotti Beaker Petri Dish
Graduated Cylinder Stirrer Acetone
Procedure:
(a.) Find the mass of your food.
Weigh a beaker and record weight, and then add 10mL
of acetone to beaker.
Stir until well mixed, and then allow it to settle for 1
minute.
Carefully pour acetone into Petri dish.
N E X T D A Y:
Weigh food and beaker.
Clean beaker and calculate weight difference from
cylinder and food, as well as just the food.

Scientific prediction and Reasoning:

What can you predict about this experiment?
I predict that the Chocolate Biscotti will have a lard percentage of fat because when we
used chocolate as a tester in the class experiment it had a lard percentage of fat. Since there is more
than chocolate in the Biscotti I predict the percentage will go up way more.

Data:
Food Type Weight of beaker w/ food Weight of beaker w/ food Amount of fat execrated
(1st time) (last time) from food
Total (g) ~%fat in food
Chocolate Biscotti

Chocolate Biscotti 173.7g 171g 11.9g ~ 22.6%

Conclusion:

Well our procedure was very easy. We wanted to find the percentage of fat is in Chocolate Biscotti. We
measured our food and then poured the acetone on it to get all of the fat. We found out that the
percentage of fat was 22.7%. I expected it to be more than that because when we found the percentage
of just chocolate alone, as a class it was 38%. I found out that surprising that a Chocolate Biscotti has
less fat than chocolate alone. Maybe it depends on what kind of chocolate there was. I also found it
surprising that chocolate Biscotti has more fat than a butter bagel. My findings make me want to cut down
on how much I eat biscotti. Looks like I will have to find a new favorite snack. I realized that I need to think
about if each outcome is actually correct. The only way to know for sure, would be to do it again and see
if I get the same results or close to the same results.
