With the desire to motivate the grade five pupils in learning Science , this study looked
into the effect of using video presentation as motivation in the learning process. The
“Students Perspectives Sheet” and Interview are used to gather students’ perceptions
about how the video presentation motivated them and how much learning was retained.
Before the intervention was done, the pupils were asks on how they are motivated in the
science subject. At the start of the intervention, the pupils were then exposed to varied
video presentation before the discussion of the concept. Results revealed that the pupils
were eager to attend the Science subject and increased the interaction among students.
The findings suggest that video presentation is effective as it can help increase the
performance of the grade five pupils in Science 5.

Introduction:
“Video based materials help motivate students and create a distinctive context for
their learning experience.” (A. D. Greenberg, et al., 2012)

Motivation affects learning. As defined by Romando (2007) , motivation is an

internal drive that activates behavior and gives it direction. Shabait (2010) believed that

student motivation has to do with students’ desire to participate in the learning process. It

is concerned on the reasons or goals that underlie their involvement in academic

activities.”

Motivation provides the enjoyment and satisfaction on the pupils’ learning

experiences. It helps them complete the task with enthusiasm. It also enhances cognitive

processing. Pupils are more likely to pay attention and easily understand the concept

when they are interested on the experience.

Since the dawn of technology age, computers and other forms of instructional media

have been proven to be the most multifaceted teaching aids available and to help to catch

the attention of the pupils. Then, technologies should be employed in the teaching.

Technology supports learning and helps in developing knowledge, wherein,

integration is the use of technology to enhance, reiterate, present, and assess how students

understand the lesson (Edutopia, 2005). Moreover, this supports both teaching and

learning.

Video presentation is one of the instructional media that has the advantage of

presenting abstract ideas in a realistic context which helps the pupils grasp the abstract

ideas more easily and retain the concept longer.

Mendoza, Gia Lenn et.al, (2014) found out on the study entitled, “Effectiveness of

Video Presentation to Students Learning” , that Video-based materials boost students’

creativity and cooperation. The access to video can help motivate students and create a

distinctive context for their learning experience.

In Science 5 under the K-12 curriculum, learners are expected to develop the

necessary competencies which will enable them to easily understand the topics with

interest. The topics in the the Fourth Quarter involves on the “Processes that Shape the

Earth’s Surface”. Since the topics are abstract concepts, learners are sensed to better gain

knowledge and skills with the use of video presentation as motivation in learning.

Based on the teacher’s daily observations, most of those who achieve less in the

First,Second and Third Grading period for S.Y. 2016-2017 in Science 5 are those who are

behaviorally unmotivated: they are less participative and are less encouraged to

participate in the given activities.

With the use of technology like video presentation in the classroom, it resulted to

the increased of interaction among students. The review of the lessons become easier. The

retrieval of the lesson is faster than than the use of traditional paper and pencil

instruction.

This study is geared towards the welfare of the students and teachers through video

presentations because with motivation, there is attention. Thus, the researcher believed
that the video presentation can help increase the performance of the grade five pupils in

Science 5.

Statement of the Problem

This study assessed the perception of the Grade V pupils on the used of Video
Presentation as Motivation in Teaching Science at Pagsabungan Elementary School ,
Pagsabungan , Mandaue City , School Year 2016-2017 as it seeks to improve the
performance of the grade five pupils.
Specifically, the researcher would have the following queries answered:

1. What are the perceptions of the Grade V pupils on attending the science subject
before the intervention was implemented?
2. What are perceptions of the Grade V Pupils on attending the science subject after
the intervention was implemented ?
3. Is there an improvement in the pupil’s perception on attending the science class
when video presentation are used in the lesson?

Significance of the Study

The following will be benefited from this study:

Teachers. The study is very important to the teacher. Through this, her class will be an

interactive and motivating class to be attended and participated by a number of learners.

Moreover, she would not stress herself with intervention activities that will help her

students as the used of video presentations are interactive;

Students. The study is very important to the learners so promotion to the next grade level

will not be impossible. In addition to that, they will be able to undertake Science 5 tasks

with ease and familiarity.

School Administrators. The findings in this study will help the administrator improve

the curriculum to enrich the functional role of ICT in the integration of teaching-learning

process.
Department of Education (DepEd). The study is very important to the school as it is a

stronghold of the Department of Education in the implementation of the integration of

ICT in the teaching-learning process.

Parents. The study is very important to parents as they will be assured that their students

are in school learning something. With this, they will gain much more enthusiasm to

support their children academically and in other aspects.

Researchers. The study will aid them as basis to their future studies.

Methodology
This is a qualitative study which aims to develop the motivational aspect of the grade
5 pupils in learning Science for the 4 th grading period. The action research is conducted
at Pagsabungan Elementary School, Pagsabungan Mandaue City. The school is a regular
learning institution where kindergarten until grade six pupils are sheltered.
The research respondents are 42 Grade 5 Verity pupils under the Science class of Ms.
Charlene M. Ypil.
Before the intervention was done, the 50% of grade 5 pupils were asks on how they
are motivated in the science subject using the Students Perspective Sheet structured by
the teacher. At the start of the intervention, the pupils were then exposed to varied video
presentation before the discussion of the concept. The used of technology like the video
presentations is the treatment given.
After the intervention, the teacher asks the 50% of the pupils’ perception using the
“Students Perspective Sheet”. It contains three statements to be filled in with information
which seeks to give the students perception on the activity and whether they liked the
video presentation.
The results were tabulated, analyzed and discussed.
Results and Discussion:

This action research is focused only on the perception of the motivational aspect of the
grade five pupils in attending Science class before and after the intervention was done.
Table 1 reflects the perception of the grade pupils before and after the intervention was done.
