Executive Summary
The main aim of this report is to perform the project critical analysis and analyze the success or
failure of the project Optus Stadium in Perth Begin in June 2013. The development of Optus
stadium is completed within 54 months in December 2017. The work of the project is to install
and fix the 60,000 seats multi-purpose venue. Also, this can go from the centerpiece permanently
for the development of the Burswood Peninsula at Swan Rive. After the completion of the
project, this becomes the most support and entertaining venue in pert and will be the third-largest
stadium in Australia. According to Australian media or from some internet sources (Project
Definition Plan, n.d.). Optus Stadium, Ads and daily or weekly newsletter and from the inside
source to Stadium is limited during the construction and indicate the project achieved its success.

The report can discuss several factors along with some considerations to determine project
success and failure. The report analyzed the impact and influence of stakeholder during the
project. However, the success will be achieved in this project will be just because of effective
communication between the project stakeholders (Kerzner, 2017). The report is comprised of
different section in which stakeholder analysis, critical analysis is performed to analyze all
critical factor that why Optus stadium develops can accomplish success. The several factors are
discussed in the report which contributes to the project success. The factors include early risk
identification, completing project within time, budget and resources assigned. The final section
evaluates and recommends the project improvement in future.

3
Introduction
The project development cost will be around $700 Million which consist of overall stadium
construction including seat installation, and other related work needed. The project was
completed with fifty-four months to achieve sustainable advantage and goal to generate the high
revenue and profit from the customer and make the events for the peoples in Perth more
enjoyable.

The main objectives of the project are to complete the project within the deadline, budget, in a
safer manner and according to the requirement, quality standards having little impact on the pert
environment. However, the objectives of the plan are to meet the customer or client and demands
(Project Definition Plan, n.d.). The Optus stadium consists of 60,000 seats and the court as well
as full proof security system installed in the stadium to prevent any kind of mischievous
activities.

4
Stakeholder Analysis
The key stakeholders of Optus Stadium project are given stakeholder register in Appendix 1. The
stakeholders have different roles and responsibilities in the project team that is clearly defined
and enable them to understand their duties and how they can communicate with each other. The
main source of project success in this project is stakeholders as they have greater impact and
influence in the project. Also, the stakeholders have clear information about the project issues
and the team hire for the project have strong expertise in the requirement gathering and
implementing change in the organization, business or in a company. Also, each team member of
the project is chosen according to their expertise, skills, experience, and knowledge and project
tasks or activities are assigned to them according to their expertise to accomplish project goals
and objectives. Stakeholder engagement should be maximum in the project to achieve success
because without engagement project may lead towards the failure (Hagan, 2010). This was due
to if a client is not engaged in a project then the project cannot review timely to him and ensure
that project team will be on the track and work is done or completed according to the
requirement. If a project is reviewed at the end and there will be need of modification and
changes then the project may extra cost and may be late because of the extra work which may
sometime cause the project termination so, in this situation, stakeholders engagement claim will
be very high.

5
Optus Stadium Project Management
The project is managed by implementing a project management plan which is prepared by the
project manager. With the help of the project management plan, a project manager can estimate
time budget and resources and follow them to achieve project strategic goals and objectives. The
project manager of Optus stadium is highly motivated and encourages he doesn't ask and force or
coerce his team to do but just motivate and encourage and this can help him to improve and
enhance the productivity in the project. Also, the main focus of the project manager is
communication and careful planning. There are different challenges face during the development
which impacts the initiation phase (Kerzner, 2017). These challenges cause the scope creep
because they are not planning in the project before. But the project manager has used the project
management methodology so that all changes and challenges are accommodated during the
project without any interruption in the progress and performance.

6
Critical Analysis
The critical factors which help the project to achieve are a success was to identify the risk at an
early stage, project completion within the assigned budget, time and resources as well as
according to plan and effective stakeholder management. Stakeholder management plays a vital
role in every project to accomplish success. Stakeholder has great influence and high impact on
the project but both of the aspects required management proactively (Westland, 2007). Another
key to success is that they should be kept informed at every stage of the project to avoid conflict
as the conflict may lead towards the failure in the project.

Risk of the project is identified before the project begin because in a project there are some
known and unknown risk which impact and cause the program performance and progress and
interrupt them. So, for the Optus Stadium project, the risk register (Appendix 2) is prepared
before June 2011. This can ensure the project success because all risks are minimized before the
project begins and risk management allows to monitor and control risk during the project as they
can also occur during the project can cause the interruption (Zanthus, 2019). Also, the risk
avoidance approach is followed to eliminate the risk by considering different mitigation
strategies.

The other main factor to accomplish project success is completing the project on time. As the
project is completed within the deadline which ensures the project success. For effective and
efficient time management, time table is prepared using major WBS items in which the project is
split into major task and deadline is assigned to them (Borghese, 2012). So, project manager
adopts the tracking techniques to track the project tasks and activities by comparing actual value
with an estimated value to calculate the variance and corrective actions should be taken if a
variance is negative.

Communication plays vital roles in the project success so considering this project manager has
implemented the communication management plan or communication matrix and charts is
prepared to handle the communication (Appendix 3) where he has managed the communication
between the project stakeholders. Communication management can avoid all type of conflict
between the stakeholder and everyone should be given a chance to present the opinion s and idea
and each of them is regarded and appreciated. Also, the last factor which allows the project team

7
to achieve success is using project management methodology and cost management approach
which allow the project team to complete project under budget while on other methodology help
to accommodate any kind of changes occurring during the project development without any
interruption in the project progress and delay (Bunnel, 2018). The agile methodology (Appendix
4) is used in the project development as this support maximum involvement of the stakeholders
and accommodates any kind of changes in requirements and scope without any delay and
increase in project cost.

Conclusion and Recommendations
Project management can be difficult and scary if you are not applying project management
techniques, to make your project successful you have to apply project management techniques.
And the first technique in for the success of a project is defining scope and objectives, in which
boundaries are defined and understood who your stakeholders are, what you have to achieve,
what their need is, what they want from you. After making a scope and objective list you review
them to your stakeholders to see if they agree. Then after this define deliverable is the next step.
In which you define what your deliverables will be what you are going to give at the end of the
project, key stakeholders must review and agree to the deliverables, so they know what they
want. after this, there is a most important phase that is planning in which project manager
decides which people, resources and what will be the budget for the completion of the project.
The project manager must define the activities that he is going to use in the project, he must
estimate budget and time for every activity and dependencies between activities (Bunnel, 2018).
Setting milestones and having critical dates for the project. After this, you have to get key
stakeholders to review the plan. After this, you must follow communication.

Communications are ineffective if they are not effectively communicated between the teams.
Every team member must know his duties what he is supposed to do and how. And after this
another step that is reporting and tracking the project. When your project is started and is in
progress then you must track and compare the actual progress state with the planned progress
state and must get a progress report from every team member. And should note variations
between cost, scope, and schedule. After this, you need another practice to be adopted for the
successful completion of the project and that is change management changes can become at any
point of the project and you should know how to manage changes otherwise those changes can
disrupt your cost, your scope, your schedule and so many such other things (Zanthus, 2019).
Along with this the most important reason for the failure of a project that is lacking risk
management in your projects, risk management cannot be skipped and one must estimate they
expected risks and must be ready to overcome these risks. These practices won’t ensure that your
project will be successful but they increase the chances of success. Here are some
recommendations that will increase the chances of a project to be more successful.

 Develop a risk response team.

9
 Always make sure all the stakeholders understand the requirements. They must know the
scope of the
 project, project deliverables, project goals, and benefits. They must know about success
criteria
 and quality matrices. And most important risk and issues linked or associated with the
project.
 Develop and formalize project management roles.
 Adopt advanced and better scheduling techniques for technical work.
 Define and evaluate quality standards before, after and throughout the project.
