ABSTRACT:
Function of Blast furnace cooling system is to cool the furnace shell
and prevent from the overheating and subsequent burn through. Cooling
system removes the excess heat generated in the blast furnace which is
otherwise loaded on the shell. Thus it prevents the increase of shell and
lining temperature and maintains the orientation of furnace shell. There are
two types of circuits in the cooling system named primary and secondary
circuit. Demineralised water flows through primary circuit and
Industrialised water flows through secondary circuit.
Secondary circuit is used to cool primary circuit. But due to some known
and unknown problems Cooling system is not working effectively. As
Demineralised water is free from minerals, so the problem is created due to
Industrialised water. The problems are:- Fouling, Scaling, Deposits, Bio
fouling. The impacts of these problems are:- (i) Reduced heat exchanger
efficiency, (ii) Heat exchanger plugging, (iii) Reduces Flow rate, (iv)
Reduced cooling tower efficiency, (v) Increases overall thermal resistance,
(vi) Increases Maintenance requirements, (vii) Increases cost. By the
application of some processes and some device these problems can be
overcome which will be described in the presentation.
