1.

Limiting heights are computed in accordance with CAN/CSA-S136-12 « North American specification
for the design of cold-formed steel structural members ».
2. Steel shall meet the requirements of CAN/CSA-S136-12 with a minimum yield strength of 33 ksi (228
MPa). The modulus of elasticity considered is 29 500 ksi (203 395 MPa).
3. The increase in yield strength from the cold work of forming is conservatively neglected.
4. Perforations are assumed to be located at mid-depth and spaced at a minimum of 24 in (610 mm)
from centre to centre. The distance from the centerline of the last perforation to the end of a stud is
assumed to be 12 in (305 mm) minimum.
5. The deflection inertia used to compute the limiting heights includes the effects of local buckling at
the stress level resulting from specified live loads (approx. 0.6Fy).
6. Limiting heights are limited by the end shear, mid-span moment at factored loads and the allowable
deflection at service loads. The factored shear resistance and the factored bending resistance are
based on the perforated section. Sheating providing full lateral support on both sides of the studs is
assumed. The sheatings are to have adequate durability, strength and rigidity to prevent the studs
from buckling laterally and to resist the torsional component of loads not applied through the shear
centre.
In addition to the sheating requirements outlined above, provide bridging at 48 in (1 219 mm) from
centre to centre, or less, in order to align members and to provide the necessary structural integrity
during construction and in the completed structure. Design the bridging to prevent stud rotation
and translation about minor the minor axis.
7. The stud with a depth of 6 in (152.4 mm) has a ratio h/t higher than the limit of 200 required by
CSA-S136 for the web width-to-thickness limitations. This stud need to be used with a sheating
providing full lateral support on both sides.
