UNIT 6.

I RECOMMEND YOU TO REST

6.1. Introduction

Our next unit has the title I RECOMMEND YOU TO

REST. Once you have read the title it is easy to guess
what the unit is about, isn’t it? If not let’s start the
lesson!

As for the vocabulary we will learn and practice some

related to: outdoor activities, health and medicine.
Also we will listen to a conversation at the doctor’s.

As regards grammar I will explain the form and use

of the past modal verbs and the Reported speech. I
am sure you will improve you English doing all the
exercises proposed during the unit.

Once more at the end of the unit you will have more
games and the English World to learn curious and interesting things.

6.2. Listening

Listening Section. Let’s listen to these two conversations. Practice and improve
your vocabulary and expressions at the doctor’s.

6.2.1. Listening 1

Susan doesn’t feel very well since last week. She has headaches and last night
she had fever. I am calling for an appointment with a local doctor. The
receptionist answers the phone. Listen to the conversation we are keeping.

Receptionist: Good morning!

Matthew: Good morning. Can you give me an appointment to see the doctor,
please?

Receptionist: Yes, of course…How about tomorrow at 9 in the morning?

Matthew: It is quite urgent, can it be today in the afternoon?

Receptionist: Let me check, but I think it is not probable. Just a moment! I

have just remember that the doctor is available from four to half four. So, will
be fine at four for you?

Matthew: It’s great! Thank you!

Receptionist: What’s your name, please?

Matthew: The appointment is for my friend. Her name is Susan Adams.

Receptionist: Right! Dr. Smith will see your friend today at 4.

Matthew: Thank you.

6.2.2. Listening 2

Susan is into the doctor’s room. I will wait for her outside. I don’t like very
much doctors!

6.2 Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I recommend you to rest

Now listen to her telling the doctor what’s wrong with her. She doesn’t feel very
well.

Susan: Good afternoon.

Doctor: Good afternoon Ms. Adams. Please take a

sit and tell me, what’s the matter?

Susan: I haven’t felt right for several days, doctor.

I have splitting headaches and last night I had fever.
Also I was shivering all night in bed.

Doctor: That doesn’t sound good. Let’s have a look at you. Take your T-shirt
out and sit on this chair. Let’s see…Take a deep breath, again…Right! Ok. Let’s
see your throat. Open your mouth and say: ahhh… Right!

Susan: Ahhhhh…!

Doctor: Well, it is nothing serious. You have a cold and the beginning of flu.
You’ll have to take these pills. Here is the prescription. You should stay in bed
all day today, so I recommend you to rest as much as possible. But with these
pills you will be fine tomorrow.

Susan: Thanks doctor. I will follow your advice.

Doctor: Good bye and take care.

Susan: Good bye.

6.4. Grammar

This is the Grammar section of the topic. Here we will study the modal verbs
(past and passive modals), and the reported speech.

Let’s go!

6.4.1. Modal verbs

In this topic we will learn modal verbs in the past. They describe something
that was or wasn't done. They can be used in the passive voice.

(past modal verb) + have + been + past participle

Most past modals can be formed using “have” + the past participle of the verb
after the modal (should have, could have, etc.)

However, since modals express possibility, intention, obligation, etc., they do

not always indicate a definite tense. Therefore, when using past modals with
have, special meanings need to be considered. Look at these examples:

I should go to visit her. (I feel an obligation to go later)

I should have gone to visit her. (I didn’t go and i regret it)
Paul might take Sarah to the hospital. (It’s a future possibility)
Paul might have taken Sarah to the (He may be on this way there
hospital. now)
Paul would have taken Sarah to the
(He didn’t. He had an excuse)
hospital.
He had to have taken care of me. (Past obligation)
His wife must have been sick. (Past)

6.10 Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I recommend you to rest

6.4.2. Reported Speech

We use reported speech when we want to say or mention something that

someone has said before.

Example:

Direct speech Reported speech

She said that she always had an
“I always have an apple,” she said.
apple.

To mention what someone has said we use verbs like: explain, promise, say,
tell, suggest...But the most used are say and tell.

It is not needed to change the verbal tense when the verb of the main sentence
is in the Present.

Example: She says that she likes milk.

To introduce what has been said we use “that”, but sometimes it can be
omitted.

When we change a direct speech sentence to a reported speech one, we have

to take into account that the verb “goes back one tense”. Here we are the
changes:

DIRECT SPEECH REPORTED SPEECH

Present Simple Past Simple
I am sad. He said that he was sad.
Present Continuous Past Continuous
I am eating. She said that she was eating.
Past Simple Past Perfect
I slept. He said that he had slept.
Present Perfect Past Perfect
I have eaten. She said that she had eaten.
Present Perfect Continuous Past Perfect Continuous
I have been playing. He said that he had been playing.
Past Perfect Past Perfect
Future Simple conditional
I will go there. She said that she would go there.

Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I recommend you to rest 6.11

Future Perfect Simple conditional Perfect
He said that he would have been
I will have been well.
well.
Can Could
May Might
Will Would
Must Had to

There are also other elements that change when we change from direct to
reported speech, such as particles of place and time:

DIRECT REPORTED
Now At that moment, then
Tonight That night
Today That day
Last night The night before
This morning That morning
This week That week
Next week The following week
Next year The year after
Here There

Punctuation

Inverted commas (“) are only used at the beginning and at the end of direct
comments.

Example: “They are sad,” she added.

Pronouns

The 1st and 2nd person change to the 3rd.

Example: “I drive very fast,” said Sarah.

Sarah said that she drove very fast.

Reported speech questions

In questions we use the same grammatical order:

SUBJECT + VERB

The auxiliary verbs “do” or “did” are not needed.

6.12 Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I recommend you to rest

Examples:

DIRECT SPEECH REPORTED SPEECH

He asked me where Susan and
“Where do Susan and Matthew go?” Matthew went.

Reporting verbs

Here we are reporting verbs in categories of sentence structure. The most

common are tell and say, but there are more we can use.

Verb Verb +object Verb

Verb Verb
+object Verb +gerund +preposition +preposition
+infinitive +(that)
+infinitive +gerund +gerund
Advise Agree Admit Deny Accuse Apologize
Encourage Decide Deny Recommend Blame
Invite Offer Explain

Warm Refuse Promise

Examples:
He offered to give her a present.

6.5. Reading

Susan has flu. The doctor advised her to rest in bed just one day but she is
still in bed two and she doesn’t want to get up. I told her that is bad for her to
be in bed long time. For that reason I have read this article to her.

6.5.1. Text

Bed rest is bad for you

Ever noticed how you seem to take longer to get over an illness if you take to
your bed for a few days instead of struggling on? The reason, according to the
leading American health magazine “Prevention,” is that a whole range of bodily
functions begin to weaken after as short a time as one day in bed.

Muscle tissue starts to break down, robbing the body of important minerals
and leading to substantial weakness in just a few days; bones start to break
down and lose calcium; the body is unable to use food efficiently; heart and
blood vessels get weak after a couple of days, which can lead to rise in pulse
rate and a drop in blood volume; joint stiffness and constipation are also
common.

“Prolonged bed rest is not to be taken lightly,” says Doctor Benjamin Natelson,
professor of neurosciences at New Jersey Medical School. And that’s why
doctors these days make every effort to get patients up and moving as soon
as possible after heart attacks and operations.

6.8. English World

We arrived in San Francisco three days ago. Susan has been ill two days, but
now that she is better we have decided to visit San Francisco. A lovely city,
believe me! Listen to Susan talking about it.

San Francisco

Do you know that the City and County of San

Francisco is the fourth most famous city in
California and the 13th most famousous city
in the United States?

Today, San Francisco is a popular

international tourist destination well known
for its chilly summer fog, its rolling hills,
Victorian and modern architecture and its
populous landmarks, including the Golden
Gate Bridge, the cable cars, and Chinatown.

It is also a very beautiful city with many different avenues for enjoyment. We
rode the BART into the city and it was not complicated.

Everyone was very nice in the city and helped us when we didn’t know where
we were.

These days the weather has been beautiful, but foggy. That is something that
we knew it was going to happen.

All in all, it is a very nice place to visit. I enjoy eating and here there are lots
of good places to eat.

We went to Pier 39. It is San Francisco's Premier Bay Attraction, a festival

marketplace with different shops and restaurants serving fresh seafood,
California cuisine, and it is not very expensive.

From here you can see postcard views of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges,
Alcatraz, Angel Island and the City skyline. Pier 39 is located two blocks east
of Fisherman's Wharf, at Beach Street and The Embarcadero. There's a

Inglés Intermedio Alto (B2). I recommend you to rest 6.27

multitude of fun with attractions and many sea lions, located at K-Dock. There
are lovely animals.

Fisherman's Wharf

I would like to talk about the Fisherman's Wharf. It is a neighborhood and

popular tourist attraction in San Francisco. It is best known for being the
location of Pier 39, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

The Wharf consists of a long, coast side row of seafood restaurants, street
vendors, souvenir stores, and beautiful ocean scenery. Fisherman's Wharf was
originally a major fishing pier, and although the fishing industry is still alive
today, the main focus of this specific coastal area is its historic tourist
attractions. Ferry rides are offered for those who would like to visit Marin
County.

I have to say that I love the Wharf. It is best to plan to visit on a weekday,
when there are less people. We went to visit it on Monday and it was cool! That
day we visited the barking sea lions at Pier 39.

Just to say that it is a pretty cool place and if you travel to the city you should
probably stop by at least just to say you've seen it. And don’t forget to try the
fish sandwiches there. They are excellent!
