ADVERBS
English 9
Read through the short passage below. Carefully examine each sentence to identify all the adverbs within the
passage. Circle each adverb. Remember – NOT ALL adverbs end in “ly”!
Rena desperately wanted to get a part in her school’s production of The Diary of Anne Frank. She was
extremely nervous about auditioning, and she anxiously awaited the day for tryouts. To prepare herself, she
carefully scanned the play over the weekend. Later she went back and thoroughly studied the role of Anne.
Eventually, she began to understand how it must have felt to live in hiding for so long. She wondered if she
could accurately portray the girl who had once written the diary.
Rena arrived in the auditorium early. When she looked across the room, she saw other students quickly
thumbing through scripts. She eagerly watched the first group of students read a scene. Finally her turn came.
She really hoped that her understanding of the character would come through in her reading. As she began to
read the part, she relaxed slowly. She proudly enjoyed bringing the play to life.
