countries.

With the available technology, you can carry your office and library in your notebook computer or Ipad. A whole world
has moved inside these electronic devices. Technology can be a great time waster or great time saver, it depends on

industrial complex every year. An impressive array of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons are waiting to be
dropped on our heads. What has been produced at great cost and is being stored with great care, is certainly meant
for use and will be used one day.

But why are we so hell-bent on killing each other? Why is our species so violence-prone? To answer these questions
we would do well to think about our exploitation and slaughter of animals and its effect on human civilization. Could it
be that we oppress and kill each other so readily because our abuse and slaughter of animals has desensitized us to
the suffering and death of others? An ancient Chinese verse so rightly puts it, “For hundreds of thousands of years
the stew in the pot has brewed hatred and resentment that is difficult to stop. If you wish to know why there are
disasters of armies and weapons in the world, listen to the piteous cries from the slaughterhouse at midnight.” Agnes
Ryan concurs, “Wars will never cease while men still kill other animals for food, for to turn any living creature into a
roast, a steak, a chop, or any other type of ‘meat’ takes the same kind of violence, the same kind of bloodshed, and
the same kind of mental processes required to change a living man into a dead soldier.”

Peace will be possible only if we live and let others live.

A young couple moved into the house next to a church compound. A few days later, the pastor’s wife called the
pastor into the kitchen. She was peering out the window. “Look at our neighbor hanging the wash out on the line.
That laundry is still dirty! She must be a newlywed who doesn’t know how to wash clothes properly. Maybe she’s not
using enough laundry soap.”

The pastor urged his wife not to say anything, but the next week, sure enough, the neighbor’s dirty laundry hung on
the line again. And again the following week. Every time the pastor’s wife peered out the window, she saw her
neighbor’s dirty laundry hanging on the clothesline.

Then, one morning as she scurried around getting breakfast, the pastor’s wife exclaimed, “Look! She finally got the
clothes clean! I wonder who helped her?” The pastor smiled and said, “Honey, no one helped her. I just got up early
this morning and cleaned our windows!”
This famous story has a profound message. We need to rinse our mind and intellect in the light of transcendental
knowledge. In Vedic terminology this is known as ‘cheto darpana marjanam’, cleansing the mirror of heart and soul.

Lost Time Is Never Found

Time needs your tender loving care because it is a unique, irreplaceable resource. Taking it for granted would be
your undoing.

Time is not found on supermarkets shelves in case you need an extra supply. There are no vending machines even.
There is no place where you can buy or hire extra time. Neither you can pull it out from the last year’s stock. As the
Sun sets on the horizon, your day is gone and as the Sun rises in the east, your night is gone. Gone means gone for
ever, never to return. There are many things in life which go and come back but time is not one of those.

When something is in short supply, you look for a substitute. Everything in the world has a substitute except time.
Nothing can

replace time or take its place. Time is a universal ingredient. Everything requires time. Here again there are no
exceptions, no shortcuts. Everything is produced in time, stays in time and perishes in time.

Time is cruel. It shows no mercy. When time is up, it’s up.

A poet says,

This thing all things devours

Birds, beasts, trees, flowers

Gnaws iron, bites steel,

Grinds hard stones to meal,

Slays king, ruins town,

A Manifesto For A Slaughter-free Civilization
We are living in violent times and there is no disputing this fact. Wars are raging around the globe. There is war within
the family, in the form of discontent, arguments, separation, and divorce; war in the community in the form of gang
wars, crime, robberies, murders, and rape; there is internal war going on in almost half of the countries in the world.
Then there are industrial and economic rivalries as well as international wars on terrorism.

This era of war is entering a new phase, in which the great divisions among humankind and the dominating source of
international conflict will be cultural. Divisions between civilizations are deepening and increasing in importance. From
Yugoslavia to the Middle East to Central Asia, the fault lines of civilizations are the battle lines of the future. Then
there are weapons of mass destruction that can wipe out life in a matter of hours.

If you believe in the principle of cause and effect, there must be a cause for this senseless violence. We are
becoming victims of war because we are raging a war on non-human life forms. What goes around comes around. As
you sow so shall you reap. We are being slaughtered by sophisticated weaponry as we slaughter animals in state of
the art slaughterhouses.

Plutarch offers an insight into the evolution of wars, “At the beginning it was some wild and harmful animal that was
eaten, then a bird or fish that had its flesh torn. And so when our murderous instincts had tasted blood and grew
practised on wild animals, they advanced to the labouri`ng ox and the well-behaved sheep and the housewarding
cock; thus, little by little giving a hard edge to our insatiable appetite, we have advanced to wars and the slaughter
and murder of human beings.”

According to author Cynthia Hodges, cruelty to animals and violence towards people have something in common:
both types of victims are living beings, feel pain, experience distress, and may die from their injuries. Until recently,
however, violence towards animals had been considered to be unrelated to violence towards children and the elderly,
and other forms of violence. A correlation has now been established between animal abuse, family violence, and
other forms of community violence. A growing body of research indicates that people who commit acts of cruelty
towards animals rarely stop there.

It’s time we realize this if we at all want a world which is safe for us and our families.

Glories of Thy Wondrous Name

Since time immemorial, in every continent and in every major organized and pagan religion, followers have used a
string of beads to chant repetitive, uplifting sonic phrases to help create a sense of calm and purpose in life. Most
common among these phrases are the ones that refer to names of God and chanting of these names is probably the
single most important religious practice that cuts across all religion, culture and civilization lines.

Names of God, known as Holy Names, is a form of addressing God present in liturgy or prayer of various world
religions. This has been established as most common spiritual practice in Western and Eastern spiritual practices. A
number of traditions have lists of many names of God which enumerate His various qualities. The Qur’an contains the
Ninety-nine Names of Allah. Judaism refers to 72 Divine Names and Mahabharata text contains a thousand names of
Vishnu.

There are scriptural references for that in all religions because every genuine religious tradition in the world teaches
that God’s names are holy and meant to be glorified.

Cow Dung - For Food Security And Survival of Human Race

We have taken our food for granted and most of us have no idea where it comes from. Jennifer Hill from Bristol
recalls, “Several years ago I took my daughter and her friend to our allotments. As we left I dug up a couple of
bunches of my prized organic carrots and offered one of them to my daughter’s friend.With a look of absolute disgust
the young girl said, ‘My mommy doesn’t get food from the dirt! She goes to Tescos!’ Still, at least she knew what a
carrot was.”

Ask any child where their food comes from, and the chances are he or she will say the supermarket.

And most adults don’t know a lot more about how food ends up on their plate either.

Civilization survives on an ample supply of food and all previous civilizations developed near a food source. When
farm productivity declined, usually as a result of soil mismanagement, civilizations also declined - and occasionally
vanished entirely.

Today, all over the world, more than seven and a half million acres of soil has been degraded. That’s larger than the
U.S. and Canada combined. What remains is ailing as a result of compaction, erosion and salination making it near
impossible to plant and adding to greenhouse gases and air pollution. Soil degradation is putting the future of the
global population is at risk according to a National Geographic article by Charles Mann. Civil unrest in Latin America,
Asia and Africa have been attributed to a lack of food and affordable food as a result of poor soil.
Any layman can understand the vital importance of topsoil as a rare and non-renewable resource which sustains all
life on the planet. It is considered non-renewable because it takes centuries, if not millenniums to form one centimeter
of top soil whereas it can be squandered in a matter of few decades.

We are trying to fool nature, forgetting that nature can not be fooled. Willian Lines warns, “For, although people can
be fooled, tricked, and beguiled, nature can not. Material reality resists importuning, finessing, or re-negotiation.
Nature’s machinery is invariant, not subject to legislation or cultural conditioning. It can not be compromised.”

We need to heed the warning and solutions presented in this book if we are at all serious about turning these trends
around and building a safer, sustainable future.

A Heart Beats In Us - The Same As In You

Human society is becoming increasingly heartless. Apathy and desensitization are growing and compassion is
decreasing all over the world. People simply do not care about one another the way they used to. Today, we are
more self-absorbed and self-centered than ever. When people see some one dying or getting killed right in front of
them, they don’t even so much as wink an eye.
In 2011 a security camera video caught a terrible scene in China. A toddler was wandering in a narrow street and
was hit by a van. The van stopped, then moved on while the rear tires slowly rolled over the young girl’s legs. She lay
there screaming, but many people just walked by.
Minutes later, another van ran over the toddler without slowing down. People continued to walk by unfazed, and
motorcyclists rode around her barely moving body.
Finally, some 10 minutes later, a woman came to her aid and got help.
In another case, a school girl was sexually assaulted in a New York alley by a group of young students. The passers
by, instead of helping or calling the police, joined in and the assault went on for hours.
In another instance, a woman who had been raped pleaded for help from a passer-by, only to be told: “I’m going to do
the same thing to you.”
Many accident victims die on the roads as no one helps out or even calls for help.
When human heart can grow so cold to fellow human beings, what concern it could possibly show to other living
creatures. No wonder, the planet has turned into a giant meat grinder and the animals are being treated in the most
horrific ways you can imagine.
Robert Tizon says, “I would rather have eyes that cannot see; ears that cannot hear; lips that cannot speak, than a
heart that cannot love”
The world has lost its heart and it needs to search it out.

Working Moms And The Rise of A Lost Generation

An article in The Economist, Female Power: Women in the Workforce, states, “The economic empowerment of
women across the rich world is one of the most remarkable revolutions of the past 50 years.” Women all over the
world have entered the workforce in record numbers.
Despite women’s greater participation in the workforce, most men have yet to increase their share of domestic duties.
This means that the majority of working mothers are also responsible for housework and looking after their children.
Being a ‘devoted mother’ is not easy. It is more than a full-time job. A full-time job lasts only for 8 or 9 hours whereas
a mother’s job lasts 24 hours, 7 days a week. There are no holidays or leaves. But of late, this most important job is
becoming the least valued job.
In a new book, The Price of Motherhood: Why the Most Important Job in the World is Still the Least Valued, author
Ann Crittenden looks at how a lack of social supports for modern moms forces them to make bitter choices
Crittenden’s research shows that despite the overall advancement of women, mothers’ work remains unappreciated
in an economic sense, even though moms are cultivating “human capital.” Raising productive citizens directly
contributes to the overall health of the economy and wealth of the society.
But in our modern culture, “mothering” is substantially, but not uniquely, a woman’s role.
According to Prof Kerryn Phelps, the traditional notion of the family has been expanded beyond the restricted
definition of a nuclear biological family to include step-families, blended families, single parents, gay parents,
international adoption and surrogacy.
It is not a rocket science. What children need in order to flourish is a safe, loving home environment. And central to
that is the mother of all roles: mothering.
When this role is neglected, even to the slightest degree, you end up with a ‘feral generation’, a generation of violent,
illiterate young men who live outside the boundaries of civilised society and who pose a threat to the established
social order. Even the government has no idea how to deal with them. The world’s cities are overun by this class, jails
are bursting at the seams and nobody has any clue on how to fix this problem.

Animals Have A Soul - Just As Humans Do

Some one asked a question on Catholic.com, “Do animals have souls like human beings?”
Their answer is as follows. “The soul is the principle of life. Since animals and plants are living things, they have
souls, but not in the sense in which human beings have souls. Our souls are rational--theirs aren’t--and ours are
rational because they’re spiritual, not material. Animals and plants also lack a moral sense. Animal and vegetable
souls are dependent entirely on matter for their operation and being. They cease to exist at death. We know human
souls are spiritual since humans can know and love.”
Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement clarifies this flawed contention in the following
discussion with a disciple:
Prabhupada: Animals are also rational. If a dog enters my room, and I say, “Out!” the dog immediately understands
and goes away. How can we say that there is no rationality at work? If I place my finger before an ant, that ant will
turn away immediately. If you give a cow meat, the cow will not touch it. The cow understands that its food consists of
grasses and grains. Animals have rationality, but one aspect of rationality is lacking: an animal cannot think of God.
This is the main difference between animals and men. A man’s rationality is so developed that he can think of God,
whereas an animal cannot. But we should not think that the souls of animals are not immortal. This theory has given
the Christians a basis for killing animals, but they cannot prove that an animal’s soul is irrational or mortal. A man
eats, sleeps, defends, and mates, and an animal does the same. So what is the difference?”
Disciple: Perhaps the difference is one of mental activity. A man has the capacity to think in a more complicated way.
Prabhupada: But mental activity means accepting and rejecting. Animals also accept and reject; therefore they have
mental activity.
It is also the Vedic conclusion [sarva-yonisu] that the living soul, which is part and parcel of God, is present in all
different life species. Those who are foolish think the animal has no soul, but there is no rational basis for this belief.
An animal may be less intelligent than a man, just as a child may be less intelligent than his father, but this does not
mean that no soul is present. This type of mentality is ruining civilization. People have become so degraded that they
even think that an embryo has no soul. (Dialectic Spiritualism)
Thus we see that religion plays an important role in shaping our attitude towards the natural world. In general,
Christianity, and Western civilization as a whole, according to Professor Lynn White, Jr., held a view of nature that
separated humans from the rest of the natural world, and encouraged exploitation of it for our own ends.

Happiness lies first of all in good health. Failing on health front means we fail on every other front.

window. But if we are so smart, why do we find ourselves in such a terrible predicament today? Our species is facing
a barrage of extraordinary and complex problems for which we have no feasible solutions.

of humanity! Irony is, we are only smart enough to create the problems, but we’re not smart enough to fix them.
Some one has rightly said, “In the end, cockroaches would prove to be more intelligent than humans if humans
destroy themselves. Intelligence is really a survival skill for the entire species and that which survives proves
intelligent on a species level.”
Our greatest failings have been in the area of food and health. This is because, out of arrogance, we have chosen to
ignore the collective wisdom of countless generations. Instead, we have chosen to follow the fallible wisdom of
modern doctors and unscrupulous food companies. We have reposed our trust in nutritionists, supplement makers
and celebrities, rather than our moms and grandmoms.
This book discusses the vital role of ghee or clarified butter in maintaining the health and vitality of the human race.
Only recently we have ‘discovered’ that dairy fats are bad for us. But for thousands of years, countless civilizations
have survived on them. Civilizations tends to get rid of foods that are harmful, and that the dairy fats made it through

Farmers Are A Dying Breed

Every 5 years the United States Department of Agriculture sends all the farmers a survey called the Agricultural
Census. And every five years once all the results are tallied and without fail, an alarm bell goes off. The national
average age in farming keeps climbing up and the trend is ever upward. Farmers around the world are getting old.
Where have all the young farmers gone? Why the youngsters are leaving the family farms and showing no interest in
what’s supposed to be the oldest and the ‘noblest’ profession?
This is because small scale agriculture is being deliberately stifled. Pro-corporate policies are making farming non-
viable and farmers are left with no other choice but to quit. Farmers are a dying breed and family farming will become
history soon.
Writing in the Newsweek magazine (April 10, 2014), Max Kutner says:”For decades, farmers across the country have
been dying by suicide at higher rates than the general population. The exact numbers are hard to determine, mainly
because suicide by farmers are under-reported (they may get mislabeled as hunting or tractor accidents, advocates
for prevention say) and because the exact definition of a farmer is elusive.”
A society disconnected from its food source can never know peace, prosperity and good health. Aldo Leopold warns,
“There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the
grocery, and the other that heat comes from the furnace.”

Food Fascism - Corporate Control of Our Food Supply

Henry Kissinger, the former US national security adviser and secretary of state says, “Control oil and you control
nations; control food and you control the people.”
Food fascism is all about controlling the food supply and thereby controlling the people. The vested interests get to
decide who eats and who starves.
US strategy in last few decades has deliberately destroyed family farming in the US and abroad and led to 95% of all
grain reserves in the world coming under the control of six multinational agribusiness corporations.
As the family farms drop off the radar, these agribusiness corporations have come to control our food supply. The
family farms are associated with the values of conservation, independence, self-reliance, family, and community and
these agribusinesses are here to destroy these values. They exist for sheer profiteering and nothing else matters to
them.
Before the first supermarket appeared on the American landscape in 1946, our food was in our homes, gardens, local
fields, and forests. Now this is all a history. Growing your own food or preserving your own seeds is becoming a
criminal offense. Most US cities are making it illegal to hand out food to the homeless. In Florida, a 90 year old
veteran was arrested for feeding the homeless.
This isn’t normal. For a healthier and a better world, we need to get back to the land, back to our freedom. Our
freedom begins with food freedom. As Fukuoka says, “The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but
the cultivation and perfection of human beings.”

You Are What You Grow - Produce Your Own Food

We are Humans. We Grow Food. Growing food is a sign of civilized life. Development of agriculture closely follows
the development of civilization. Agriculture is our first big step toward a civilized life. Therefore Daniel Webster says,
“When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization.”
Eating is an agricultural act. No factory can ever produce a blade of grass. Farming is not just another job, it’s a way
of life. And it’s been that way since the beginning of time. All the previous civilizations were connected to their food
source.
Two centuries ago we took the wrong turn. The onset of industrial revolution fundamentally altered the way we lived,
worked, and related to one another. In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation was unlike anything
humankind had experienced before. Today the world is a big fat stinking mess, ready to go down any time.
All this ‘progress’ of last two centuries has dramatically changed our food choices and eating habits. We graze our
way through the day, that too often on the run. And what we eat is actually killing us. Industrial food is a poison on the
platter. And GMO is the icing on the cake.
It’s time to grow what you can, with what you have, wherever you are.

Just Like Children - Innocent, Helpless And Defenseless

Ancient Indian view on animals is succinctly presented in Srimad Bhagavatam, an ancient Vedic text. It is said
therein:
mrgostra-khara-markakhu-
sarisrp khaga-maksikah
atmanah putravat pasyet
tair esam antaram kiyat
One should treat animals such as deer, camels, asses, monkeys, mice, snakes, birds and flies exactly like one’s own
son. How little difference there actually is between children and these innocent animals. (Srimad Bhagavatam -
7.14.9)
By this statement, one can imagine how broad minded the Vedic civilization was and how much it was concerned
with the well-being of all living entities. This is the Vedic world view, commonly known as the peaceable kingdom. If
we have dominion over animals, surely it is to protect them, not to abuse them for our own ends. Our dominion over
animals is exactly like the loving parents’ dominion over their children.
“The baby is an animal,” wrote one mid-nineteenth-century author, “and the child’s devotion on the whole is to its
body.” It is normal for children to want to run, scream, and pay, and in the words of the parenting manual author
George Ackerly, “every effort to restrain them in their youthful gambols is as unnatural as it would be to confine the
deer in the midst of the forest.”
This association of animals with children (and children with animals) is not new. Throughout the history, children were
regarded as not culpable for crimes, a position later adopted by one and all. Today, in many countries like Canada
and the United States, children below twelve are not held responsible for their actions. Only children twelve and older
may be sent to special correctional institutions, such as juvenile hall. Children enjoy this privilege because they
possess innocence. Animals also possess this very same attribute and it reflects in their eyes.
Today, animals are innocent sufferers in a hell of our making.

Have Mercy - We Have Feelings Too

Lack of empathy, guilt or remorse are the hallmark traits of the common man today. It means that they can do
practically anything, and then act as if nothing as happened. Lack of empathy is the most telling narcissistic trait you
can easily find in the people around you. According to a new research, young people today are significantly more
narcissistic than during the 1980s and 1990s. We are in the middle of a narcissism epidemic.
The narcissist lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others. “Narcissists
do not consider the pain they inflict on others; nor do they give any credence to others’ perceptions,” says Dr. Les
Carter in the book Enough of You, Let’s Talk About Me. “They simply do not care about thoughts and feelings that
conflict with their own.” Do not expect them to listen, validate, understand, or support you.
Professor Twenge and Campbell analysed data from 15,000 American college students who responded to the
Narcissistic Personality survey in 2006. They found that there was a relationship between the birth year of the people
filling out the scale and their narcissism score, and those narcissism scores were significantly higher in the 2000s
than they were in the 1980s and 1990s.
This state of mind gets reflected in our dealings, not only with each other, but with our natural world as well. We are
we living in an increasingly violent society and violence against animals is on the rise. Animal abusers don’t always
stop there — they hurt people too
Horrific examples of cruelty to animals include a rabbit dying in agony after being microwaved and a cat who had
been run over die after being kicked like a football by a passer-by instead of being helped.
Our society is headed for self destruction if we don’t work on preserving its moral and ethical foundation.

Cow Milk - Nature's Most Perfect Food

Milk is one of our most ancient foods. It is also one of the most controversial ones. This controversy is a recent
phenomenon. It stems from our disregard for animal rights and the impact of processed milk on human health.
Opponents of milk are right when they point out the abuse of dairy cows and the extreme processing the milk
undergoes.
At one time, milk was one of the more natural processes in farming. A bull would impregnate a cow — an actual bull,
before the age of artificial insemination . She was pregnant for nine months and then a baby cow was born.
Afterwards, from the calf’s birth, the farmer would milk the excess dairy by hand, for drinking, butter and maybe
cheese. That’s it. But with the rise of factory farming, milk is now a most unnatural operation. Today’s average dairy
cow produces six to seven times as much milk as she did a century ago.
Should we blame the milk or ourselves for this mess?
And our mishandling of food is not confined to milk alone. Most of our food now is industrially farmed and processed.
Industrialization has destroyed our food.
And the result is not very difficult to perceive. According to a study published in The Lancet, we are living in a sick

Peak Soil - Industrial Civilization on The Verge of Eating Itself

The foundation of any civilization is adequate availability of food and water. So anyone with common sense would
think the top priority of nations throughout history would be taking good care of the land.
Apparently not — the decline of most civilizations is due in large part to soil degradation and erosion. Common sense
is very uncommon. In his book, Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations, David R. Montgomery discusses past civilizations
around the globe, which typically last a few centuries before ruining their soil.
Our present-day civilization is following in the footsteps of it’s predecessors. Only difference is here everything is
global. All the previous calamities were local in nature. The world today shares a common fate, thanks to
interdependence and interconnectivity. Earlier we suffered in isolation and now we go down, all together.
Soil is a finite and non-renewable resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human
lifespan. Despite the fact that soil can be formed by weathering it is considered a non-renewable resource because
the process of formation of soil is a very slow process. The estimated global average rate of soil formation is about
400 years for each centimeter of soil. But for us, it takes only a couple of decades to ruin a landscape completely.
UN FAO estimates that ‘today, 33 percent of land is moderately to highly degraded due to the erosion, salinization,
compaction, acidification and chemical pollution of soils.’
Foundation of our civilization is eroding while we are caught-up in the non-essentials. The leaders are also too busy
putting out proverbial fires, to see the point.

than you think, as proven by the catastrophic events all over the world. But it has become a cliche before it has even
been understood.
While we are busy merrymaking, another silent global crisis is creeping up on us. It is called soil degradation. In the
past 40 years alone, 30 percent of the planet’s arable land has become unproductive due to erosion. At current

Soul Killing Jobs of Modern Civilization

Keynes, the father of modern economics predicted in 1930, “In the future, working hours would be short and
vacations long. Our grandchildren would work around three hours a day—and probably only by choice.” Economic
progress and technological advances had already shrunk working hours considerably by his day, and there was no
reason to believe this trend would not continue. Faster cars and planes were taking us places and modern appliances
were reducing drudgery in the home and the office. Concern was being raised in social circles: what are we going to
do with all the free time in the future?
And here we are, in the 21st century, afflicted with a ‘perennial time-scarcity problem’. And the matter is growing
more acute with every passing day. We have never worked so hard, for so long and for so little. Technology hasn’t
made life any easier at all. Workers are finding themselves under more pressure than ever before. People are living
to work and not working to live.
Masanobu Fukuoka has raised this concern in his book ‘The One-Straw Revolution’, “I do not particularly like the
word ‘work.’ Human beings are the only animals who have to work, and I think that is the most ridiculous thing in the
world. Other animals make their livings by living, but people work like crazy, thinking that they have to in order to stay
alive. The bigger the job, the greater the challenge, the more wonderful they think it is. It would be good to give up
that way of thinking and live an easy, comfortable life with plenty of free time. I think that the way animals live in the
tropics, stepping outside in the morning and evening to see if there is something to eat, and taking a long nap in the
afternoon, must be a wonderful life. For human beings, a life of such simplicity would be possible if one worked to
produce directly his daily necessities. In such a life, work is not work as people generally think of it, but simply doing
what needs to be done.”

True Equality, Fraternity And Universal Love

M

odern nations are founded on the principles of justice, fairness, equality, and individual freedom of religion and
speech, among others. According to the founding fathers of America, unalienable rights are those which God gave to
man at the Creation, once and for all. By definition, since God granted such rights, governments could not take them
away. In America, this fundamental truth is recognized and enshrined in the nation’s birth certificate, the Declaration
of Independence:
“All men are created equal...[and] are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are
Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
According to the Founders, unalienable rights belong to each person by virtue of the fact that man is made in God’s
image, and is therefore endowed with certain attributes, powers, freedoms, and legal protections as part of his
essence. These rights are thus inseparable -- or unalienable -- from each person individually and from the human
race in general. They are a gift from the Creator and it is impossible for government to alter or nullify mankind’s divine
inheritance.
The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, a slaveholder, and what he really meant was that
all rich, white, land owning males are created equal, and guaranteed to the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness.
To the slave, in America, the celebration of freedom was absent. There was no liberation. There was no release from
the oppression that they were dealt with. There was no reason to celebrate the Fourth of July like any other white
American would, because it meant nothing to them. Frederick Douglass wrote about this in his What to the Slave Is
the Fourth of July?
Of all the contradictions in America’s history, none surpasses its toleration first of slavery and then of segregation.
Meting out of this injustice came to be known as racism which is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior
to another. Speciesism, an offshoot of racism, is a prejudice or bias in favour of the interests of members of one’s
own species and against those of members of other species. Speciesism is the idea that being human is a good
enough reason for human animals to have greater moral rights than non-human animals.
According to Peter Singer, If we were to compare attitudes about speciesism today with past racist attitudes, we
would have to say that we are back in the days in which the slave trade was still legal.
Our struggle for freedom is not complete until we recognize the unalienable rights of non-human animals in our
constitution. Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement says:
A cow is born in America, and a gentleman is born in America, but the state takes care of the gentleman, not of the
cows. They say “national,” “nationality.” Why nationality is refused to the animals? Just like few days or few years ago
the nationality was also awarded to the black man. This is nice. Why one section of humanity should be denied
nationality? That was very nice. National means the living entity born in that land... That is natural. If a child, even of
an Indian, is born in your country he immediately gets the citizenship. That is the law. So the conclusion is that
anyone who is born in this land, he gets nationality. But why we should refuse nationality to the poor
