An affordable
Up North wedding destination
By Mardi Suhs A number of amenities are available to guests staying at the resort.
Brides searching for an affordable Up North wedding destination
are choosing Evergreen Resort in Cadillac, not just for its beautiful
location, but for the flexibility offered by dedicated staff members.
“Our staff has the willingness to go above and beyond to make the
wedding very personal,” said Phil Himes, GM. “Evergreen is one-stop.
If people come from out-of-town, they don’t have to drive after the
reception. We are all inclusive.”
Evergreen Resort offers couples an all-inclusive experience: a
place to hold the ceremony and reception, a place where guests can
stay and dine and also enjoy a round of golf.
Couples may choose between indoor and outdoor venues and
multiple wedding packages designed to meet their needs and
budgets. Plated dinner and buffet options are available. The couple

wedding hairstyle A wedding is a tough time to experience a bad hair day. Clothing
styles, time of day and weather all can dictate a wedding hairstyle,
but ultimately one of the most important factors in a wedding
hairstyle is finding a stylist who understands you and can exercise
your vision. A patient, understanding stylist who is open to viewing
different photographs and drawing inspiration from various places,
as well as running through a few trial styles, can help brides (and
grooms) look their best. In fact, trials are a must to ensure that a
chosen style will work with your hair texture. If you plan to get
your hair colored, professionals recommend doing so about three
weeks in advance of the big day so it looks natural and any potential
snafus can be remedied beforehand. Your stylist may suggest a light
trim prior to the wedding so that the ends are fresh and healthy.
And since you’re putting your faith in a qualified stylist, trust their
expertise and vision. Keep an open mind to their suggestions. You
may fall in love with one of the options you hadn’t considered.

Making dreams
come true for Brides
By Mardi Suhs
Attention Manistee brides
is the ultimate venue for your - an experienced wedding
wedding reception planner lives in the area and
she opened a consignment
bridal boutique downtown,
Manistee Bridal. Her goal
is to help brides make their
dreams come true on a
budget.
“This is something I take
pride in,” said Tracy Helder, who owns “Love Your Event” a company
that has helped create celebratory events throughout Michigan and
Indiana. I can take pressure off friends and family. I’ll take on your
day and all it brings. “I always try to stay way under budget. I do
a lot of shopping. I work with over 300 vendors so I can find the
deals and get it done under budget. It does make people very happy.
A whole package deal from dress to venue.”
In addition to her event planning business, last May Helder
opened Manistee Bridal, a consignment boutique in Manistee that
also features new and consigned wedding attire. Including some
designer gowns by Vera Wang, David Tutera and Mon Cheri.
“Manistee was lacking in formal wear, prom, wedding and special
occasion attire,” Helder said. “My goal was to bring affordable and
fashionable dresses to the area to help make every bride’s dream of a
special wedding become a reality, even on a tight budget.”
Because most brides are looking for a new gown to make their day
perfect. The store offers a wide selection of styles in bridal gowns
and veils, bridesmaid dresses, mother of the bride attire, a large
selection of flowergirl dresses including Rosebud (which includes
an American Girl Doll dress to match) and accessories.
“When brides come in, they just touch my heart,” she added. “I
do everything I can to make their dream day a reality.”
The store’s consignment inventory of prom dresses and formal
wear is for budget minded shoppers, but it also includes a wide-
range of formal and bridal wear. I now carry Colors Dress brand for
prom and homecoming.
“It’s a very eclectic mix of consignment with something for
everyone,” Helder said. “People who need a prom dress or evening
wear are looking for the affordability of consignment, a dress that
has been only worn once or twice.”
One-stop shop for everything. “It’s a Bling Thing” is an avenue
to donate your party decor and gently used chair covers, lights and
more for reuse.
Helder loves the glamour and excitement of event planning and
bridal services, but adding a consignment boutique with beautiful
dresses for beach weddings, ball gowns, and an inventory for all
seasons and budgets, just seemed like a very natural fit.

Frosting-free the latest trends in cakes

A new trend is taking hold both

in North America and on the
other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Cakes are being pared down so
that frosting and fondant cover-
ings are now nearly absent from
the confections.
They’re called “naked cakes,”
and these simplified desserts
showcase the texture of the cakes
and their fillings. According to
culinary experts, the idea for the
naked cake came from Christina
Tosi, owner of Momofuku Milk
Bar. It’s an award-winning bakery
with locations across the United States and
Canada. Now many other pastry chefs and
bakers are hopping on the naked cake band-
wagon, with the trend being highlighted by
the likes of Martha Stewart and the respected
wedding resource The Knot.
Just because these cakes may be short on
exterior buttercream doesn’t mean they fall
flat on flavor or visual appeal. Cakes can be
embellished with fresh blooms, gum paste-
molded flowers, edible pearls and gems, fresh
berries, and much more. The Knot notes many
naked cakes are garnished with flavors that are
included in the cake, such as chocolate chips,
crumbs, cookie dough, or candy sprinkles.
Couples who are stripping down their
weddings to include more basics and natural
effects may be drawn to these naked cakes.
They’re also an option for those who find
frosting, buttercream and fondant too sweet
for the palate. Naked cakes enable the interior
flavors to really shine.
