OUTLINE AND RUBRIC EVALUATION INSTRUCTIONS

You have access to Office 365 for free as a Liberty University student. You are required to use
this tool to complete this assignment. If you have not already done so, you can access your
personal Office 365 account by going to www.liberty.edu/Office365.

ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES
• To develop an outline. Outline will contain an intro, thesis statement, three study strategies
(main points), sub-points, and a conclusion with two new strategies to try.
• To evaluate your own work using a grading rubric.
• To successfully submit a .pdf document and a shareable link.

IMPORTANT NOTES
• Complete this assignment using Microsoft Word ONLINE.
• The tutorial presentations in the Week 5 will teach you how to set up Office 365, utilize
OneDrive, and create the shareable link that you will need to submit.
• Review the presentations in the Assignment folder of Module/Week 5.

PART 1: THE OUTLINE

• Topic: Think about what study strategies have worked for you in the past and which ones
have not.
• Narrow your choices to three specific study strategies to use as your main points.
Examples would include flashcards, mnemonic devices, and reading aloud. Avoid broad
topics such as test-taking skills or pre-reading strategies.
• Utilize the outline template on the next page to create your outline. Your outline can be
more detailed than the one below. Outline points and sub-points can consist of a phrase,
sentence, quote, or reference; however, do not write full paragraphs. Be sure to erase any
instructional text and insert your own content.
• For instruction on how to create a strong, effective thesis statement, review this resource:
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/545/01/. In particular, look at the example of
an expository thesis statement.

PART 2: THE RUBRIC

• Use the rubric to evaluate your work.
• Complete the “Points Earned” column for each section. Be honest!
• Provide an explanation for points deducted and insights into what you did well.
• Note: If you don’t like your score, fix the outline and try again!

PART 3: SUBMISSION
• Save your outline and completed rubric as ONE .PDF file.
• Open the assignment link and attach the .pdf file.
• Create a shareable link and copy and paste the link into the “Comments” textbox located
right beneath where you attach the PDF file. Submit the assignment by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on
Monday of Module/Week 5.

STUDY STRATEGIES OUTLINE

I. Introduction

A. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”

– Nelson Mandela

B. Give Details about previous experience – Education is an extrodinarily powerful

tool; an equalizer in today’s world. While plenty of students understand this and

actively pursue education. Many are also struggling to absorb the information

that’s presented to them.

C. Thesis Statement – Three study/learning strategies I know are effective are

teaching it to someone else, practical application, and group study.

II. Body – In this section, outline 3 specific study/learning strategies that you have

successfully used. The supporting evidence will be how you used the strategy and

how/why it worked for you.

A. Successful study strategy #1 – Teaching it to someone else.

1. Supporting evidence – I would tutor people in precalculus, and it helped

me better my grasp on formulas.

2. Supporting evidence – When I felt like I was struggling with a concept, I

would explain it to someone else. Teaching someone else refines your

understanding and application, because you have to explain, logically,

how the concept is learned and executed.

B. Successful study strategy #2 – Practical application.

1. Supporting evidence – Throughout my day I’ve started describing

situations, or just conversating, in Spanish.

2. Supporting evidence – I was pushing myself to practically apply what I’ve

learned, so it became engrained and almost like a second nature. It has

helped with my fluidity and understanding of the Spanish language.

C. Successful study strategy #3 – Group study, or communication.

1. Supporting evidence – I’ve tutored with fluent speakers for my

conversational Spanish class. Studying with others combines multiple

strategies to make the concept you’re struggling with manageable.

2. Supporting evidence – When practicing Spanish with others I’ve had to

both teach and apply what I’ve learned; it’s an all encompassing study

strategy that I can personally testify about.

III. Conclusion

A. Students need to be conscious of study strategies and other means of maximizing

efficiency in their studies.

B. Being a student can be frustrating, but it’s a rewarding, profitable, journey to

embark. Nelson Mandela is famously quoted as saying,“It always seems

impossible until it’s done”. Apply these study strategies to see a boost in

conceptual understanding, as well as organizational skills.

C. New strategies to try

1. New strategy #1 – Being patient and flexible; this is a metacognitive

strategy, but keep trying new strategies and eventually one will stick.

2. New strategy #2 – Another metacognitive strategy for studying efficiently

is time management. Spacing out study sessions into more intensive, shorter, periods

increase the efficiency and retention of information.
