CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Extracurricular activities used to describe extra activities that can be done by the

students in a school but that are not part of the regular schedule of classes. Engaging

yourself in new activities with new people is a fun way to challenge yourself. You get to

explore your physical, creative, social, political and career interests with like-minded

people.

In school, not only academics is important you might as well involve yourself in

extracurricular activities that will help in building self-esteem and team work. Does

engaging in extracurricular activities might be a distraction? Yes, it might be because

sometimes we put too much attention on something and just focus on that thing. This is

why for some student extracurricular activities is a distraction. Remember, it’s important

to keep a balance between schoolwork and extracurricular activities. As they said, “Too

much of everything is not good.” Balancing this both will not only help you in school

rather it will help you in the future.

Background of the Study

Involving in extracurricular activities have benefits and disadvantages on Grade 7

students. On others they tend to balance their time in academics and extracurricular

activities while others consider this a distraction. They tend to focus on one thing. Based

on their experience we get to know their perspective that will help in shaping the key of

how can they manage their academics and extracurricular activities together.

Review of Related Studies

Extracurricular activities have been shown to both help and hinder academic

performance.

2|Page
The type of extracurricular activity and the amount of time spent in participating in

extracurricular activity might determine whether it has negative and positive effect.

Music, parental involvement, sports—all of these have an influence on how children

perform academically. The way children choose to spend their free time can affect their

school performance; it is not simply traditional in-class instruction that impacts academic

achievement. “A study by the U. S. Department of Education revealed that students who

participate in co-curricular activities are three times more likely to have a grade point

average of 3.0 or better” than students who do not participate in co-curricular activities

(Stephens & Schaben, 2002, para. 4). In addition to co-curricular or extracurricular

activities, “analyses revealed that regardless of students’ background and prior

achievement, various parenting, volunteering, and home learning activities positively

influenced student grades” (Simon, 2001, para. 1). Numerous studies have examined the

factors influencing students’ academic achievement, and many activities were found to

have a significant influence.

An extracurricular activity is not always a sport it can also include clubs and

organizations as well as cheerleading, dance, band and the arts. Even though remaining

active is beneficial for a child overall growth and development too much of it is not good

especially when it relates to his/her social, emotional and educational well-being. The

journals, articles and reviews take pro and con positions as it relates to childrens

participation in extracurricular activities. The information in the readings consists of an

array of ages from elementary through high school that gives more of a perspective view

on the topic. Therefore, the final analysis whether extracurricular activities have an effect

on the academic performance of students is determined not only by a case study, model,

3|Page
survey or questionnaire but also whether the extracurricular activity is a school or non-

school based activity, the amount of time spent on the activity, the age of the children and

the socio-economical level of the students. Therefore, there are different variables that

determine whether extracurricular activities affect the academic performance of students.

Extracurricular activities are activities that students participate in that do not fall into the

realm of normal curriculum of schools. They are found in all levels of our schools. There

are many forms of extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, governance, student

newspaper, music, art, and drama. Extracurricular activities are totally voluntary so

students that do not want to participate in them do not have to. Lunen burg states in his

article that “Extracurricular activities serve the same goals and functions as the required

and elective courses in the curriculum. However, they provide experiences that are not

included in formal courses of study. They allow students to apply the knowledge that

they have learned in other classes and acquire concepts of democratic life.”(2010, 2)

Extracurricular activities have many positive effects on education. The positive effects

that extracurricular activities have on students are behavior, better grades, school

completion, positive aspects to become successful adults, and a social aspect.

Researchers found the activity a child participates in does not matter as long as the

child gets involved and stays involved. While it’s been shown that children in the

performance arts and music area have higher levels of school involvement, Dr. Hughes

added, “if you’re looking at children’s change in school involvement and achievement, it

is kids who are in athletics and sports that are most likely to benefit in terms of their

being engaged in or part of a peer group that will support their academic achievement.”

4|Page
Using the theoretical framework of risk and resiliency, the study estimated the

contribution of five school-related delinquencies (behavior problems, schoolwork

problems, out-of-school suspension, in-school suspension and grade retention) and seven

extracurricular activities (arts, sports, clubs, tutoring, volunteering, religious involvement

and scouts) on the report card grades of students. An adolescent sample (N = 2070) from

the US National Household Education Survey was examined. A three-step hierarchical

multiple regression found that the protective effects of extracurricular activities remained

predictive of better grades, even after controlling for the risks of school-related

delinquencies. The extracurricular activity of arts best predicted better grades, but the

school-related delinquency of schoolwork problems best predicted worse grades. The

discussion focuses on the implications of increasing resilience by promoting

extracurricular involvement and combating the risk of school delinquencies.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effects of extracurricular activity on grade 7

students’ academic performance.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following question:

A. Recommendation on how students can balance their time in academics and ECA.

B. Are the Grade 7 students aware on the effects of ECA in their academic

performance?

C. What are the effects of extracurricular activities in academic performance?

5|Page
Research Hypothesis

Extracurricular activity participation will have a positive effect on students

academic performance and increase the likelihood of students to persist through

graduation. Students involved in an ECA will be more likely to improve their academics

and communication.

Assumptions

This research assumes that:

1. The respondents were capable enough to answer the instrument administered;

2. The respondents were mentally and emotionally stable when they answered

the questionnaire;

3. The respondents were honest in answering the instrument administered;

4. The respondents’ answers were kept confidential;

5. The questionnaire will give the information needed for the research.

Importance of the Study

The finding of this research will reflect upon the benefit of students, school and this

study add to the body of information regarding the value of extracurricular activities. It

provides educators and parents with information to assist their high school students in

making more informed choices in their high school programs. Especially now we are

implementing the K-12 Program exposing students on extracurricular activities together

6|Page
with their academic excellence might boost his/her self-esteem and develop one’s talent

and potentials. This is not the only benefit but it will also uncover the things to improve

the strategy of school on how to develop students.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study is focused on the effects of extracurricular activities on Grade 7

students. The consultation of this study revolves on the effects of extracurricular

activities Grade 7 whether its beneficial or distraction. The study is delimited only on

Grade 7 student of Clarice Angels School. It only seeks to know the outgrowth of

extracurricular activities on Grade 7 students. It is not the scope of research to ask grades

4 to 6 and grades 8 to 10.

Definition of Terms

Extracurricular (ECA) or Extra Academic Activity (EAA) – activity that fall outside

the realm of the normal curriculum of school or university education, performed

by students.

High school - a school that typically comprises grades 9 through 12, attended after

primary school or middle school.

7|Page
K to 12 Program - covers Kindergarten and 12 years of Basic Education [Six (6) years

of primary education, Four (4) years of Junior High School, and Two (2) years of Senior

High School (SHS)] to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop

lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills

development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Potential - having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the

future.

Self-esteem - reflects a person's overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own

worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Method of Research

The descriptive survey method of research was used in this study wherein the

study is focused on the effects of extracurricular activities on student academic

excellence with the questionnaire as the main instrument in attaining the required data

from the respondents.

The method of research which concerns itself with the present phenomena

in terms of conditions, practices beliefs, processes, relationships or trends invariably is

termed as “descriptive survey study”. According to Dr. Y.P. Aggarwal (2008) descriptive

research is devoted to the gathering of information about prevailing conditions or

situations for the purpose of description and interpretation. This type of research method

is not simply amassing and tabulating facts but includes proper analyses, interpretation,

comparisons, identification of trends and relationships.

Sources of Data

For the study purpose both primary and secondary data are used in order to come

up with accurate and objective findings. The primary data is collected from the grade 7

students. The secondary data is collected from books and articles from computer. The

primary and secondary data have been collected to cover every aspect of the study.

9|Page
Primary data is a term for data collected at source. This type of information is

obtained directly from first hand resources by means of surveys, observations and

experimentation and not subjected to any processing or manipulation.

Secondary data it refers to the data collected by someone other than the user i.e.

the data is already available and analyzed by someone else. Common sources of

secondary data include various published or unpublished data, books, magazines,

newspaper, trade journals etc.

Respondents and Locale of the Study

This study was conducted at Clarice Angels School located at Salay, Mangaldan,

Pangasinan. It was founded in 2001 by Dr. Florentina A. Manongdo and Dr. Edna N.

Peralta.

The respondents of this study were the thirty selected grade 7 students for the S.Y.

2017-2018 at Clarice Angels School

Preparation and Validation of the Research Instrument

To determine the effects of extracurricular activity on academic excellence of

Grade 7 students the researcher used the method of survey by handing out questionnaires

to the respondents and that way information can be extracted for the research.

The reliability and validity of the research instrument was measured by having it

pre-tested to the grade 10 students of Clarice Angels School. Five (5) students were asked

10 | P a g e
to answer the questionnaires and after determining that the instrument was valid and

reliable, the researcher started conducting the study.

Procedure in Administering the Instrument

The researcher first sought the approbation of the high school principal of Clarice

Angels School, Mrs. Edna Peralta in order to conduct a survey in their department and

permission to the respective advisers of grade 7 students. Questionnaires were distributed

to the 30 selected grade 7 respondents upon approval endorsement of the high school

principal. The respondents were given 10 minutes to accomplish the questionnaires.

Method of Data Analysis and Interpretation

The percentage method was used to analyze the data gathered. The Formula is:

Formula of the weighted mean:

1. Multiply the numbers in your data set by the weights.

2. Add the results up.

3. Divide it to the total of your respondents.

11 | P a g e
Example:

Legend

Always – 3 Sometimes – 2 Never -1

(Number of respondents that answered always × the legend)

(15 x 3) + (7 x 2) + (8 x 1)

45 + 14 + 8

= 67 ÷ 30

Weighted mean = 2.23

Interaction was also used to analyze the relationship between the student

profile and the delinquent behavior of students. Microsoft Excel was used to compute the

correlation of the two variables.

SCALE: LEGEND:

N = 0 – 0.99 N = never

S = 1.0 – 1.99 S = sometimes

A = 2.0 – 2.99 A = always

CHAPTER IV

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary

Of the 30 students in grade 7, majority of the effects of extracurricular activities on

their academic excellence were they tend to balance their time both in academics and

extracurricular activities, it broaden their knowledge and inspired when joining these

activities. The effects were gathered by doing a survey. Lastly, extracurricular activity

plays a vital role in child’s growth it allow students to apply the knowledge that they have

learned and acquire concepts of democratic life and develops the ability of the

individuality.

Conclusions

Now that enough information were gathered, the researcher conclude that the effects

of Extracurricular Activities on Academic Excellence of Grade 7 students:

1. The researcher conclude that the students who joined extracurricular

activities improve the practical ability of individual.

2. The researcher conclude that the students who joined these

extracurricular activities are inspired.

18 | P a g e
3. The researcher concluded that the students who tend to balance their

academic excellence and extracurricular activities get higher grades

and improve someone’s ability and skills.

Finally, the effects of extracurricular activities on academic excellence of Grade 7

students are mostly connected to positive things. However, as an individual we perceive

things in different and wonderful ways.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusion made the following recommendations were

provided by the researchers:

1. Interested – Gain student interest to assist in separation from previous norms.

Extracurricular activities has many promotable points of interest for potential and

current students. Making students more aware of the ECA offered, especially

those on main campus, will increase interest and also the simulation of a learning

community.

2. Involved – Increasing student involvement in ECA increases ease of transition.

3. Invested – Integrated students will feel a stronger sense of connection,

becoming invested in the institution and continuing to degree completion. This

study has shown that overall student perceptions of the program are very positive.

Also, the Clarice Angels School must continue its investment in students which

increases connectedness and positively impacts student retention and persistence.
