Topic: Family Solidarity

Family
 It is the basic unit of the society.
 Everything learned and experienced inside one's home is manifested in the way a person acts
and deals with others. Hence, it is essential to build strong family foundations.

Solidarity
 unity or agreement of feeling or action, especially among individuals with a common interest;
mutual support within a group.

Family Solidarity
 refers to the degree of closeness and support between the members of the family. The notion of
solidarity helps us to understand how people of different families relate to, help and depend on
one another in their daily lives.
 The relationships we experience in our homes affect the way we relate to others.
 We need to be aware of who we are and the factors that promote who we are.
 Example:
o Traditional Filipino families often consult each other about when making important
decisions.
o "Going to college, taking a job overseas, and getting married may sometimes be
individual decisions, but quite often they are family decisions" (Gochenour 1990: 18-19).
o Actual family involvement in personal decision making has decreased over the years.

How can we enhance Filipino family solidarity?

 By bringing up old traditions like:
o eating family dinners all together without using gadgets
o joining different leisure activities with your family
o attending family seminars or recollections
o go to church and attend mass
o respect to the elders
 Be there for one another, understand each other and learn to forgive.
