a) Briefly describe the following types of bonding with an example for each.
i) Ionic Bonding
ii) Hydrogen Bonding

b) An attraction of Coulombic force exits between the ions of Cs+ and I- that touched each other
is 2.83 x 10-9 N. The ionic radius of the Cs+ ion is 0.165 nm. Calculate the ionic radius of the I-.
Given: Electron charge, e = 1.6 x 10-19 C, Coulomb’s constant, k = 9 x 109 Nm2C-2.
(Ans: 0.12 nm)

strength, hardness and melting point.
i) Ionic Bonding
ii) Metallic Bonding

b) Given that the attractive force between a pair of Sr2+ and O2- ions is 1.29 x 10-8 N and the
ionic radius of O2- ions is 0.132 nm. Calculate the ionic radius of the Sr2+ ion.
Given: Electron charge, e = 1.6 x 10-19 C, Coulomb’s constant, k = 9 x 109 Nm2C-2

other. Assume the ionic radius of the sodium ion to be 0.095 nm and that of fluoride 0.136
nm.

2. Calculate the force attraction between Mg2+ and O2- ions that touch each other. Assume that
the radius of Mg2+ and O2- ion is 0.143 nm and 0.172 nm respectively. (Given that electronic
charge, e = 1.6 x 10-19 C and the permittivity of free space, Ԑ0 = 8.85 x 10-12 C2 N-1 m-2).
