A trumpet is a blown musical
instrument commonly used
in classical and jazz ensembles. The
trumpet group contains the instruments
with the highest register in
the brass family.
Trumpets are used in art music styles, for
instance in orchestras, concert bands,
and jazz ensembles, as well as in popular
music.

Discipline is important in learning instrument. To
achieve good blowing skills in trumpet, student
must have a routine; exercises that will develop
techniques to be used in producing good sound.

The role of a trumpet player in any
ensemble is diverse and demanding.
Careful attention must be taken at all
times to prepare for the difficulties and
challenges that arise on a daily basis,
both as a trumpeter and as a musician.
This compendium is designed to enable
the student to develop confidence in his
or her abilities as a musician, both in the
ensemble and/or solo.

patterns and arpeggios on playing trumpet
I. Objectives
1. Familiarizing proper fingering to
produce notes on trumpet.
2. Learn to play scale; simple 5-note scale
to complete major scale and 12
chromatic tones.
3. Introduce simple arpeggios and
applications.

V. Synthesis
Having good foundation on playing
trumpet is having discipline in doing
routine and exercises, applying all
necessary preparation to produce good
sound and good intonation.
Learning and mastering scales and
arpeggios will lead to smooth playing and
prepare the student to more technical
plays.
VI. Evaluation
1. Individually, students will perform
a major scale and an arpeggio on
a trumpet (C major/Bb Concert
pitch).
2. Practical assessment by teacher
on proper handling, posture, and
technique.

V. Synthesis
Of the many types of exercises for
technique and facility on the trumpet, the
best exercise for ear training is
transposition. The purpose of
transposition is to address the student’s
overall musicianship by developing the
mind and ear.
A note is usually cracked when the note is
not heard prior to it being sounded.
Consistent practice of transposition will
greatly reduce the chances of cracking or
splitting notes because it trains their ears
to be more active in the process of
reading and hearing music.
